    Loved the Don Coryell stuff. This wizard of the passing game should be in the Hall of Fame. His rivalry with the Landry Cowboys was intense and always entertaining. Coryell's weakness, and you touched on it, was that he many times did not balance the fourth quarter leads with a grind it out, run out the clock offense. The Cowboys often won high scoring games because Landry was a defensive coach as well as offensive coach and he did know when to control the ball and keep it away from the high powered Cardinals/Chargers offenses. Nothing but admiration and respect for Coach Don Coryell.

      This is a dumb comment. You should know better than to say this especially knowing how Dak is known for not throwing interceptions. Last year was one bad year where Dak had the interception bug... Plus here's what you failed to understand or just choose to ignore, outside of Ceedee Lamb Dak was devoid of weapons. They not only lacked the ability to separate which ranked 26th in the league but they also lacked explosiveness and couldn't threaten defenses down the field which is why we traded for Brandin Cooks. It's not just Dak throwing interceptions because he wasn't playing well like a lot of you simple minded fans like to claim

    "Be aggressively unpredictable" In Juco, many decades ago i had a coach who lived by that mantra.
    Kellen Moore towards the end of his run, like the great Don Coryell became predictable and stagnant. I hope coach Schottenheimer pushes (refresh) on his schemes so he doesn't repeat the same error. LC, that was the best breakdown on this three coaching philosophies i've seen. 👍

      Thanks!! Yeah his stop routes was becoming too predictable! Lol. I like Kellen Moore! I just think his system along with his inexperience wasn't a good fit for Dak. Dak has to take some ( or a lot) of the blaim as well. Kellen Moore's system needs a accurate quaterback and accuracy is something dak struggles with. Hopefully Schottenheimer's on the move concept ( instead of trying to throw receivers open) can put Dak in better positions to be successful. Thanks Aaron!

Glad Don Coryell got into the Hall of Fame but wish Marty was in too. Loved Terry Metcalf’s son Eric on the Browns & Cards too. The Father of modern passing is Sid Gillman who was at San Diego Chargers, Coryell learned from him. Gillman was coaching at San Diego and Don Coryell at San Diego State, Coryell would sometimes take his team to Chargers practices so they could watch how Gillman incorporated his passing game theories into his offense.
    Edit- great video though, as always. Looking forward to what Schottenheimer can do.

    Great, great video breakdo
    One of my "MAIN PROBLEMS" with the Cowboys' offense - going back to Garrett - is the Cowboys play too much of their "GAME" in the "BOX."
    That 10 to 20 yard area behind the line of scrimmage.
    They don't "HIT 'EM DEEP" nearly enough - and EVERY DEFENSE KNEW IT!!!
    You can't wait 'til it's 2nd. or 3rd. & 10 or 15, etc, then throw a 20 yard pass!
    Go back and watch the 49ers playoff game last year.
    The last INT Dak threw.
    You can count ALL 11 OF THE 49ers DEFENSIVE PLAYERS SITTING IN "THE BOX" just past the first down marker.
    ALL 11.
    THEY KNEW Dak / Dallas was going to throw the ball BY THE MARKER, so WHY "DEFEND" anything beyond that?
    Dallas - since the '90s - have been WAY, WAY TOO PREDICTABLE!!

    The problem with Air Coryell is that he lacked a running game, put too much stress on the defense, and was vulnerable to playing against teams that were good in defending the pass and could run on them, keeping that offense off the field, which led Fouts to not being able to get into a rhythm. Joe Gibbs took this offense and he added a running game with terrific run blockers on the OL. He still came across the greatest cornerback tandem when got pummeled in the Super Bowl against the Raiders, but was still able to win 3 times. The running game has to be respected by opposing teams to allow for the passing game to open up. If not, then the linebackers will drop into the flats, two deep zones allow cornerbacks to go underneath receivers, increasing their chances of picking off passes.

      That's not really true. Look at the yearly leaders in rushing TDs over the last four decades. At least half of them played in a variant of Coryell's offense:
      Chuck Muncie, John Riggins, George Rogers, Greg Bell, Cleveland Gary, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Terry Allen, Stephen Davis, Marshall Faulk, Priest Holmes, LaDainian Tomlinson, DeMarco Murray, Adrian Peterson just to name a few.

    • @michaell874
      @michaell874 Před 5 měsíci

      @@Jelperman My argument about Air Coryell’s teams is that such a heavy emphasis was placed on the passing game that it left his teams vulnerable against good defensive teams or teams that can use the run to control the football and keep his quarterback out of his rhythm. When he coached the Chargers, that offense was filled with legends; Dan Fouts, John Jefferson, Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler and Kellen Winslow. Yet, the closest San Diego ever got to a Super Bowl is when they got blown out in Cincinnati. Likewise, Dan Marino was the greatest quarterback we had ever seen when he joined the Miami Dolphins, but once again, he never won. He reached one Super Bowl where he looked very ordinary in getting blown out by the 49ers. Joe Gibbs, an assistant of Air Coryell, did something different. When he coached on Washington, he built a huge OL of dominant run blockers with a power back John Riggins in the backfield. His team always came out throwing in the first half to try to establish a lead, and then hand the ball off to Riggins running behind Bostic, Grimm and Jacoby in the second half, wearing down the opposing defense and keeping the opposing offense off the field. The following year the Redskins had one of the greatest teams of all time, but got blown out by the Raiders because the two shut down cornerbacks Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes shut down Washington’s passing attack in the first half. But Gibbs won twice more with very average quarterbacks and teams thst ran behind a dominant run blocking OL. Jimmy Johnson created a dynasty largely because he put together an even more dominant OL and had Emmitt Smith in the backfield. Once this team gained a lead, they just handed the ball off to Emmitt. Just look at how much he dominated the Giants on the road while playing with a separated shoulder. A good power running game allows the team to control the ball, control the clock, wear down the opposing defense and limits the opposing team’s chances on the field. Sadly most NFL coaches have gone away from that, but the teams that win in the playoffs will mostly win because they can run the football. Also, when a team can run the football, it then opens up the play action pass, which is devastating to a defense, especially when they are covering an elite wide receiver.

    • @Jelperman
      @Jelperman Před 5 měsíci

      @@michaell874 Coryell had a huge offensive line in San Diego and a power back in Chuck Muncie (his stats are almost identical to Riggins' from 1980-84 -except for fumbles). What Gibbs had in Washington (and Johnson had in Dalles) that Coryell didn't have in San Diego was a top defense, and DEFENSE is what wins champioships. If your defense is giving up a lot of points, you don't have the luxury of grinding it out when you have the lead -because no lead is safe (if you even have a lead). You're confusing cause (lack of defense) with effect (throwing way more than passing).
      The lack of defense in San Diego had more to do with ownership/management trading away the Chargers' best defensive players to the 49ers and hiring/firing defensive coaches on a regular basis. This was often done over the objection of the head coach and in some cases, without even telling him until after it was done.
      Another Achilles Heel of the Chargers was that the two main running backs suffered from chronic fumbleitis. James Brooks fumbled FIVE kickoffs in three playoff games, and Chuck Muncie was leaving the ball on the ground all the time.

    Logical Cowboy,
    From one ball coach to another, I can sit back and drink a brewskis all day listening to you break down football philosophy. That said, from what you wrote here it's very similar to what Norv Turner ran when he was at Dallas as the OC. Alvin Harper was the high jump vertical threat, very similar to Michael Gallup. For over the middle was definitely Michael Irvin but he could go deep as well. Then the slot receiver was Kelvin Martin who was a Punt Return Specialist as well. Everything keyed on the inside run that Emmitt Smith called the "Lead Draw". Which I'm still trying to understand the complexity of the play. And if you really look at Tony Pollard and Vince Vaughan, they're not really any bigger than Emmitt's playing wait. Now honestly, if Zeke is willing to block and be the Daryl Johnston of this running back group, we might have something special. Cause I've seen Zeke block. He's put several big defensive Tackles on there backs known as a pancake block. Hey that's actually one of the most fun positions to play. Because you really get to knock the snot out of someone, even in today's NFL. But it looks like Coach McCarthy is trying to put back in the 1990s Dallas Cowboys Offense.

    • @thelogicalcowboy
      @thelogicalcowboy  Před rokem

      Great post! Keep in mind McCarthy is a 90s coach so I wouldn't put it past him that somewhere along the road he took some ideas from Turner to modernize his West Coast offense. Everyone was stealing something from dallas in those days. Also keep in mind Turner received his concept from Ernie Zampese who received his concept from Don Coryell. Coryell received his concept from Gillman, the originator of both the West Coast offense and the Coryell offense. So it's no surprise that some West Coast proponents created concepts that resembled the Air Coryell and vice versa.

I know that is a subjective stat with a lot of variables, my point is I still have doubts about Dak's accuracy on the really deep throws. I remember watching the chargers and now it makes me wonder if they really had five weapons that were amazing including the quarterback or were they all products of that system. What I do know is I got their ass kicked in the playoffs every year by a team that wasn't afraid to jam it down your throat. The subtle differences between Air Coryell and the West Coast offense in most people's mind are small because they were both passing offenses. But not really West Coast was all about timing and crossing routes and running the ball and throwing it to your running back. Whereas I believe you explain the air coryell offense brilliantly. The fact that McCarthy came from that San Francisco Walsh offense doesn't mean that he's going to run a West Coast offense I believe he has learned a lot over the years without a Hall of Fame quarterback now and that changing your offense every few years even if you keep the same coordinator is a must. Unless you have Joe Montana and Jerry Rice and then you just do exactly what you do every f****** game. Thanks a ton maybe you could talk about McCarthy and his West Coast roots.

    And why is that so important? Well, it's obviously easier to win at home than on the road, and Dallas has *never* been to a SB in any season where they've lost that final reg season game. 8 trips to the SB, and eight final seasonal game wins. 8-0.
    So history says winning that final game is pretty important, so having it at home is kind of a big deal, IMO.

    Only criticism is that you left out Coryell's debt to Sid Gillman. Imo, no way Coryell happens w/o Gillman!!

    With the great draft & Free agent signings the Boys could play that Jimmy Johnson 36 Defense, it confuses the QB's ability to read where pressure is going to come from ...!

      Yep. Kellen Moore runs the ball just to run the ball lol. Schottenheimer runs the ball with a lot more purpose and detail which will make our offense a lot better.

    Kellen moore and Brain Schottenheimer come from the Coryell tree but Kellen is a better play designer it was dak not kellen moore it’s a passing NFL and to help dak kellen still ran 47.3 % of the time how much more can you run in todays passing NFL
