Don took Sid Gillman's passing offense he learned while he was in San Diego to another level. Many of the top offenses of all time ran the Air Coryell offense. Top scoring offenses like the '81 Chargers, '83 Redskins, '99 Rams, and the '03 Chiefs all ran the Don Coryell offense.
I actually saw a comment online years back from Jim Trotter of ESPN (when he was with SI at the time I believe) he had mentioned that in his comment that he did not get in due to his playoff record (3-6), and there were a backlog of deserving players as he was a voter for the HOF (not sure if he still is)
Had that famous AFC Championship game in the bitter cold been played in San Diego and not Cincy......his Chargers would have been playing in the Superbowl.
Damn, I got tears in my eyes watching Madden talk about Don. Great video.
Man smh hw culd u not, right?
A lot of people are unaware of his success as a head coach in college at San Diego St.
Chargers need to get another coach like Don Coryell. He was the best. When everyone was wearing Charger jerseys. I was wearing the coaches golf shirt.
Don finally made it to the hof ..😊 🏉👏
When Coryell arrived in St. Louis Hart was just another quarterback . Then he evolved into an all-pro QB. Then there was that guy named Fouts.
Who also evolved into an All-Pro QB.

FootballJunkie Also the '84-'86 Dolphins, '84 Cardinals, '89 Rams, '91 Redskins, '92-'95 Cowboys, '95 Lions, '97 Raiders, '04 Colts, '05 Bengals, '06 Chargers, & '15 Cardinals ran a derivative of the Gillman/Coryell offense too.
@nikosuavesworldofsportsmusic
The 90s Cowboys under Ernie Zampses and Norv Turner.
A disgrace Coryell is not in the H.O.F.
He is now!!!!⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️
One of my all-time favorite NFL coachs.
He was the coach when I was old enough to fall in love with the Chargers.
God bless #AirCoryell #SanDiegoSuperChargers
John was a great coach
only coach to have 100 wins in both the pros and college..also father of the I formation as well as air coryell..
He also introduced the H-back into the passing game.
Really cool history
Don was a innovative football coach and unique individual. He cared and was intensively competitive.
Holy crap… my grandpa was at his celebration of life and told stories of it, but now I actually get to see it, amazing
good stuff,,, Coryell doesn't get enough credit in my eyes,,, can you imagine if he ever had a decent defensive coordinator lol
@shane h Very well stated sir. John (JJ) Jefferson & Fred Dean 100% agree. #SALUTE

Just found out he is my 3rd cousin.
I also found out that Don Coryell is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Class of 2023.
Had that famous AFC Championship game in the bitter cold been played in San Diego and not Cincy......his Chargers would have been playing in the Superbowl.
They crushed us in SD earlier.
