    Here in the UK we call the centre of the wood the heartwood, this is the tougher part of the wood. The dead centre of the log we call the pith and is very small. The outer part of the log we call the sapwood. Cheers, John.

    Thanks Jay. Many months ago I learned how to split wood from you. I have been doing it since about late November and do enjoy this kind of work. I also have the wood splitter but for some reason I enjoy using the maul and splitting ax better.

      Hey Ovi! The wood splitting is very satisfying indeed! The machines are nice but the maul and or axe are fulfilling for the soul!

    I haven't split that way since I was a little kid! I remember back in the day my dad carrying a couple splitting wedges in his chain bucket for the big nasty ones we couldn't lift!! I should do some old school splitting one of these days hahaha!! Stay safe my friend

    Good explanation Jay.. I use wedges all the time. Less mess than the chainsaw and its great getting the heart rate..

      Yeah I dont like the "noodling" with the saw! Rather swing the maul for the larger ones!

    I use a double bit to split. My dad had 2 splitting mauls. He broke the steel eyes out of both of them. He is also a double bit guy.

    Stay away from the straight splitting wedges! GET THE TWISTED ONES. See that piece of metal fly off. 4:30 these cone wedges hasn't done that yet Woo that would have hurt> if it hit ya in the family jewels 5:20

    Did you see my other entries for let split this? I split the rounds from the side, remember that as long as it splits and you don’t get hurt, your doing good!

      @HomesteadJay  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes if done a few side splits with the sawmill slabs since they are so tall lol more power to split them that way then vertical lol

    We have hardwood here in Australia and we need 15° or less for a splitting wedge.
    Watch this video and see how hard our wood is
