The story of the beginning of Air Coryell actually predates Don Coryell's coming to the NFL.
As a young assistant college coach, Coryell was there at the creation of the I Formation.
On going to San Diego State, Coryell found his team lacked the talent for the running game the I Formation was based on. His creation of the Air Coryell offense was a case of necessity being the mother of invention; since his team couldn't run the ball consistently, the passing game had to be changed to cover the deficiency. Coryell's college record shows the success of this.
The early Air Coryell offense came with him to the Cardinals, and he had the trio of quarterback Jim Heart, running back Terry Metcalf and wide receiver Mel Grey to implement the offense. The Cardinals went from last in the division in his first year to first in his second.
The team went from a playoff team in 1976 to 7-7 in 1977, and personnel decisions within the organization resulted in Coryell stepping down following the season.
Coryell's quick rise to prominence with the Chargers in 1978 was set up by the talent acquisitions by previous coach Tommy Prothro; all Coryell had to do was to take the tools already in place and run with them.

Gibbs also started 3 different running backs John Riggins, Timmy Smith, and Earnest Byner, in those 3 SB wins. Most of the offensive line started all 3 SB wins . So I agree that the O-line will have a lot to do with the overall success of this offensive scheme. If the O-line can keep Haskins upright this yr good things will happen. Another good video bro

Our most recent foray into the Air Coryell offense was when Al Saunders came to us as the Associate head coach to help Coach Gibbs. 2006-2007. Alex Smith has experience with the Air Coryell. Norv Turner was his second offensive Coordinator. Then with Jim Hostler and Mike Martz too in 2006-2008.

He also invited the I formation, if you go to his memorial John Madden will tell you that story. While you're there check out the Freddy Dryer speech your a fan of football you'll love this it's hilarious. His staff was talented , including Joe Gibbs , Madden, and a couple of other guys you will recognize,. Coryell was a Genius. So deserving of being in the HOF.

First off, excellent analysis as always, and amazing work ethic. Until you have done something like this..people just don't realize how much work is put in to videos like this so my hat is off to you
    Thoughts so far:
#1 This offense seems HEAVILY reliant on an above-average to elite o-line as the lynch pin to success even more so than the West Coast offense because there are way more 5 and 7 step drop plays the QB is running. Unfortunately we do not have that right now. However, John Matsko has a track record of success, and I think he will get the most out of the guys we have.
#2, even without an elite o-line, our running back corps is MORE than capable of exploiting the gaps and mismatches this offense is going to create due to A their versatility, and B the defense not being able to stack the box
And #3, Terry McLaurin is going to straight up EAT in this offense!!! From his high football IQ..to his crisp route running..to his above-average speed, it is Taylor made for an X like him to maximize space.

Not entirely correct, the emphasis on passing the ball as the primary means of moving the ball began with Sid Gillman, Coryell was an assistant under Gillman, Coryell took the offense to San Diego . From there it developed further, going to Cincinnati with Paul Brown, who's protege Bill Walsh then addressed issues, with the run game by passing short, which later became known as the "west coast offense". John Madden took the offense to Oakland, and Joe Gibbs took the offense to Washington. But it all started with Gillman who was way ahead of his time .
