As a Redskins fan of 60 years or so, I will miss Sonny Jurgensen's breakdowns of the Washington passing game more than words can say. Thanks for all the great years, Sonny. And Sam.
The story of the beginning of Air Coryell actually predates Don Coryell's coming to the NFL.
As a young assistant college coach, Coryell was there at the creation of the I Formation.
On going to San Diego State, Coryell found his team lacked the talent for the running game the I Formation was based on. His creation of the Air Coryell offense was a case of necessity being the mother of invention; since his team couldn't run the ball consistently, the passing game had to be changed to cover the deficiency. Coryell's college record shows the success of this.
The early Air Coryell offense came with him to the Cardinals, and he had the trio of quarterback Jim Heart, running back Terry Metcalf and wide receiver Mel Grey to implement the offense. The Cardinals went from last in the division in his first year to first in his second.
The team went from a playoff team in 1976 to 7-7 in 1977, and personnel decisions within the organization resulted in Coryell stepping down following the season.
Coryell's quick rise to prominence with the Chargers in 1978 was set up by the talent acquisitions by previous coach Tommy Prothro; all Coryell had to do was to take the tools already in place and run with them.
I had to stop @7:15 because you are right. 3 different QB's, 3 superbowl wins in 9 years. Joe Gibbs is the man!
A lot of information but this was a great breakdown. Extremely detailed
Great great video. I am a HUGE follower of the Air Coryell teams. They were the best offense no question. Don Coryell was decades ahead of his time. You nailed the details 100%
Gibbs also started 3 different running backs John Riggins, Timmy Smith, and Earnest Byner, in those 3 SB wins. Most of the offensive line started all 3 SB wins . So I agree that the O-line will have a lot to do with the overall success of this offensive scheme. If the O-line can keep Haskins upright this yr good things will happen. Another good video bro
Not to mention Gibbs won Super Bowls with 3 different QB’s. Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien.
@@footballscoutingreport thank you I've been waiting for someone to say that
Our most recent foray into the Air Coryell offense was when Al Saunders came to us as the Associate head coach to help Coach Gibbs. 2006-2007. Alex Smith has experience with the Air Coryell. Norv Turner was his second offensive Coordinator. Then with Jim Hostler and Mike Martz too in 2006-2008.
Norv turners and zampese as well
Great video an breakdown of our Air Coryell scheme Rico......keep grinding, Peace and stay safe. #HTTR4LIFE.
Another quality video. Well done good Sir
Great breakdown Rico. HTTR!
Rico - so glad I found your breakdowns! Fantastic job!
Yes!
This is a fantastic video!
Great Job! I really enjoyed this
Rico is brilliant.
Preciate that 🔥!
Great vid Rico, keep it up!
Joe Gibbs ran a more run oriented version which emphasized shifting and mo2tion which meshed playaction ..their downfield passing had the same concepts as Coryells version...
Hi rico, well worth the wait, keep it up👍
Excellent breakdown Rico!
Wow, I learned so much! Thanks, great video, and very well laid out and explained.
let’s go!!!! i couldn’t wait for this keep it up bro you doing big things for us fans and i truly appreciate it! 💪🏽💪🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
He also invited the I formation, if you go to his memorial John Madden will tell you that story. While you're there check out the Freddy Dryer speech your a fan of football you'll love this it's hilarious. His staff was talented , including Joe Gibbs , Madden, and a couple of other guys you will recognize,. Coryell was a Genius. So deserving of being in the HOF.
CONGRATULATIONS RIP
Been waiting for this. 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
Great job Rico HTTR Can't wait to see this offense
Nice !
Nice Video... Good stuff I enjoyed it, but I believe the Turner’s use F-back but the more popular term is H-back made famous by our very own Joe Jackson Gibbs!!!
#HTTR
yeah football IQ.. more of it..keep em coming. thx
I'm gonna watch this entire video when I have the time. I'm going to share this on Hogs Haven.com for you too. Great stuff, thanks!
Hogshaven isna great site
Very informative do the defensive scheme also
He already did. A few months ago
I like the RedWolves more in more. Great video Fam
OH SHIT ITS HERE EVERYONE REMAIN CALM REMAIN CAAAAALLLLLLMMMMMMM
You have a lot more faith In the defense than I have. But we shall see if they can turn it around. :)
First off, excellent analysis as always, and amazing work ethic. Until you have done something like this..people just don't realize how much work is put in to videos like this so my hat is off to you
Thoughts so far:
#1 This offense seems HEAVILY reliant on an above-average to elite o-line as the lynch pin to success even more so than the West Coast offense because there are way more 5 and 7 step drop plays the QB is running. Unfortunately we do not have that right now. However, John Matsko has a track record of success, and I think he will get the most out of the guys we have.
#2, even without an elite o-line, our running back corps is MORE than capable of exploiting the gaps and mismatches this offense is going to create due to A their versatility, and B the defense not being able to stack the box
And #3, Terry McLaurin is going to straight up EAT in this offense!!! From his high football IQ..to his crisp route running..to his above-average speed, it is Taylor made for an X like him to maximize space.
Watching those old school games with Dan Fouts and Kellen Winslow is a joy. And looking at the Hogs was pretty nice
as well!!
Dope 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Not entirely correct, the emphasis on passing the ball as the primary means of moving the ball began with Sid Gillman, Coryell was an assistant under Gillman, Coryell took the offense to San Diego . From there it developed further, going to Cincinnati with Paul Brown, who's protege Bill Walsh then addressed issues, with the run game by passing short, which later became known as the "west coast offense". John Madden took the offense to Oakland, and Joe Gibbs took the offense to Washington. But it all started with Gillman who was way ahead of his time .
Hey Rico You Said The Rams Won 2 Superbowl. The Rams Been In 3 Superbowl BUT Only Won 1. Unfortunately Don Never Won A Superbowl.
Bruh we're still waiting on part 2 of this video bro, we've been waiting for far too long make it happen!!
I want them 3 hour film sessions
I would rather have that live
Even HS football can be "complicated" -- "Over Dallas Right Plus, Wip Jet, 328 Sweep G"
St. Louis went to two Superbowls, not won two Superbowls.
Air Coryell really started with Don Coryell's St. Louis Carninals teams, with Jim Hart throwing to the likes of Mel Gray and TE Jackie Smith....
Really started with Sid Gillman.
@@BennyNegroFromQueens Started at San Diego State when Sid Gillman was coach of the Chargers. They talked to each other.
"Top 7 strongest arm in the NFL" I believe you Rico, but did you get that from a source or just estimated it. He has a canon and I was curious where he ranks in the NFL, but cannot find a ranking online from the last 2 years.
Lets go

Why Don Coryell isn't enshrined in Canton remains a mystery...they had the nerve to put a bum like Jerry Jones in. Smh...!
#HTTR
#AIRCORYELL
What!? Coryell isn’t in the HOF? That’s ridiculous! I just assumed he was because he had contributed so much.
@@manuelsoto9134 yeah. Its fucked up. Its like popularity contest to get enshrined into Canton!!!
Dont spill all the beans
Ken zampese is a clown, he was the bengals OC for half a season, set a record for least amount of points scored in 4 games
The Air Coryell is a difficult offense to install and execute...but when you get it right...
