The Scots were singing “O Flower of Scotland”. It commemorates the youth (the “flower” of the of the nation) mounting a successful defence against invasion by the larger neighbour in mediaeval times. It says that those days are in the past, but that Scotland can be a nation again.
The specific battle it references is probably Bannockburn in 1314, when Edward ii of England’s very large army was beaten by Robert the Bruce’s much smaller army. It involved an act of great personal courage and physical skill by Bruce and some very shrewd psychology (on the first day of minor skirmishes) so that the next day they were able to use unusual tactics that took advantage of very specific details of the landscape. One of the rare times when a battle plan worked out in reality - if anything, even better than hoped. Interestingly, the two historical accounts written by eyewitnesses were both written by people in the English army.
