  • The only Double-decker Shinkansen E4 model finished the run.
Japanese rail fans are regretting this abolishment.
I went to Echigo-Yuzawa in Nigata prefecture and returned to Tokyo by 'Max TANIGAWA' at Green Car.
Please enjoy watching the trip of the final Double-decker Shinkansen.

I would personally buy a 8 car set from JR to have it shipped overseas and setup on a display track here in America where I live to honor this legendary train. Thank you for your service E4, you will always be in our hearts.

in January 2018 coming back to Tokyo from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto I've decided to get off at Omiya and hop on a MAX TOKI for the rest of the journey to Tokyo. Little did I know it would be my last chance to ride the double decker... Now I'm so glad I did that.

Amazing, twenty four years old and it looks brand new. These trains run every 15min, 30 min, hour or couple of hours? Where are the people? You know I dont care for crowds but.... Are too many trains running and the people are spread out? You must know the good time to get on. They have to be busier before and after businesses open and close? Thank you and a big thank you to MAX!

I wonder why double decker trains like this are no longer made. It seems to me that these would be a much more efficient option than standard single floor configurations.

Thank you so much for your comment !! This Double decker Shinkansen is a little bit old, so it can't run at high speed.
Current Shinkansen is needed more than 320km/h speed. But I love double decker and expect new model.

@@CJWJR This double decker was made mainly for many commuters to Tokyo because this has big capacity. But this demand disappeared several years ago.

I viewed this again and wanted to ask you what is in the long corridor, is there private cabins in there or something?

This is double decker Shinkansen so mechanical equipments are placed there because there is no other space

The interior is somewhat unpleasant. Those greyish corridors are depressing , it all feels like a coffin on rails.

It's a good question. Shinkansen must run at super high speed but this double decker type is difficult to meet a current standard.
