    - The idea of this video is to show the evolution of Shinkansen trains through time, especially from the aspects of their appearance and their performance.
Today there are many series of Shinkansen trains. Naturally, each of them is sort of an upgrade to the previous series. Having in mind that this evolutionary process has been complicated by the privatization of the Japanese railways we will introduce the trains according to lines instead of the order by which they appeared.
We covered the following lines and series:
    1. Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen: 0-series, 100-series, 300-series, 500-series, 700-series, Class 923 "Doctor Yellow", N700, N700A and N700S
    2. Tohoku, Joetsu, Hokuriku and Mini Shinkansen: 200-series, 400-series, E1-series, E2-series, E3 series, E4 series, E5 series, E6 series and E7 series
    3. Kyushu Shinkansen: 800-series
    4. BONUS: JR East ALFA-X and Genbi Shinkansen
If you want to know all about the Shinkansen train series, check out our video!
    Enjoy!

What is truly amazing about Japan's Shinkansen is not the technology of the trains, but the number of trains in operation.
At the most frequent times, there are more than 10 trains departing from Tokyo Station within an hour on the same line.
As a Japanese, I am amazed at the fact that the Shinkansen operates with such a large number of trains without any accidents and almost no delays,
and I have a lot of respect for the people involved in the operation.

Something worth noting is that the Shinkansen shown from 13:09 to 13:20 isn't actually an E5, but rather one of the four very similar H5 sets. The main difference between the two types is that the H5 has improved heating equipment, extra protection for electronics and other measures to combat the colder conditions along the Hokkaido Shinkansen lines. The main way to tell them apart at a glance is the stripe between the green and white. On the E5 the stripe is pink, whereas on the H5 it's purple.

The E5/H5 series has a higher top speed and is the newer model but the Tohoku Shinkansen has a much lower load and was built later than the Tokaido Shinkansen so that effects how fast the trains can go. Well, then there are lots to mention. The CRH2A is not too different from E2, while CRH2C just with just slightly more technological domestication to raise the speed to 300km/h.
AFAIK the mainland Chinese authorities also wanted the 700/800 series initially but the NipSha doesn't export technologies, thus Beijing instead chose Kawasaki. It worth mentioning that although high-speed trains has been evolved very fast (2C&3C, 380ABCD, CR400ABF) in mainland China, higher-speed train no so, thus 2A has kept domaninant the 200km/h orders for 10 years until two years ago CR300AF/BF enters the service. I live in Nagano, the Joetsu Shinkansen was newly opened for the 1998 olympics with the E2 train. Special interior features included luggage storage for skis and snowboards, and the trains were all-wheel drive (first in the world at the time I believe) to allow for the steep grades and possibility of ice and snow on the run through the mountains. It's also why the speed is limited on that particular route. The E2's on that line were 100% replaced by the E7 when the line was extended out to Kanazawa.

This is the best video detailing the rolling stock of the Shinkansen series. I personally like the 0 Series the best. Their classic “bullet nose” really stands out to me, and is undoubtedly one of the most famous icons of the Japanese.
That said, there’s a few thing I’d like to mention. First off, there are variants of 200 Series with the 100 Series nose instead of the “bullet nose”.
Secondly, a variant of the 700 Series, the 700-7000, also known as Rail Star, remains in service with JR West. The variant has a different livery from the JR East version in having grey and yellow bands.
Thirdly, I’d like to mention that there were even earlier experimental units, such as the Type 1000 and WIN350, as well as older “Doctor Yellows” derived from the 0 Series . There were all withdrawn of course.
Put aside those stuffs, this is a very good video! Hope to see more of your content.

@@sbeve7445 While I understand where they've come up with the 260 km/h limit, I wanted to also convey the geographical justification for Hokuriku's speed limit specifically. It is one of the longer routes, after all, comparable to Tokaido and San'yo, so people would wonder why the trains don't go faster there. Speaking of Tokaido, its 285 km/h limit is caused by the curves due to it being the oldest route passing through myriad coastal cities of central Japan rather than opting for a straighter mountainous route between Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. There's not much incentive to raise the speed limit there because of the construction of the Chuo maglev shinkansen.

The "Series 600" trains are missing from the three-digit series that started with Series 0. The reason for this is that Series E1 was positioned as Series 600 in the design stage.
Also, since there were no other series in the Shinkansen until the Series 100 debuted, the Series 0 was simply called "Shinkansen cars".

I second what @route55qatar said, your videos are well researched and quite accurate, thank you for your videos. As I write from my residence in Japan, I wanted to point out two pieces of information. Yes, the 500-series trains ran on the Tokaido track to Tokyo but were not JR Central (Tokai/Tokaido-sen) trains. The 500-series trains belong to JRWest Sanyo Shinkansen. While I am sure Railways Explained has explained this in previous videos I will quickly explain again. When JNR (Japan National Rail) broke up, it created several companies. Each company received a local train network and a Shinkansen line. As the video showed, south of Tokyo there were two segments, those segments are connected which allow passengers to hop on a shinkansen in Tokyo and disembark in Hakata w/o needing to transfer. Trains departing Tokyo station and ending at Shin-Osaka are JR Tokai trains. Trains departing Tokyo and bound for points beyond Shin-Osaka are usually Sanyo Shinkansen (JR West) trains. JR West buys access on the JR Tokai Shinkansen line to get their rail passengers to and from Tokyo. That is why one would observe a 500-series train on JR Tokai's rail bound for or depart from Tokyo Station but it was not a JR Tokyo train. As the video said, it's no longer used on the JR Tokai section anymore however, JR West's N700 still trains are. While JR Tokai and JR East terminals are Tokyo Station, their tracks are separate and do not cross at any point, so travelling between JR Tokai and JR East Shinkansens require a transfer at Tokyo Station. Each company has their own train R&D Technology divisions (except, JR West and JR Hokkaido...they are the poorest of the JR companies) and they design their own trains and systems as well as export the technology and construct Shinkansen systems overseas. JR Tokai is the most successful, as you see they bid for & won the TX project, bid for the California project but lost out, built the Taiwan system and are building the mega-lev central line in Japan on their own w/o the government's assistance. JR East has begun to step up in recent years but I am unaware of any projects outside of Japan. The recently listed JR Kyushu is quite famous in Japan for their local commuter train designs (would love to see a video highlighting their rolling stock). Their Shinkansen looks rather basic on the outside but the interior is quite famous for being made with local wood from Kyushu forest. Final point, there is perhaps a reason for JR East and JR West (Sanyo) to jointly design and build rolling stock. The next segment of the Nagano, Kanazawa Shinkansen is scheduled to open up in a year or two and connect to Fukui before completing a circuit ending at Shin-Osaka. This will allow JR East to get its trains to Osaka w/o being connected to JR Tokai.

The dimension of 500 series is slightly smaller, so the seats capacity also reduced. That's why JR Central stopped allowing the 500 series on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
but in my opinion, 500 series has the most unique body design because of its cylindrical shape. It stands out between other JR Central-West boring-shaped shinkansen trains...

    • @popozz
      @popozz Před 2 lety +4

No, the seating capacity of the 500 series is being one more than the 700 and N700 series. (500 Series 1,324 seats, 700 & N700 Series 1,323 seats)
The reason why the 500 series was disliked by JR Tokai is because there is only one door in cars 1 and 16, which takes time to get on and off and causes delays. Also, it is expensive to manufacture, there is no need to go 300km/h on the Tokaido Shinkansen section, and they wanted all the cars to be common.
