I heard this track well over 30 times during a self-imposed despair challenge, and never once did it grate. The part at 1:45 hits me every time. Its a perfect boss theme, it brings us full circle thematically to the first boss with how this is not a heroic, triumphant song. Here, however, we 100% understand the final boss' pain, and this track emphasises it. The sadness, the fear of further loss, the desperation to continue living. The little uplifting flourishes here and there are those last bits of hope that are being fought for. When it picks up in pace we can feel the boss' resolve to fight, and the music celebrates it. I love that about this game's OST. Oftentimes the OST is not cheering you on, it's cheering the boss on, and when you understand the motives of the bosses, a part of you roots for them too.
