- In this latest episode of Gravel Diaries, Felix and Liam tackle a one-of-a-kind bike race in South Wales!
The BikeRadar duo take part in the 2023 Battle on the Beach. It’s a mass-start event that takes in sweeping sands and narrow singletrack. With such varied terrain, the decision on which bike to ride is an important one - mountain or gravel bike?
In this video, we see how Felix and Liam get on in the race and look at their chosen steeds. What would they change if they were to do it again?
If that isn’t enough, we also speak to some of the other competitors to see what they chose to ride and why.
Which bike would you choose for a race such as this? Let us know in the comments 👇

Which was your favourite bike? What do you want to see in the next episode of BikeRadar Gravel Diaries? 👇👇🤝
Come to a beachrace in the netherlands. The level of the field and the speeds are insan0e, especially with a strong tailwind! And lots of special beach builds on display.
@@clickbait4820 that’s very kind of you!
Every British bike channel right now "Gravel VS Mountain Bike! Battle on the Beach coming right up!".
It was a great race…do it if you can
@@fentuz it does looks really fun!
That Imming! so cool
My chain is rusting just from looking at this :D
Liam and Felix used a wax lubricant to avoid the drivetrain getting coated in sand, the downsides though meant Felix's Scalpel resembled a sea anchor the day after the event! Thanks for watching, from all at BikeRadar 🫶
I recently did beach rides with my XC and as long as you hose the bike afterwards it isn't a real problem. You will get some sand into the drive train but you can blast it off with compressed air.
A fat tire bike is the king here, unfortunately mine is not with me at the moment
Chris Opie is such a positive guy. Good to see him in the wild.
Thank you!
Budget bike by opieeeeeee💯💯💯
🎉🎉gets my vote, too.
Get on! Nice riding Will.
So the best bike was a Monstercross, got it
Drop bar with knobbies ftw🎉
Most people are not aware that located just a few miles from Wales is the Isle of Dolphins.
🐬
Ahhh, the Cannondale lefty. The answer to a question nobody was asking...
I quite liked my bike 😅but I would say that…
More XC Mtb stuff
Thanks for the comment, we'll take it on board! In the meantime, we've got Lapierre's latest XC hardtail in the next Tech of The Month episode 👍
Felix’s rain jacket at the start looked cool - what was it?
Felix's jacket is the Rapha Explore Lightweight Jacket which was featured in our Tech of The Month bikepacking special 👉 czcams.com/video/_JAaDWUYcwQ/video.html
It was like a cycling youtube who's who. Just missing Cade and Juliette
Maybe next year Liam can get Jack out of retirement...
1.18 : a pretty exact copy of the Degenkolb, MvdP, Philipsen situation...😮
It can happen to the best of us 😅
Where is Jack?
Jack is a busy lad these days but we've got plenty of daft ideas we know he'll love to be a part of!
oh no, we'd like to have a new genre of bike. Beach Bike (instead of gravel or xc bike)
Hanebrink did it 50 years ago
Simply a fat tire bike, it's unbeatable on a beach and can even ride sand deserts
Nothing beats a fat tire bike on a beach
🏖️😎
If it cannot fit 46t-30t 2X chainrings, it ain't gravel.
Cannondale lefty forks are a complete fail. My 2019 came with one and I had serious trouble with the hub. Had it replaced under warranty and same issue. Bearing and hub cap issues on both the original hub and replacement hub. Terrible idea.
*slow clap
Exactly why I'll never buy any bike with proprietary components like the Lefty, if stuff breaks I can't just slap spare components on while it gets fixed. I avoid Cannondale like the plague because they are the worst offenders in introducing stupid proprietary ideas to the market
Bestest shock ever.
Seems like a lot of sketch riders in this race!
