    A lot of the things that we do are a result of unconscious habit rather than conscious choice.
    It is unclear how the conscious and unconscious selves relate to each other.
    But if you want to have healthy habits, you must learn to integrate your unconscious self with your more thoughtful conscious self. For instance, people with good self-control are acting on habit.

    What's a good habit to get into?

    • @Ewr42
      @Ewr42 Před 2 lety +1

      living life unbounded by a schedule.
      wake up when you want to, do only what you want to do and sleep when tired
      habits seem like a self defense mechanism for dealing with the capitalistic 9-5 schedule that rules our lifes and prevents us from actually living life as we're supposed to.
      we already lose a third of our lifes to sleeping, do we really want to lose another third by being slaved?
      use your time to grow your food, do art, exploit capitalism by selling goods of actual value that you make and don't do anything that won't make you happy directly.
      we don't need money, we need actual goods and services, we need food, shelter, water and healthcare.
      capitalism's imposition that you can only get it if you sacrifice a third of your life to doing nothing of real value that is just something that perpetuates the status quo but doesn't help society in any way is not only unnatural, but cruel.
      how about we make a habit out of living life as the animals we are instead of the domesticated slaves subservient to capitalism's mental prison? it's really not that hard to refuse to be exploited and find secondary ways to get by in a world where money is the game.
      just so I actually provide a good example, dirt is free, water too(c'mon, collecting rainwater is prohibited in the us and you guys are just ok with it?) and making fire is something we have been doing for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years.
      wash dirt, make clay, form clay, fire clay, sell handcrafted ceramics.
      0 investment besides the time spent with a hobby, and it should be a hobby, not labor.
      you can even sell grass as a gourmet supplement of fiber and chlorophyll and people will just throw their money at you for it.
      or you can grow something really valuable like plants and fungis, which can be done anywhere, and if you have the space, chickens and their eggs(which can also go for a gourmet free-range natural life and diet price). banana plants will give you free bananas year round and they're a weed, so you'll have plenty excess to sell(again, exploiting capitalism's fetichization and labeling them organic non-gmo and all that). lion's mane mushrooms you can literally make 1+1=4 with them by waiting a couple weeks to colonize more grains, you could also clone them infinitely and sell it in dried pieces to be taken as a nootropic nutraceutical supplement, same with edible mushrooms, hell, you can clone even plants and propagate them infinitely too, only bounded by the space available for them.
      so really, it is possible to do more than just survive in capitalism paying the price with your life.
      in fact, one can live life by exploiting capitalism back.
      make the decision to flip the game back on them. don't survive on their terms, life out your life and be happy, there's nothing more important than that.
      pursue love and knowledge, not cars and goods with no intrinsic value.
      give up your habit of looking down and doing nothing.
      make a habit out of life itself.

    - A lot of things we do are out of habit instead out of choice.
    - Our habit system is not part of our conscious awareness, it's part of the unconscious.
    - People who have really good self-control are actually acting on habit.
    - Having an effective habit can set you up to the things you we want in life.

    There are two modes of living. These are the individual mode, where one must self-reflect in order to grow, and the collective mode, where people interact and imitate and respond to each other's behaviors in order to grow.

    • @The-Well
      @The-Well  Před 2 lety +2

      Good point! It's interesting to think of how individuals can come up with ideas, get buy-in from a collective group, and then those beliefs or habits get encouraged among other individuals, potentially for generations.

    So how do I change my habits and make my new “habits” the norm?

    • @TobyHardtospell
      @TobyHardtospell Před 2 lety +5

      There's a lot of different approaches. One simple way that I use:
      1) Pick one behavior at a time that you want to change. Identify your current habit, and pick a behavior you want to do instead (it's easiest to stop a negative behavior if you replace it with a positive one).
      2) Use the "ABC" - Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence model. In addition to the behavior, identify the antecedent: the conditions are before you engage in the behavior you wish to change (at home? after work? in the morning? when you are bored?) and the consequence (the result of engaging in that behavior). This may take some time to observe yourself to see patterns.
      For example, say you check your phone too much. For a few days, you make a mental note of when you check your phone. You realize that you often do it when you are bored, or when you get notifications for a particular app. The consequence is you often spend a long time on your phone once you are there and feel frustrated that you're now behind on your work. Instead of checking your phone, you decide you would rather read a page of a book you need to for school.
      3) Design an intervention that will affect all 3 three aspects by removing the antecedents, changing the behavior to the new one when it does occur, and changing the consequences when you do the correct behavior.
      So in the phone example, you could reduce the antecedents by silencing notifications for that app, deleting it, leaving your phone in your room when you would like to be studying, etc. When you are bored and have the instinct to reach for your phone, you can change your behavior by remembering the intervention and reaching for your book instead. And you can change the consequence by giving yourself a reward every time you do this successfully: for example, having a fresh piece of gum.
      Nothing's ever effortless, but this is a good script to help you gradually replace bad habits with better ones.

    Notes:
    - Successful people have worked out how to integrate their habits and their conscious goals.
    - They have worked out how to make their habits work for them to achieve their goals.
    - We don't actually have access to our habits - it is an illusion that we choose to do things.
    - This is why our habits can so easily be in conflict with our conscious goals.
