- Hi everyone here is some tips and tricks to split wood with a splitting wedge and a maul. ALWAYS use safety glasses and steel toe boots when doing this! NEVER use a splitting axe to pound metal wedges ONLY use a splitting maul (like shown) with metal wedges! Hope you enjoy!
This was a perfect refresher course.
Here in the UK we call the centre of the wood the heartwood, this is the tougher part of the wood. The dead centre of the log we call the pith and is very small. The outer part of the log we call the sapwood. Cheers, John.
Yes it is the same terminology here my friend! Cheers!
These 4 pound Twisted Cone Wedges ARE AWESOME!
I do have two of those!
@@HomesteadJay Cool there my go to wedge👍👍
lol I didn’t know you needed more than 1 wedge, that’s what I was doing wrong 😅 cheers from North Shore MA
Howdy!
Thanks Jay. Many months ago I learned how to split wood from you. I have been doing it since about late November and do enjoy this kind of work. I also have the wood splitter but for some reason I enjoy using the maul and splitting ax better.
Hey Ovi! The wood splitting is very satisfying indeed! The machines are nice but the maul and or axe are fulfilling for the soul!
I haven't split that way since I was a little kid! I remember back in the day my dad carrying a couple splitting wedges in his chain bucket for the big nasty ones we couldn't lift!! I should do some old school splitting one of these days hahaha!! Stay safe my friend
Hahah it is old school indeed! Those wedges are HEAVY haha id hate to lug those around in a pack lol
Good explanation Jay.. I use wedges all the time. Less mess than the chainsaw and its great getting the heart rate..
Yeah I dont like the "noodling" with the saw! Rather swing the maul for the larger ones!
Good afternoon Jay
Good job..
But as you get older those tools become enemies to you.. hahahah
Have a great rest of your week my friend.
As always stay safe and always be kind.

I use a double bit to split. My dad had 2 splitting mauls. He broke the steel eyes out of both of them. He is also a double bit guy.
Double bits are nice! I need to get one hahah! Im surprised the eyes broke! Interesting!
@@HomesteadJay I'm thinking he was using them in really cold weather. But maybe he didn't know his own strength at the time. Lol.
@@myronparks3495 hahah maybe!
Stay away from the straight splitting wedges! GET THE TWISTED ONES. See that piece of metal fly off. 4:30 these cone wedges hasn't done that yet Woo that would have hurt> if it hit ya in the family jewels 5:20
True advice indeed!
Fantastic video jay.
Where can a guy get these splitting wedges?
You can find these anywhere prob online or local hardware store!
Split it like a man!😂😅😂😅
Did you see my other entries for let split this? I split the rounds from the side, remember that as long as it splits and you don’t get hurt, your doing good!
Yes if done a few side splits with the sawmill slabs since they are so tall lol more power to split them that way then vertical lol
Split like our four fathers did lol 😂
Have you seen the old videos of the two old timers going swing for swing haha its amazing how they operate tandem back and fourth lol
@@HomesteadJay priceless , strong as bulls
We have hardwood here in Australia and we need 15° or less for a splitting wedge.
Watch this video and see how hard our wood is
