We live in 'Caravan City'...our beds are like coffins but it's too expensive to rent here

  • WITH its expansive fields, river valley views and tree-lined paths, it’s easy to see why David Attenborough once called the Bristol Downs the “jewel in the city’s crown”.
But locals are despairing over the growing number of people choosing to make the lush green area their home - by setting up camp in vans and motorhomes.
In 2024 the scenic south west city was not named in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live round-up for the first time in the guide’s 12-year history - having previously topped the list in 2017 - in part due to its “ruthless” property market.
According to 2023 figures, Bristol is the most expensive place to live in Britain outside London.
It’s the lack of affordable homes that have forced hundreds of people to give up on conventional living and turn to a life on wheels.
A recent report from Bristol City Council says there are now up to 800 inhabitants of vans, motorhomes and caravans around the Downs - made up of Clifton Down and Durdham Down.
It’s now the city with the largest number of van dwellers in the UK, and angry residents say they are “disgusted”.
The free parking makes life easier for those living in the 650 vehicles - a figure which has quadrupled since 2020 - in the area, recently dubbed ‘Caravan City’.
Helen Morris, 79, has been walking the Downs area for 40 years, and lived there since 2013.
She tells The Sun: “I think it’s disgusting that they are allowed to live here.
“They’ve parked directly on our road in the past and I’ve called the police because of the noise and mess.
“They make such a mess with their rubbish, I’d like them to disappear and think the council should do something about it."

The government doesn't like people to enjoy their life they want people to suffer, it seems that that's their primary purpose. I've been living in my RV since 2013 parking outside work for 2 years before travelling around Australia and I've been living in far North Queensland since 2020 when I escape the Melbourne scam demic that I'm going back on the road again next February when I get the age pension if the government or council tried to stop me from living at a friend's place, I would certainly have a few words to them that I couldn't post and how were they to know that I'm not living inside and just parking my vehicle there.

The goverments want people totally dependant on them.
They are stopping people from being self sufficient, growing their own vegetables and food ,
not allowing caravans, making people pay for the water coming from their own wells ,
not allowing tiny houses, making people get rid of large numbers of farm animals ( cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys etc) wanting people to start registering all vegetable gardens,
making more controlling and more intrusive laws, trying to control things that aren’t any business of the goverment! Trying to control every aspect of our lives, where we go,how we live, what we eat and so on.

Who left more rubbish at Castlemorton, there is no rubbish there anymore yet people still bang on about a rave that happened over 30 years ago. Since then, houses have been built. So i ask u again who left more rubbish? I will tell you who left more rubbish - the people who built the house. Sadly government do not want people living in caravans or motorhomes, these are too cheap, plus they want council tax as well as tax from property rental and high interest and mortgage loans to be a slave to the banks. They want a high cost of living, this in turn makes people work hard; work longer hours and not complain about pay or working conditions in fear of losing their job and being replaced by the thousands who would jump into the job within minutes. It's all part of the masterplan.

    • @user-tk2sc3rz9t

Their masterplan is to keep the cost of living high as it aids banks; government; the elite; and business. My partner; myself and my large dog, live in a caravan on a caravan park in Lancashire. 560 a month with electric; water and wastage. I did own a large terrace on a busy road but due to constantly increasing mortgage interest rates, ended costing me nearly 800 each month on the 50k I still owed! plus ever increasing council tax, water, utilities, etc..Sold my house within 1 week and decided to buy a large double anxle caravan and from the sale could afford an immaculate countryside detached house with large garden and detached garage outright in Spain, best decision I ever made! Plus yearly council tax is a couple of hundred. I was only lucky enough to jump on a house I needed to renovate in the early 2000's, before house prices shot up. I was lucky, feel sorry for younger people these days getting on the property market or renting. Was alot easier to buy or rent in the 1990's, now, even finding a house, not even a decent one, to rent, especially with a pet, is extremely difficult. There are a few now living full time onsite, one due to a no fault eviction! Some stay a week or so in campervans they live in! This country isnt going to get any better! Councils need to buy land and rent spaces for caravans for people who can not get housing. If campsites can do this and make profits, surely its a viable business as well as a form of keeping people from living on the streets or sofa surfing till the government can sort more housing stock. Even an acre of land can site 25 to 30 caravans!

Put wood thin frames around the edges of the walls, then stretch the plastic then gaffer tape and staple it down. Gaffer tape over the staples. Then use cheap fabric like unbleached calico to line. That's not a solution basically what you are saying is......the solution to people being forced into living in caravans is.....people should live in caravans.

its heart breaking to see this. Government has completely failed the public, and who do they answer to. They should be living in these caravans as well.

City should help them by scheduling trash pick ups, providing water, and collecting black water. Trucks offering these services could come around once or twice a week. This will help to keep the area clean, and help the morale of the people. It is better than having them live on the streets.

“You don’t just chuck it out & let the infrastructure deal with it” …so true, & something those of us fortunate enough to be council tax payers should bear in mind. I believe that it’s the attitude to waste (of every kind) that exercises most people. There must be a better solution that protects the socially responsible & penalizes the rest.
