  • Singularity is a time-travel-themed FPS made by Raven Software. Despite seeing fairly warm reception on launch, it ended up being their final game (Call of Duty doesn't count). In this retrospective, I want to examine how well this game has aged and whether or not it's still worth a play roughly 12 years down the line.

Also, I accidentally contradict myself by (implicitly) saying the minigun both sounds weak and powerful. Let's just say both of these claims cancel each other out.

24:45 makes sense. i remember reading Raven Software's developer diary blog for singularity in my youth. they remarked on how they planned the island's overall geography early on, deliberately designing it as a crescent so you'd very often be able to see far ahead to future levels

That was definitely interesting. It’s too bad that AA games have disappeared thanks to games being exorbitantly expensive to make. I die titles unfortunately don’t have the resources for something like this, and the modern/AAA studios are EXTREMELY risk adverse because of the aforementioned cost of production. Sure, a lot of the AA games were highly derivative mashups of different features that were copied poorly. But, at the same time we’d occasionally get a gem like this. I should get around to playing it.
It’s really weird to think that Raven used to have a lot of creative freedom and made a lot of great games because their modern version is sadly just a CoD support studio. It would’ve been interesting to see what their full vision of this game was.
It’s also really interesting thinking about how a lot of studios would just copy features from other games, while misunderstanding what made those work in the first place. Oftentimes they’d be at odds with the game’s core design, and are simultaneously shallow because they didn’t go far enough with them. In a way I kind of like how things will be really dated because they act as a time capsule for how things were at the time. There’s a lot of games from this era I really liked and grew up with.
    Good video
    I can take it

I thoroughly enjoyed this and Wolfenstein 2009.
I tried to buy Singularity, but it didn't launch. So I had to uh... "borrow" an copy, and that worked.

It is raven so your not wrong in thinking these guys were gonna make something epic. They made soldier of fortune 1 and 2

I picked up Singularity at launch on Xbox 360 and I didn't regret it. I prefer it over Wolfenstein 2009. Dang shame Singularity suffered such a troubled development cycle and Raven got banished to the CoD mines. Rather see something like it or Soldier of Fortune again than an early 90s FPS like Prodeus.
Guess that leaves Timeshift to still review. Wait, the Timesplitters Trilogy dealt with time travel too...

Timeshift has been considered for my channel. Given what I've seen of it, though, I'm not sure I would have nearly as much to say about it as DoD and Singularity.

@marriedtomychair, If I recall correctly, Timeshift didn't have a smooth development either. But, yeah, Singularity was better and more interesting than Timeshift.
Also, there's another Vietnam War FPS that might make Shellshock 2 look good, Tunnel Rats The Game. Based on an Uwe Boll film lol.

@@Gruntvc It's a strange coincidence you mention Tunnel Rats. I've known about it for a while, but I just recently learned that it's no longer abandonware. 20 dollars is a bit of a zany asking price, though.
I will admit, I am curious how bad it actually is. Maybe being a sub-par budget shooter based on one of the most miserable parts of one of the most horrific wars in recent memory somehow cancels out all the badness. I'm kidding, it's probably one of the worst games ever made.

      @marriedtomychair, Guess it's Shellshock 2 then.
Yeah, don't spend $20 on Tunnel Rats...

I love artstyle of that game. I mean it's sort of "how westerner sees soviet union", and it not even remotely resembles soviet stuff.
