  • Slough, located in the county of Berkshire in southeast England, is approximately 20 miles west of central London.
The town boasts a unique and diverse history, offering a blend of both urban and suburban lifestyles.
Like many urban regions, Slough has encountered its share of crime-related challenges.
Over the years, it has witnessed fluctuations in crime rates, from violent crime and theft to drug-related offenses.
However, local authorities and the police are continuously working on initiatives aimed at improving safety and reducing crime.
A standout characteristic of Slough is its rich ethnic diversity.
Often cited as one of the most ethnically varied towns in the UK, Slough's demographic includes a significant population of South Asian origins, including Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi communities.
The town is also home to considerable Eastern European, African, and Caribbean populations.
This vast array of cultures lends Slough a vibrant social and cultural atmosphere, peppered with diverse festivals, events, and eateries that celebrate its multicultural heritage.
Economically, Slough has faced challenges akin to many post-industrial towns.
Historically, the town was a significant industrial center, mainly due to the Slough Trading Estate, one of Europe's largest and oldest.
As the economic landscape shifted over the decades, the town has had to navigate issues such as unemployment, underemployment, and the pressures of a high cost of living, especially in housing.
Despite these challenges, Slough's strategic location near London and Heathrow Airport makes it an attractive business hub, housing the headquarters of numerous multinational companies.
Additionally, Slough has garnered attention in literature and pop culture.
The town was notably mentioned in Sir John Betjeman's poem "Slough," which painted a rather grim picture during the industrial age.
More recently, Slough found worldwide fame as the backdrop for the UK version of the hit TV series "The Office," starring Ricky Gervais.
Though the show humorously poked fun at the town, it brought Slough to an international audience.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I simply cannot believe how much the UK has changed since I lived there 35 years ago. I lived in Bury St. Edmunds, Ipswich, Woodbridge and London. I have traveled the World and currently live in Germany. I always thought I'd return to the UK and retire in the Greater London area, Surrey, Sussex, Norfolk or Suffolk. After watching many of your clips, I'm not so sure that I'd feel safe. I am aware that with time, all places change but to such measures - wow! I have a cousin who lives in Thetford Norfolk and he told me, to remain in Germany as the economy and infrastructure is much better. Although I agree about the economy/infrastructure, the Germans are a cold lot - they all seem to suffer from "grumpy face" syndrome, and the language is so aggressive - it takes getting used to.
Well, I wish the best for the UK - hope things get better.

I'm glad you agree. I lived in the greater Frankfurt Area as well and in Stuttgart, now Nurermberg. I can honestly say that out of these 3 big cities, Nuremberg is the most friendly, followed by Frankfurt and then Stuttgart. I don't get it here. The Germans facial expression is one of a cross between a sourpuss and someone who just smelled some bad cheese. Not one smile or a cheery disposition. I miss popping in the pub after work and holding a simple conversation with a stranger on such friendly levels. Here, all you get is a stare, a grunt maybe and a cold "hallo" if you're lucky or shall we say unlucky😂😂🤣🤣😁😁@@AnthonyMcRedmond-Vg2ry

Stay in Germany! I lived in bombed out West Berlin in the '80's and it was better than England is NOW! As for the people, they are reserved, (a reputation WE have ironically!) I was stationed in Berlin in 1990-1993 and it was an interesting assignment. I was pondering today about returning to England (East Anglia /Suffolk) simply due to the people. Funny, as we are known to be "reserved" in the UK, but the Germans place it on a whole other level. I went to a party last week, where there was no music, no conversation outside of the subject of economics, the Euro position, how to better bank your monies and no one here is a banker or economics major. This would have never happend to my old crew in the UK. We would have been better off going to some Gasthaus, drink some beers and watch something on the tele - but no.The highlight of the party was watching a heavy seat comedian (Cindi von Marzan) which wasn't all that funny as her Berlin humor is eccentric on her environment in Berlin. Regardless, I managed and enjoyed the food. I simply miss the friendliness of our peoples.@@sebastiennesp1978

    The problems with Slough:
    1) High crime.
    2) The people with problematic behaviour aren't a tiny minority like in other towns and they aren't just working class people. The behaviour is part of their culture.
    3) Very overcrowded. Any vacant office or spare land is converted to flats.
    4) Incredibly bad drivers. Because a lot of the people are alphas. Also I've always suspected that you can get a licence without taking a test.
    5) Lots of very anti-social people and unusually a lot of middle-class people. It's not just "chavs" that are the problem. For example, If you live in a flat then you'll frequently have problems with anti-social neighbours who are middle-class. Letting agents have told me that this is common.
    6) People have very low standards. For example, Town has LOTS of fast food & butchers shops regularly with open rubbish bags out the back and rats running about during the day time.
    7) Labour council is repeatedly re-elected no matter how incompetent and wasteful of money that they are.

Theoretically they may make improvements (Waste less money so that they provide better public services / Reduce the number of new properties built). But the Labour council was even re-elected shortly after it became public that they were £800m+ in debt. And I don't see what can be done about the standard of people in the town who are IMO a big part of the problem. The people who move to the town bring the same problematic attitudes because they come here to be with people like them.

I lived in Britwell and Chalvey. Chalvey is definitely the worst part of Slough - same as High Street. Completely awful and deprived place. On the other hand I found Britwell kinda good for Slough - it's very green, still not so much of green areas taken by new developments. Some people living there are indeed unemployed, neglecting local area but compared to the rest of Slough it's actually a good place. The funny thing is that complete shithole like Chalvey is located twenty minutes walk or five minutes drive from one of the poshest areas in UK - Eton. The local council is also bankrupt within last couple of years, despite high council tax due to extreme financial mismanagement such as knocking down a perfectly good library and bus station and rebuilding with modern architecture monstrosity, the’renovation’ of the high street (yes what you can see on the vid is renovated) and the council building a thunderbird themed hotel. They are causing problems for people living in their own homes!!! The asian next door neighbours are very territorial. Our home is their territory!!!! I have been subjected to some very nasty crimes. Gangstalking, device hacking etc. Our home has been broken into by the next door neighbours!!! Been filmed inside our house and these clips have been posted on the internet!! Been assaulted inside our house. Various chemicals have been sprayed into our privately owned house by the South Indian Tamil (Privates) tenants. For the past 4 years!!! Mine and my 79yr old mother's eyesight has been damaged as a result. Was able to see clearly up to 20ft. Now been reduced to about 7ft!!! The adjoining house is owned by a Chinese family (their landlord). The Indian neighbours in the house painted blue are also involved. It is like living in a zoo!!!! Boundaries are not observed or respected. This is a free for all to do whatever enters their brains. Also, these neighbours/ privates tenants take class A drugs. These are extremely frightening times that we are living in. I have contacted the police about all the above mentioned this month. New crime: next door neighbours are forming GANGS. I worked I Slough for a while in the 80s. It wasn’t great then, but not on this level, not that I visited these areas, but you get a reasonable sense of the state of most places from the High Street.
Slough seems particularly blighted for a town in the South East and that is a bit of a surprise given its local company. Just down the road is Eton College, often referred to as ‘Slough Grammar’. The approach to Slough on the M4 is also dominated by Windsor Castle. Slough has arrived at this state from low place to begin with. In 1937, Poet Laureate, John Betjeman published his homage ‘Slough’.
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn’t fit for humans now,
There isn’t grass to graze a cow.
    Swarm over, Death!
Come, bombs and blow to smithereens
    Those air-conditioned, bright canteens,
Tinned fruit, tinned meat, tinned milk, tinned beans,
    Tinned minds, tinned breath.
Following WWII, what is now the site of the main industrial and business park was used as a dumping ground for disused military equipment. The industrial park provided me with my one memory of Slough that will not leave me. The estate is home to a Mars Bar factory, which on some hot summer days, covers the surrounding area with a thick sweet smell of processed chocolate and sugar, etc., which might be welcome on a cold winter day, but I don’t think they open the factory’s ventilation until it gets hotter.

Blame the gangmasters who bring people into Slough to work in the warehouses and factories below minimum wage leaving the immigrants in the same poverty trap as the indigenous inhabitants... Slough should be a boom town but the employers keep the pay low by shipping in workers.
One factory refurbishment I worked in Slough we found a mezzanine with about ten beds above a portacabin that seemed to be a makeshift living room/kitchen area... The place is a real eye-opener, a lot of shady things go on in that town.

It's the politicians who've done this....... treasonous politicians whose loyalty is to big business and international finance rather than the country. The White British population there has been extirpated and those that are left are often mentally ill with drug and alcohol addictions.

The video is incredibly misleading. I have visited that town in the past because of the movie studios located in and around it which is big business.
The centre is very industrial as it was the biggest trading estate in Europe. However the areas less than mile outside the centre, which all part of slough are very beautiful and nice. The high street looks like that because some years ago the Qataris bought up all of it. It going to have billions of pounds worth of redevelopment, hence why all the shops are empty as leases are not being renewed. Thats because its all going to be knocked down and rebuilt. The town is going through massive redevelopement. The London Tube line has now extended to it, which is going to rocket investment and house prices. According to the figures the town also has the most millionaires in the country. Showing just a few bad corners like every town has, is a very untruthful way to display the town.

    • @ukexplored
      @ukexplored  Před 4 měsíci +1

It's a fair representation of how Slough is right now. I hope all of that redevelopment happens, but plans change quickly when it comes to funding and redevelopment, I'll be keeping an eye out to see how things improve though. I want the best for areas like this!

  • @RichPober
    @RichPober Před 6 měsíci +3

Slough's economic decline mirrors the decline of its trading estate as a manufacturing centre. It is now a sterile data park full of data centres serving London's and Europe's banks, telecoms and internet companies. Many long-established businesses have long since relocated away from Slough or moved to Eastern Europe, where labour and business rates are cheaper. This has left its multi-culti residents with no place to find steady employment, and instead there is now a proliferation of box-vans parked in all the residential streets, as people have had to turn to becoming delivery drivers.
Slough, since the 1970s, has been a host town for each wave of immigration into the country. These new entrants could easily find work back then on the trading estate. However, the current cohort of asylum seekers have nowhere to work officially and hence put a strain on Slough's finances. Most have to work unofficially in the gig-economy as delivery riders, serving the needs of all the fast-food outlets that have sprung up in and around the High Street.
Also, Slough's multi-culti residents have no connection with the town, so they have no vested interest in maintaining it.
Part of the problem is that Slough's residents don't know how to hold Slough Borough Council to account for the town's physical decline, and especially for not addressing the accumulation of litter and general fly-tipping.
The easiest way to mobilise Slough Borough Council to do something about the state of each neighbourhood is to raise a complaint online.
Complaints tend to send a rocket up Slough Borough Council, as the number of complaints it receives are a key metric that they actively try to manage down and resolve. Report an issue and if nothing is done about it, then complain and then things will start to happen.
A lot of the problem with Slough is that the council and the police prefer to take the easy option of turning a blind eye and doing nothing whenever they can.

Slough maybe a dystopian landscape of criminality, vandalism, littering, drugs and unemployables but, hey, think of all the joys of cultural enrichment that the diverse and inclusive population has delivered, to the enormous benefit of the indigenous population. And though it’s easy to criticise, let’s respect the that the place surely suits the types who live there.

Ive lived in slough my whole life. Im 21. Its got its bad sides but I believe you don’t really know a town or people until you interact with them and see how they go about their days. Its easy to walk through a few areas and record. Slough’s a diverse place and so I have friends from all cultures and religions, its a beautiful experience. My interactions with the community are always pleasant and I never feel unsafe walking through slough day or night. The council are somewhat to blame for the state of the high street and other areas, they are quite stupid and waste money unnecessarily, recently having gone bankrupt. With the easy access to London by the new elizabeth line I do anticipate it to become more of a commuter town in the coming years. It already is but with the elizabeth line its gained a bit more popularity.

As someone who lives in Slough, and pretty close to where this was filmed, only pointing to a town's problems doesn't give you an accurate overall picture. Slough is also one of the best places to work in the UK, but yes folks in Slough litter something cronic and fly tipping is also a big problem. It's a personal pet peeve that has made me start picking up others trash in my road as people don't respect their own neighbourhoods and think it's okay to do it to mine. And yes rats is a big issue which I'm fighting as we speak as people feed birds in the park which attracts rats. Yes the town centre is a dump, all the good shops have wisely left years ago and the homeless and street drinkers rule the roost. And yes Slough has dabbled in multi-culturism which has made the town grow but has become a little soulless with many different communities doing their thing, but their doesn't appear to be one unifying culture that binds them. Oh and yes the council is broke and services are a bit hit and miss sometimes. But otherwise a lovely place.

You locked your car doors but I'd been doing that since being a student in Salford. I can't believe just how bad Slough looks now. The town centre used to be vibrant with loads of good eateries and shops. Looks like a turd town now. Could have a lot to do with the council going insanely bankrupt as well as the local population not caring how the place looks. Never shit on your doorstep springs to mind but this is lost on the majority of Slough's population by the looks of things. Community, pride, ethics and values seem to have been pissed into the wind over 20 years.

    I live in Slough.
Its not as segregated as people say.
I think its great that Black blokes are systematically going round screwing many (not all) Chav White girls on poor run down council estates in Britwell, Cippenham Manor Park, Wexham and Langley.
It makes me extremely happy that the Whites and Blacks indulge in a lifestyle that makes them happy.
At least they are intergrated which is what they always wanted.
The Asians as usual own all the shops in Slough.
They are the most hard-working people I've ever seen but they do not speak English very well.
The Romanians form their own little communities and don't really interact with anyone as most of them do not speak English very well either.
The Polish people are very racist towards Blacks and they also form their own little communities.
The main problem is that all the various groups do not interact with each other.
It's mainly only Blacks and Whites who actually interact with each other with most of the interaction being sexual in nature.
Integration can only work when everyone speaks the same language.
If no one bothers to learn to speak English integration will never work.
The Polish people are very hard-working but they are very racist towards Blacks so intergration is not possible.
They are also White but they are not Anglo-Saxon so their behaviour is very different from the indigenous British.
The only two groups of people in the entire country of Great Britain that are truly integrated are indigenous British people and Black Caribbean people.
The interaction between these two grouos is mainly sexual in nature.
We see this behaviour on poor run down council estates throughout Britain.
Whatever makes them happy is cool with me.

      John 3:16-21

I’m from a decently sized city in germany and live in a part where all shops are closing and stuff..I was a little surprised when walking to the train station from our hotel bc of the litter and just well….bad vibes? When we walked through it at night I must confess I got a little frightened by the vibes but the people in the shops were at least very nice!

The challenges that have arisen in this locality have seen a significant escalation subsequent to the influx of Romanian expatriates. This includes the solicitation concerns mentioned by the narrator. It would be inaccurate to categorize these issues as solely an Asian predicament, particularly when one observes that the majority of businesses in the area are run by individuals of South Asian descent.
Instead, the issue of destitution and solicitation is emblematic of a broader concern that reflects deficiencies in both central and local government management, particularly with regard to the Eastern European demographic in the region.

I was born and raised in Slough. It was a beautiful and friendly town. It's sad to see what it's become my family still love there. I worked in the criminal justice system. The influx of individuals from war torn places, individuals whose cultures are very different from ours. The city Council infest more into those who never contributee to our system. It has been lead by the Asian communities for decades. Every job is given to Asians and not the Afro Caribbean or white English communities. Many of my family and the West Indian communities don't go into the shit high street. Its got worst over the 12 years since I have been there. I have emigrated to where my parents homeland, as I feel I can no longer live in the country that I was born in. The city Council did nothing for our communities, I was raised on the other side of Bayliss park and when the English and Caribbean communities where using Bayliss park, house, the Orchard center these were well kept. These spaces were given to the Asians and within few years it was a dump and we had no where to go. Chalvey had a strong black west Indian people the majority were from my parents island, we are proud people and loved it we were proud to tell anyone that we were from there, now no one wish to state such things.

You shouldn't mislead people with such rubbish.
This video is a poor assessment of Slough taken by a person
      who needs educating.
All he has achieved is promoting racial hatred, racial tension
and racist views from ignorant people in society.
Just look at the derogatory language used by people leaving
      messages.
I think the people who are leaving such messages probably live
      in a dump themselves.
Crime, fly tipping and dumping of rubbish was prevalent before.
You say the town was better then?
Homelessness, poverty, crime, fly tipping, all these
issues have existed over the decades.

As a child of Indian immigrants yes I agree that immigration has played a part but it's not the only factor, Britwell was always rough back in the 90s as were the council areas of Langley between the nice Langley Road and London Road. Both of these areas were White British working class areas. Did you ever watch Road Wars, again it mostly featured White British people when Slough was featured. Slough still has some of the best schools in the country, the High Street has gone downhill but that's happened to many towns, even Windsor's is going the same way.
