How to Install a Garbage Disposal
Richard installed a Badger 100 ⅓ Continuous Feed Garbage Disposal [amzn.to/3py4QnY], which is manufactured by InSinkErator [insinkerator.emerson.com/en-us].
The other tools and materials he used to install the disposal, including the plumber’s putty, array of PVC piping, fittings, cleaner, and glue, and wrenches can all be found at home centers and plumbing supply houses.
How to Reface a Concrete Wall
Mark and Jenn refaced the concrete using a thin stone veneer. The material is Connecticut Fieldstone and was cut in a mosaic pattern for installation. The stone cap was made of 2” thick bluestone treads. Both were sourced by Plymouth Quarries [www.plymouthquarries.com/inde...].
To secure the thin stone to the wall and the bluestone to the top, Mark used a modified mortar [amzn.to/3k3P96E]. The mortar has an adhesive in it that helps the stone to stick to the wall.
The other tools Mark and Jenn used to reface the wall, including trowels, mallets, and the level, can all be found at home centers.

Richard is a certified expert in garbage disposal installations.
I spent 9 minutes and 25 seconds watching a door get cut in half so she could “hear her kids”…only to realize that there was a window 3 feet from the door.
The dutch door conversion was all well and good, but she could have just invested in a screen door, and leave the inside door completely open, and also keep out the bugs and such as a bonus 🤔
She's needs a screen door & a better lock. I've personally never witnessed how to make a Dutch door, made me think different about going about doing so. Thanks for teaching me something new! Tom is the man!
"How do you know how deep to chisel?"
Lady I've been doing this a long time, this number of taps with this hammer and chisel equals perfect depth.
Instead of cutting the door in half, why not just open the window right next to it to watch your kids? Lol
I really do not get it, she did not like the door swinging that way, but the window still swings that way, and is there going to be a place for wind to get through now? or is this a lesson in contracting, do what they asked even if you know its f'd up because they will call you to change it
It is their house so do whatever makes them happy but either what you said or my thought was to upgrade the window with one with a screen. You're going to let bugs in with that door open but we have a habit of creating first world problems in this country.
@@BobbyLips Trying to make us feel guilty about "first world problems"? Cause I don't.
@@herculesrockefeller8969 Most selfish people don't.
My takeaway is that Dutch doors are virtually pointless given all the downsides and barely any upside. A screen door makes way more sense. Keeps out bugs, too.
I am surprised that code does not require a hand rail above that concrete wall to prevent tripping into that door recess.
I would have rocked or at least eased and thermaled those bluestone caps. Saw cut edges stick out like a sore thumb on top of a fieldstone veneer wall.
Would be nice to learn about chrome fittings for people wanting to keep period correct plumbing
I hope the glass on the now dutch door is tempered. With two young children running and playing, especially with friends, when the upper dutch door is ajar, it is likely for someone to put their hand or head through the glass.
That wall repair was sweet,thanksTOH🤗😎🤗😎
Speaking of garbage disposals.......................several years ago I got rid of mine because the only time I really turned it on was to see if it was still working. Each of my double sinks have dual strainers so they catch about 99% of all food waste.
My GF used to have a problem with clogged drains in the kitchen sink run which also included the laundry room drain. Since stopping the use of her garbage disposal, she hasn't had a problem with clogged drains anymore. I've also heard others having the same results.
Garbage disposals not only contribute to grease clogging up sewer pipes, but also increase the demands on municipal water treatment facilities.
We don't often see Tommy use polyurethane glue. I guess it's because the plug wasn't a super tight fit. Whatever the case, I'm a fan of polyurethane glue.
A drip edge underneath the bluestone cap will prevent water (through capillary action) from reaching the stone veneer.
Good going Old house
With that flimsy latch holding the top on there's no point to having a deadbolt in that door now. Also with a wood friction fit, it won't fit once painted. Should have gone for a gasket seal.
Too bad they don't cut corner pieces of that thin-cut field stone.
Richard, street 22’s are available!
20:12 looks like a lot of algae left on the surface that they are covering…. I would have never guessed that was best practices
Those p traps with that little c\o plug are worthless. I remove them and install a wye with a c\o plug for maintenance of the line.
A Dutch door, only in America!
15:29 your connection is a bit short..
No weather stripping on the door?
It is “…this OLD house…” after all
you can see it hanging in the video , they prob re attached it later on.
The dutch door is junk - probably the worst Tomy's job... The part about a garbage disposal - no idea why americans are so obsessed by it, is it not easier just to throw rests to a garbage bin or to a composter? Only part which I like a loot is the last part - good job!
Although many people in newer houses have them, we've never used a garbage disposal in our house here in Texas.
Next to the sink I just keep two small airtight canisters. Use a rubber spatula to scrape food waste into them; one for meat and grease lined with used grocery bags and one for veggies and other compostables lined with paper lunch bags. On trash day the meat waste goes out with the garbage and the paper bag with compostables goes in the compost bin outside. As long as the canisters have a tight fitting lid and are emptied regularly there's no problem with smell and the liners keep them low maintenance.
Garbage disposals not only contribute to grease clogging up sewer pipes, but also increase the demands on municipal water treatment facilities.
I'm still really upset about ask this old house & this old house being cancelled
They were cancelled? From TV?
When was it cancelled?
What?!!! No!!!
Wow. Way to ruin Christmas for me you sonofabi**h 😞
Joe biden probably gave their funding to Ukraine.
That garbage disposal was definitely installed by someone that's been charging clients for time and parts all his life.
I'm still really upset about ask this old house & this old house being cancelled
