If anything, they created this art style while the others copied. Make sure you know who the devs are first champ, one can't "copy" something they've already been well on track with.

My sadness has peaked seeing this trailer after hearing about the monumental firings at bungie. I am astounded that’s studio could be so short sighted right before a major product launch. Please everyone keep an eye on the old bungie crew and support their endeavors

And there are people still blaming Activision for Destiny 2, even though Activision have zero involvement in that game’s latest content. Seriously, if Bungie are truly the saints of gaming, then why haven’t they removed any of the microtransactions on there? Ask yourselves that.
Every time a company is bought they are expected to make a profit for said company. Sony acquiring them for 3.6 Billion means that in the time frame of their contract, Sony expects them to earn about 7.2 Billion or more. So yes, this game will be rough on microtransactions, but as a trade off is hopefully quality, considering the goal they have.
As someone who played the original during my lunch breaks in high school, I'm happy to see Marathon return. ...I'm also dismayed to see that it's a PvP extraction shooter.
I hope they finally implement tug of war. There could be a day where you really do interact alongside ai and the DS while enjoying fighting over something that causes you so much. Edit.. I had to put a period on the end of so much.

OG Marathon's story being told exclusively through disjointed terminals fits extraction shooter very well. Especially since this isn't in MR-54's story, but alongside it. I think they'll do a good job with this one for sure.
Love that they included a song by Justice/SebastiAn - two phenomenal electronic artists in my opinion and whose music I've really enjoyed over the past decade. They are licensed under Ed Banger records and all of the artists under that record label have some serious talent ❤

I hope the original storyline remains untouched. The Marathon trilogy has probably one of the best plots in the history of video games. Durandal is still one of my favorite fictional characters ever made.
Apparently the plot is about a UESC mission to find out what happened to the UESC Marathon, so the events of the game probably won't be that connected to the original trilogy. That Spht compiler does make me wonder about that though.

I can't explain it, but I think I really liked the blend of synthetic/natural aesthetics in this trailer, in addition to it being very colorful with strong colors. There's something about this game that's making me excited. It even makes me want to start drawing some sci-fi/dystopian futuristic things again. I already know that this trailer will be the run of my matches in this game. Grab as much loot as you can, rush to extraction with a few seconds left, and die to a camper.
It's the same reason manufacturers try to make their packages colorful. It gets your attention. I want to be excited too because this is very visually appealing, but knowing modern Bungie, I'll wait to see if they start announcing $40 expiring DLC every 3 months before I get excited.
Seems cool for a modern art piece and a nice visual teaser, can't say it exactly made me excited for the gameplay.. An extraction shooter is very risky, and they have taken some huge steps with this game like firing a huge chunk of its team to focus development on this project.. Somthin about that music starting gives me chills everytime. As much as bungie has been on the decline recently, their art team and music team never fail to bring awesome things to the table.
In Destiny 2 the art design has gotten worse and worse for items and skins, but some of the map environments have been really great, they kind of messed up with Neptune though.
I remember playing the original Marathon on Macs years ago. It was the first shooter I remember that incorporated different aim & shoot axis (vs being locked to movement). Glad to see they keep pushing the genre.
I played Marathon 2 Multiplayer via 14.4k modem with a friend from the US. I was in Europa. The lag was epic! Having said that and having dwelled in nostalgia, I think this game here has absolutely nothing to do with the original Marathon, where you arrive on the USNC Marathon to be greeted by weird Pfhor aliens and are accompanied by a benevolent AI (Leela) that gets killed by another crazy AI (Durandal).
Very excited for this. The leads here lead the charge during the best eras of Destiny's PvP. I hope narrative isn't totally lost, Marathon has a rich well of lore to draw from. Would be a shame to let it go to waste.
Its a pvp extraction shooter unfortunately... There might be little bits of lore but I suspect its just wearing the skin of marathon with little actual substance from the name sake.
@@aceo3773 I dunno about that - an IP doesn't have to be the same thing forever. In fact, as lofty as their ambitions are for the revival of the IP, it's probably gonna go better than if they just made Marathon 4 in the style of Marathon Infinity - even Doom needed massive changes to the status quo in order to be as successful as the original games. But, nothing's certain until it releases. I'll stay mildly optimistic.
they confirmed on a PS blog that they're very excited for how the lore from the old games ties into this game, which leaves me hopeful they're working on a good balance for newcomers and legacy players.
@@FyreBlastkin while I agree that Doom had massive changes but Doom's revival, at the end of the day, was STILL a single player, first person arena shooter. The CORE of doom is the same. This is not at all the same comparison imo. Not saying they can't pivot, but this is much less a revival and more a spin off. Spin offs could work but this is more equivalent of like Halo wars. It's still Halo but it's not like CE, 2 or 3... Y'know the games that made Halo, Halo... Also, I'm expecting the lore to be on the same level as old D1... Everything interesting is in a damn grimoire. It's much less in front of you like Halo (even old Marathon) and just background. Get lore in item descriptions, which is one of my least favorite ways to tell a story. And by no means am I saying the game will be bad. It could be the best PvP extraction shooter. BUT as someone who would love a new Marathon, that is like the Marathons we had before, this is not it. And I think anyone who wants a Marathon 4 (or even a reboot to the series) want it to be like Marathon... Not Tarkov with Marathon's skin.

I'm not gonna lie, I cannot stop watching this trailer over and over. The colors, the aesthetic, the music, camera angles... everything is just beyond incredible. Everyone who's participated in a creation of this piece of art please be very proud of yourselves, remember that you're an immensely talented person. Can't stop dreaming of working in a company such as Bungie. Always amazed by their art design. Super excited to see more and to play it, also really glad it's gonna be an 'extraction shooter'.
Bungie doesn't miss with their art design and trailers tbh. I know a lot of people are disappointed that it's not a singleplayer or story first game but I'm very interested to see what Bungie can do when they specifically focus on a PvP experience, and I think an extraction shooter is probably one of the best ways they can do that outside of an arena FPS like Halo. Bungie gameplay/feel is also usually very good so I'm looking forward to it at least feeling good to play.
Played Marathon on my Apple Macintosh LC475 in 1994. It was one of the most memorable and atmospheric shooters I’ve played to this day. If this comes close to the original it will be a huge success. It informed and inspired so many great games including Halo and Half Life.

This game will beat little if any resemblance to the game you played, as do the development teams. Many people I'm sure would have preferred this be a reboot of that classic story. But no, Bungie like money and pissed off players.

The vast majority of the original Marathon fanbase are up in arms about the fact that this is a PvP only game without a single player campaign, and I do see where they are coming from, but we haven’t even seen a shred of gameplay yet. I don’t think it’s fair to make a judgment about this game yet one way or another, but I am very excited to see what Bungie has in mind for this game!

What I like about the game (except astonishing art, of course). Is the idea of a "runner", like a cyborg you can transfer your consciousness to while playing, it makes it so immersive!

God, the stylistic direction is straight fire. I'm not into extraction shooters but damn I'd 100% buy the artbook for this. The extreme colors, uncanny valley androids, boxy 3d printed guns, combat spacesuits, this is my sci-fi jam right here
Absolutely agree. This feels like someone took the best parts of Ghost in the Shell, Cyberpunk and Blade Runner and then threw in into an Alice in Wonderland mixer. Absolutely love it. By the way, in the Vidoc about the game, they call the art style "graphic realism", but it's a bit of an umbrella term honestly. The way I see it, if this game has sucess, I can see it becoming the term for its art style itself, so just like these days we call certain games "Metroivania", in the future we might say "That game has that marathonian sci-fi style" or something like that." It's seems instantly recognizable, like with Jet Set Radio back in the days. You see a single pixel and know straight away where it's from.
Agreed the pristine new tech will contrast very well with the older equipment of the colony and Marathon ship. And the bizzare pfhor tech will also contrast every well with all of them.
If nothing else, this game is going to feel incredible to play. Few things come close to how good Halo and Destiny's gameplay is. Add in the stunning art direction and lore of the beloved Marathon universe, and I could see them revolutionizing the genre with this one.
Looks amazing, but really sad that it's not focused on a single player campaign. What made Marathon great was the rich backstory and world they created.

@@aceo3773 I dunno about that - an IP doesn't have to be the same thing forever. In fact, as lofty as their ambitions are for the revival of the IP, it's probably gonna go better than if they just made Marathon 4 in the style of Marathon Infinity - even Doom needed massive changes to the status quo in order to be as successful as the original games. But, nothing's certain until it releases. I'll stay mildly optimistic.
they confirmed on a PS blog that they're very excited for how the lore from the old games ties into this game, which leaves me hopeful they're working on a good balance for newcomers and legacy players.
@@FyreBlastkin while I agree that Doom had massive changes but Doom's revival, at the end of the day, was STILL a single player, first person arena shooter. The CORE of doom is the same. This is not at all the same comparison imo. Not saying they can't pivot, but this is much less a revival and more a spin off. Spin offs could work but this is more equivalent of like Halo wars. It's still Halo but it's not like CE, 2 or 3... Y'know the games that made Halo, Halo...
Also, I'm expecting the lore to be on the same level as old D1... Everything interesting is in a damn grimoire. It's much less in front of you like Halo (even old Marathon) and just background. Get lore in item descriptions, which is one of my least favorite ways to tell a story.
And by no means am I saying the game will be bad. It could be the best PvP extraction shooter. BUT as someone who would love a new Marathon, that is like the Marathons we had before, this is not it. And I think anyone who wants a Marathon 4 (or even a reboot to the series) want it to be like Marathon... Not Tarkov with Marathon's skin.

I didn't notice before but the final shot of the Marathon over the planet forms the game logo, that's a cool detail.
Music is AWESOME. And I adore the moon with the spire in it in front of the planet makes out the Marathon symbol. Very well put together.

It's a PvP extraction shooter, so i doubt it. It's not gonna be anything like the original Marathon aside from both being FPS games.
I'm so hyped about them possibly slowly unraveling the secret arg-like lore of the Bungie multiverse and maybe even connecting the end of Destiny's saga to this game.

First time I saw and played the original Marathon was on a Mac, it was awesome, it had seemingly endless levels!

I'm not gonna lie, I cannot stop watching this trailer over and over. The colors, the aesthetic, the music, camera angles... everything is just beyond incredible. Everyone who's participated in a creation of this piece of art please be very proud of yourselves, remember that you're an immensely talented person.
Can't stop dreaming of working in a company such as Bungie. Always amazed by their art design. Super excited to see more and to play it, also really glad it's gonna be an 'extraction shooter'.
Bungie doesn't miss with their art design and trailers tbh. I know a lot of people are disappointed that it's not a singleplayer or story first game but I'm very interested to see what Bungie can do when they specifically focus on a PvP experience, and I think an extraction shooter is probably one of the best ways they can do that outside of an arena FPS like Halo. Bungie gameplay/feel is also usually very good so I'm looking forward to it at least feeling good to play.

A freaking Tarkov mod.
Played Marathon on my Apple Macintosh LC475 in 1994. It was one of the most memorable and atmospheric shooters I’ve played to this day. If this comes close to the original it will be a huge success. It informed and inspired so many great games including Halo and Half Life.

@docstranger9520 it's multiplayer only and it's a tarkov style extraction shooter where you get gear outfit your character and load into a map with a bunch of other people then kill each other and take eachothers stuff when you win a fire fight. Then you try and leave with your Ill gotten gains

I remember playing Marathon 2 as 5 year old kid (hell of an experience) and after almost 20 years this comes up on my main page. Can't wait to see what will it be! This title brings so many good memories :D
This game will beat little if any resemblance to the game you played, as do the development teams. Many people I'm sure would have preferred this be a reboot of that classic story. But no, Bungie like money and pissed off players.

The vast majority of the original Marathon fanbase are up in arms about the fact that this is a PvP only game without a single player campaign, and I do see where they are coming from, but we haven’t even seen a shred of gameplay yet. I don’t think it’s fair to make a judgment about this game yet one way or another, but I am very excited to see what Bungie has in mind for this game!

Absolutely agree. This feels like someone took the best parts of Ghost in the Shell, Cyberpunk and Blade Runner and then threw in into an Alice in Wonderland mixer. Absolutely love it. By the way, in the Vidoc about the game, they call the art style "graphic realism", but it's a bit of an umbrella term honestly. The way I see it, if this game has sucess, I can see it becoming the term for its art style itself, so just like these days we call certain games "Metroivania", in the future we might say "That game has that marathonian sci-fi style" or something like that." It's seems instantly recognizable, like with Jet Set Radio back in the days. You see a single pixel and know straight away where it's from.
The art direction for this trailer is insanely cool, visual and audio
Agreed the pristine new tech will contrast very well with the older equipment of the colony and Marathon ship. And the bizzare pfhor tech will also contrast every well with all of them.

If nothing else, this game is going to feel incredible to play. Few things come close to how good Halo and Destiny's gameplay is. Add in the stunning art direction and lore of the beloved Marathon universe, and I could see them revolutionizing the genre with this one.
