  • Marathon is the 1994 first-person shooter developed by Bungie, and is widely considered to be the Mac market's equivalent to Doom 1. Is it still enjoyable to play to this day? In this analysis / review / retrospective / whatever goofy "games analyst" term you want to call it, I look into it and tell you what I think.

To clarify on your confusion regarding when the source code was released: The Marathon 2 source code was released around 2005. The Marathon Infinity source code was released around 2011-ish. Though the fans working on Aleph One managed to get Marathon Infinity working even before then. Allegedly, though, the source code to Forge and Anvil have been lost to time. [Though there's some open source alternatives that handle the same tasks, to allow people to still make fan scenarios and what not.]

If Halo is the definitive modern FPS, then Marathon is a definitive classic FPS. Literally everything Marathon sets out to do, it does with flying colours.

Another good review and also one of the first videos I’ve seen where Marathon’s awesome music wasn’t hated on, which is a plus. I have to agree with the level design critique, as much as I hate to say it. It reminds me a lot of the original SystemShock, where the floor/wall textures are pretty repetitive and the floor plans are a little overly-complicated; if just one of these two issues were mitigated, it’d be a huge improvement.

I really love the original System Shock, but yeah, its level design can be a bit of a mess. Even after three playthroughs, I keep getting lost in Engineering.

good vid! certainly not the game for someone too attention deficit, but it pays off for whoever can pay attention enough to read the terminals until the end.
ps. that one track that plays on the level back on board the marathon after you've spent the last three on the pfhor ship always gives me chills to this day

The Aleph One devs are geniuses.
I was surprised that this game didn't have some exit door, like doom, and I actually had to pay attention to the story.
Marathon is interesting, but it had some annoying stair puzzles. I thought Marathon 2 was slightly better, but Marathon infinity had a level that was so bad I quit.

I assume that level in Infinity was Acme Station? It's a pretty widely derided level. It was a complete brick wall for me, and it's why I never made a followup episode to video. I just didn't have the patience to manage oxygen in a confusing, artificially difficult corridor maze of a level.

4:14 I mean, no. Wolfenstein 3D and Doom both had strafing. They just weren't setup as the default controls.

At this point, I am aware of this. I simply worded my point poorly. I meant to say that Marathon was the first to have strafing set up by default.

After rewatching this video I got to say it's pretty good. If you were willing to do videos on the sequels I would absolutely watch them. The only thing I will say is that I don't agree with you on Doom's level design. I'm replaying Doom one right now and I got to say I don't hate the level design outside of "knee deep in the dead" at all. I mean, yeah it can get a bit of annoying at times (especially in episode 3). But I wouldn't call it "bad" by any means. But anyway, that's just my opinion. Anyway, great video. I look forward to seeing more from you

Unlike most other people who like boomer shooters, I don't care for the original Doom. Not even purely in terms of level design, but level design is definitely one of my biggest issues. E3 and E4 in particular showcase how torturous it can be to play. I'll concede and say E2 has some moments, though. On the other hand, Doom 2 is overwhelmingly awful. Completely unstomachable.
Speaking of sequels, I was making a Marathon 2 video, but I ended up ditching it. Funny you bring it up, since my upcoming Dusk video will have a joking callback to the scrapping of my Marathon 2 video.

@@marriedtomychair so I deleted my old reply. Mainly because it turned out I misread your reply. I thought you said that you didn't like older shooters like Doom. Not that you did like older shooters just not doom in particular. My bad. And since that destroyed at least a third of my points, I decided to write this new reply. It really just comes down to my opinions on Doom. Episode 2 was fine. Episode 3 is mostly passable. I mean it has some pretty bad levels. But I find most of the other levels are only mild annoyances. And replaying it certainly helps, especially with the penultimate level. I do agree with you that episode 4 is not great. I was able to beat it, but that was on the hey not too rough difficulty. On ultra violence it's just atrocious. Especially level one. That was just awful. I think I have been able to beat it on ultra violence but that was because I was save scumming. And level two I wasn't able to beat at all. Interestingly enough on the hey, not too rough difficulty. I actually like level two. But on ultra violence it's just awful. One day I'll try to beat episode for an ultra violence. But that's not anytime soon. And as for doom 2 I enjoyed it. Just as much I did the original Doom. And yeah there are some not so great levels. But again, most of the levels flaws I find to be mildly annoying more than anything else. But that's just my opinion. I'm not trying to say you're wrong or anything. I'm just saying those are MY opinions on Doom one and two. Anyway, the last thing I wanted to say is that I think we should all stop using the term "boomer" shooter. Mainly because they were made by Gen. X mainly for Gen. X. And this is not to try to shame you for using the term. I'm just saying that I'm not a fan of it for a lot of reasons. But those are just my thoughts. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. What's your response?

@@RobbieJennings-cd6cp "Boomer shooter" is a widely accepted name for the subgenre. It's even the term used to describe it on Wikipedia (look at the page on Dusk, for instance). I view it as a mocking nickname that ended up being adopted by fans.
If nothing else, at least "boomer shooter" gives you a better idea of what the subgenre is than "immersive sim". People aren't especially great at naming subgenres, evidently.

      @RobbieJennings-cd6cp Před 10 měsíci

@@marriedtomychair you got that right. However I hope people will learn how to name sub-genres better one day. But based on the track record we have, I don't have too much hope. Anyway, have a good day and I'll be looking forward to next video 👍

I think if this game had been more popular the entire genre would’ve been way more advance
