Paul Washer's Gospel of Contradictions - Bob Wilkin

  • Bob Wilkin of the Grace Evangelical Society examines the apparent contradictions and inconsistencies of the Calvinist Paul Washer's Gospel. Bob demonstrates how Paul Washer and Calvinism is inconsistent in preaching that salvation is by faith alone in Christ alone, but then Washer turns around and says that one needs to continue repenting and believing and one needs to grow in holiness to prove their salvation. Paul Washer is inconsistent and contradicts himself by saying that the unregenerate cannot seek God and that God needs to do this for the unregenerate, but then goes on to call people to seek and cry out to God.

Where does Jesus say it will be easy to follow Him?
Jesus said to pick up your cross daily and follow Him.
      Luke 9:23-26
Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
      Luke 14:27-35,62
And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? 29For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you30saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
31“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. 33In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples

How does scripture say we get the gift.
      Repent and believe.
      Acts 20:21
I (Paul) have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they MUST TURN TO GOD IN REPENTANCE and HAVE FAITH (believe) in our Lord Jesus.
      Repent and believe.
Contrary to what some teachers are now teaching repentance isn't a work any more than believing is.
      Romans 4:4-5,16
Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness.:16 THAT IS WHY IT DEPENDS ON FAITH, IN ORDER THAT THE PROMISE MAY REST ON GRACE AND BE GUARANTEED TO ALL HIS OFFSPRING -NOT ONLY TO THE ADHERENT OF THE
LAW 👉BUT ALSO TO THE ONE WHO SHARES THE FAITH of Abraham, who is the father of us all"
      Abraham was justified by
his 👉works, (but not works alone) but because he believed with faith he did the works that God required.👈
      James 2:21-24
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; 23and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”-and he was called a friend of God. 24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Without works Abraham's faith would have been meaningless. Repentance and faith are two sides of the same coin. You cannot have faith without repentance and you won't repent without faith.
Without both the coin would have no value.
To say you believe without repentance is like saying you only need your right leg to walk rather than both.
In Romans 4:5 his repentance/ Faith are counted for righteousness.
We are saved by grace through repentance which is the consequence of faith.
Paul does not contradict what he says in Acts about repenting of sin in Romans 4:4-5
Scripture must be kept in context.

    • @utoobtraveller
      @utoobtraveller Před 3 dny

The Bible is full of mysteries that, from the stand point of human rationalism, appear like contradictions-- 3 Persons who are 1 God, the God-man possessing 2 natures though He is one person, and man's total inability to obey God from the heart yet his complete responsibility to do so.
Washer is not a hyper-Calvinist but a biblical Calvinist who holds to a series of biblical paradoxes some regard as contradictions. He believes in God's sovereignty in salvation, man's innate deadness in sin and inability to believe without the work of the Spirit, but he also believe that all are responsible to believe, should be commanded to believe and be encouraged to believe through the announcement of God's promise that whosoever believes will be saved. Some who do not understand his theology paint him as if he were a hyper-Calvinist, and he is not. In fact, hyper-calvinists hate his preaching as they hated the preaching of Spurgeon, because of the full and free invitation he gave to sinners to look to Christ for salvation.

It sounds like you're just really confused about what Paul is saying. Only God can change a person so only the person that responds to Paul's pleading is someone who responds to God. Paul doesn't speak from his own wisdom but from God's word. The only one who asks for repentance is someone who has already been affected by God's Spirit. Paul is the instrument that God uses to reach His sheep. Also he doesn't put any qualifications on going to heaven except for grace through faith. It's just that God is so powerful that through the life of a believer they will do work. There has never been any true believer has has never done good works, not that it saves them, but it is the outcome of saving faith.
I hope that clarifies. He's not being (or trying) to be contradictory but he is pleading that they repent (but first that God grants them repentance).

Your heart would not be moved to call out for God’s grace unless he had first called you. We work out our salvation, because Christ completed the work of justification and the Holy Spirit is completing the work of sanctification. We do good works, because God has prepared them beforehand that we would walk in them. ALL by Grace (God doing) THROUGH faith (us doing, as faith without works is dead). If you fall short of the test repent and believe.
Cry out to God for mercy until a work is done
To test yourself to see if you're a real Christian read 1John.
1John 3:3-10 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
4Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
      1 John 1:5-7
This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all 6If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
What does it mean to walk in darkness? A style of life.If we say we are a Christian and our lifestyle contradicts everything God has told us about Himself and His will we are a liar.
If our lifestyle contradicts God's character then claiming to be a Christian is a lie. Not talking about unscriptual sinless perfection. Even a very mature Christian is susceptible to sin. Someone that has truly been born again will be sensitive to sin and they will be led to repentance and confession to that sin.
      1 John 1:8-10
IF we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 IF we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 IF we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
When was the last time you were broken over a sin? If you are sensitive to sin it will lead you to confession.

Paul Washer is preaching James 1:18-25...which points out to 'be ye doers of the word ('of truth'), and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves'. Notice first verse 21. True faith will 'lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive in meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls'. Notice again: 'be ye doers of the word'...'not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work' (Ja.1:25, Jn.6:29). Believing on Christ 'is the work of God' in one's heart. Salvation consists of 'belief of the truth AND sanctification of the Spirit' (2Thes.2:13). This video deserves a "thumbs down" for dividing what God 'hath joined together' in Truth.
James is using Numbers 9:6-14 as an example. In these verses 'dead body' is the Hebrew word for 'soul'. James 2:26 points this out: 'For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also'. Think about that...and then read Ja.3:13.

He does not persevere *in order to be saved* but rather he perseveres *because* he is truly a child of God. there is no guarantee that a believer will persevere to the end of their life in fatih or works. The Bible specifically says that if we believe not, he abideth faithful. He cannot deny himself. POTS means that nobody can be sure they are saved , you have to "hope for the best" that you get in. The Bible says we can know for sure right now. When you’ve truly come under grace, the new birth.. not only do you have complete forgiveness of every sin.. but when you come in to Grace, sin will not rule over you anymore.. because your not under the old covenant law.. but your under the new covenant..
One way you can find out is.. I’ll present this one verse to you, and you give me the answer.. pay attention to this,
    Romans 6:14 (KJV)
14 For sin shall not have dominion [rule] over you: for [because] ye are not under the law, but under grace.
    So, two questions…
    1. what is the evidence, proof that you’re under Grace?
    - Sin does not rule over me… Correct!
    2. Next question, what is the evidence or proof that you’re still under the law?
    - Sin rules over me! Absolutely right..
law is old covenant… what is the proof that a lot of people reading this or hearing this are under the old covenant? Sin rules over you… Sin rules over you.
We’re not talking about sinless perfection… (1 John 1:8) nobody is sinless perfect… Christ alone is… there’s a difference, between falling hundred times a day, walking in sin… and making a mistake.. messing up… and being grieved in chastised as it says in Hebrews, being brought back to the narrow path…
Beloved, Being redeemed makes you zealous of good works… in other words, you have a burning passion of fire that says, I wanna serve you, I want to obey you, I want to do good works, Oh Lord, I want to serve you… That’s the mark of the New Birth, not only absolute complete forgiveness of every sin no matter how dark. But, Redemption from a disobedient lifestyle.. Redemption from your old cultural lifestyle… sin does not rule you…
So, when sin rules over you beloved, you are under the old covenant, you are under law… you have not understood grace at all…

Lot, King Saul, King Solomon, Demas, and the Corinthians were all born again, yet they gave no evidence of it in their lives. 1 Kings 11:4 even states, " For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father." There is no record in Scripture of Solomon repenting of his idolatry before he died. The same is true of many in the Corinthian Church.
Believers who persist in sin will certainly be disciplined by God (Heb. 12:8). They may even be chastened to the point of physical death. Moreover, they will also forfeit eternal rewards when they stand to give an account of their lives at the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Cor. 5:10). However, since the believer in Jesus Christ has already passed from death unto life and currently possesses eternal life (John 5:24), there is no possible way for them to end up in hell
It is only those who believe in Jesus Christ that receive everlasting life, not those who "behave" in Him. Besides, if keeping commandments or serving Christ had anything to do with where we spend eternity, we would all be doomed. James 2:10 says, "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

A tree is known by it's fruit. Loving one's own sinful life to the degree that one embraces a teaching where they get to keep their sinful life tells me all I need to know about that person's heart. Unregenerate. They exchange the truth for a lie. They love their lives to the death.

The truth is we are saved by grace through faith, and that such a salvation is always visible. No fruit, no root.

The major theme of the entire Bible is God calling on a fallen sinfulled man to humble himself and acknowledge he is a hopeless sinner in need of a Savior.
Repentance means that you realize that you are a guilty vile sinner in the presence of God,that you deserve the wrath and punishment of God. That you are hell bound. It means that you begin to realize that this thing called sin is in you and that you long to get rid of it,and that you turn your back on it in every shape and form you renounce the world, whatever the cost, the world in its mind and outlook as well as its practices and you deny yourself and take up your cross and go after Christ. Your nearest and dearest and the whole world may call you a fool or say you have religious mania. You may have to suffer financially, but it makes no difference. That is repentance. It becomes an ongoing way of life. The repentance that starts at salvation starts a progressive lifelong process of confessing sin. 1 John 1:9 we go on confessing our sin. The active continuous attitude of repentance produces the poverty of the spirit, the mourning, the meekness that characterizes true believers in the Beatitudes of Matthew 5. Repentance produces a new way of life, not just a different opinion of Christ,a new way of life. Those who heard Jesus preach knew what He was calling for. He wasn't asking them just to change their opinion about Him. They knew what Isaiah said when Isaiah preached. This is what Isaiah 1:16 says:wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight, stop doing wrong.17 Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.18 "Come now, let us settle the matter", says the Lord."Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. If you wash yourselves,if you make yourselves clean the progression begins internally and then manifests itself in attitudes and actions. Isaiah 55:6-7
Seek the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon him while He is near: 7 Let the wicked forsake his way,and the unrighteous man his thought:and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy on him;and to our God,for He will abundantly pardon. He'll pardon when the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man forsakes his thoughts and turns to the Lord. 2 Chronicles 7:14 IF my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS then I will hear from heaven and FORGIVE THEIR SINS and heal their land.
We absolutely must repent and believe.
A claim of belief alone will not save.

Personally, I disagree on the first point and would say that you misunderstand what faith is truly along with most of the church.
To explain hopefully briefly, we automatically live out what we truly believe. If you say that a lifeboat will save you if your ship is sinking, but then refuse out of fear to get in one when your ship is sinking, I'm going to say that you don't really believe that lifeboats save. This is the difference between saving faith and dead faith that can't save anyone as James refers to it. Hebrews 11 clearly lays out faith (trusting God's words) as something that causes action. By trusting, people suffered, endured, overthrew armies, offered sacrifices, and even died. By trusting, Peter walked on water having trusted first without feeling "firm" water first, no proof. His miraculous sign would never have happened if he didn't believe without doubting. In fact, the second he focused on the waves, his miracle went away because his faith went away. This is what true faith is. We as a church better start believing the God who cannot lie and is trustworthy.
On the second, I do not agree in the total depravity of man, but that no one is righteous on their own and all have fallen short of the goal.

    • @stickmanbarr
      @stickmanbarr Před 10 měsíci

If works and sanctification were automation, then Paul wouldn't have written about 50% of his letters. He constantly admonished believers to "walk worthy" to "put off the old man" to "cease from sin." Why would he have needed to write those exhortations if sanctification was so automatic? It's not automatic. There is "conversion" and then there is "discipleship." Washer confuses these two things and in essence starts adding works as a condition for conversion.

    • @danielbu2611
      @danielbu2611 Před 10 měsíci

@@stickmanbarr I didn't say that sanctification is instant. I was explaining faith which is something we grow in. As we learn to trust more, how we react to the world changes naturally. The point of action is the "test" of faith's quality. Words are cheap. We find out what we truly believe when we act and sometimes it requires a sacrifice.
Peter walking on the water is a really good example. He believed that if Jesus said it, it would happen. His faith was in Jesus' character and power and the reliability of his word. That's why he said, "If it is you, tell me to come to you on the water." He had to have faith like a child; simple, not laboriously mental in human understanding
(because walking on water does not make sense). If Jesus says it, then it's 100% firm. Then his faith caused him to act. He stepped out on the water and THEN his miracle appeared. He was fine until he started looking at the waves and wavered OUT of faith back into human understanding and that's when his miracle went away. If he didn't really trust Jesus' words, he never would have stepped onto the water, would he?
This is what we need to do with ALL of Jesus' words: read them and ask ourselves, "do I REALLY believe him and does my life show it"? This is what it means when the Bible says salvation is for those who have put their faith in Jesus. Not that we just mentally agree that Jesus died for us and that his blood covers our sin. That is not faith.
This way of understanding faith explains how when Jesus says, "those who believe my words AND OBEY THEM have eternal life". It's not saying works save us, it's saying genuine faith acts and that kind of faith will save us, the same way Abraham's faith acted and every faithful person in Hebrews 11 acted as well as throughout the Bible acted on their trust in God.
Real, genuine faith is proven to be genuine saving faith when it acts. If it doesn't act, it's not saving faith. So you see, salvation is by faith (nowhere does the Bible say faith alone in this context), but only saving faith, not dead faith that doesn't act.
      Is that more clear?

At 3:01, you said: *"you must experience holiness in this life in order to get into the coming kingdom."*
Sir, this isn't a contradiction, nor is it even a Calvinistic understanding, but a Biblical one. Even Adrian Rogers, who was no friend of Calvinism, said "If your faith hasn't changed you, then it hasn't saved you." This is, after all, was the point that James was making when he said that "faith without works is dead." You are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith that IS alone. Works always accompany faith as an attestation to its genuineness.

Not only must we confess sin,(1 John 1:9) but we must forsake it. Run away from it. One old definition of repentance is to leave the sin I've done before and show I've earnestly grieved by doing it no more.
If a man is genuinely born again, all old things are passed away, all things have become new( 2 Corinthians 5:17)
Too many today are preaching a perverted gospel to make it as palatable as possible. They give them a shot of love and grace without any warning of a looming judgment of hell for any who think because of grace they can continue living no different than before.
Those who believe that a change of conduct [Repenting of sin] is works are making our Lord's death on the cross meaningless
He didn't die for sins to give a green light to live like a demon.
A rebirth in Jesus means a new heart, a new mind, a new spirit, a new person

@@2Chronicles714_ what you call a perverted gospell is ' lordship salvation' no where does scripture say ' repent of sins( stop sinning) before you can trust in Jesus for salvation. Jesus did not say to the criminal on the cross, ' have you repented of this or that, are you sorry for this or sorry for that' no once the criminal on the cross acknowledged he was a sinner and that he needed a Saviour he called on Jesus and Jesus IMMEDIATELY accepted him. Your clearly talking about false gospell to put wrong conditions on people before they can come to Christ for salvation, the same false gospell that Washer, Comfort and Macarthur teach. I strongly believe EVERY believer should aim to turn away from sin and aim to live like Jesus- Romans 6v11 , Ephesians 5v1. But the point I'm making is that only one can do that if they have been born again, not before. Salvation is through faith in Jesus alone and not by how good you are at turning from sin, amd a believer no matter how much sin they have a struggle with can have perfect assurance of salvation - 1John 5v10-13 '... these things I write to you who BELIEVE in the name of the Son of God that you may KNOW that you have eternal life.' Romans 4v5 ' Now to him who worketh NOT but BEILIEVETH in him who justifies the ungodly, his FATH is counted for righteousness.' We all grow at different paces and it is not for us to judge if someone is saved or not by how much progress they are making or by how much they have changed. Trusting in Christ and his redemptive work on the cross alone makes one a christian. Yes the cross frees us from the power of sin so we can live in victory (as every believer should strive to do) Romans 6v1-11 but it also frees us from the penalty of our sins- Hebrews 10v14, Romans 5v9. And those who have simply believed the gospell/ trusted in Jesus and his work on the cross alone are guaranteed these benefits. 1 John 3v4 ' sin is transgression of the law. ' So to say that turning from sin is required to go to heaven your really saying follow the law to be saved. Turning from sin is therefore works, common sense should also tell you that turning from sin definitely requires work, and finally again for the millionth time we are not saved by works- Ephesians 2v8-9 and therefore not saved by keeping the law/turning from sin - Galatians 2v16

Agree. It’s based on works, not grace. Original Calvinism stressed salvation by faith and expected sanctification to follow without worrying about it being sufficient enough for salvation as the initial act of faith was the essential element of being saved. It was probably quite similar to today’s free grace teaching in terms of how we’re saved.

Bob, you are right. But I still think there's nothing wrong with the 5 points of CALVINISM. I find no wrong because that's the Gospel. That's because I was saved before I knew what CALVINISM is about. Till our last breath, our flesh cannot serve God. That's why we are under that GRACE. If our flesh would leave us, our soul which is already SANCTIFIED with JESUS' blood (Hebrews 10:10), won't need GRACE anymore. To me, Grace is grace because there is an opposition our sinful flesh. Despite wearing flesh, since Grace is given to us, we can say with all BOLDESS, that we are REDEEMED, we are MADE RIGHTEOUS; not for one day, two days..but for ETERNITY...having obtained ETERNAL REDEMPTION...TO BE ABLE TO SAY WE ARE ETERNALLY RIGHTEOUS is powered by FAITH that came to us from God's Holy Spirit.Yes, to be able to take rest in the FINISHED work of Christ is Grace.. to be able to have the FAITH & to have the courage to confess that we have been made HOLY AND RIGHTEOUS is sure GRACE. ~~a brother from North East India 🇮🇳.

Sir, you need to do more reasearch.
Faith is a gift that God gives by grace as a means for Justification, God declaring the sinner Just before making the sinner actually righteous.
Sanctification is a process that God does in the justified sinner (now saint) by grace to make/conform him/her to be actually righteous.
    Philippians 1:6
"For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus."
    Ephesians 4:13
until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.
To get in to heaven is a reward that requires perfect obedience to God's word. "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all." -James 2:10. no man is guiltless, not even one.
The wages of sin is death (object of God's wrath) , we are dead in our trespasses and sin. We were conceived with an inherited sin nature via ordinary generation.
But God according to His great mercy, in the Person and Work of God the Son (Christ), bore the punishment of the sins of His people( the elect) so that they might be guiltless , which only makes them innocent but not righteous. So He also lived the full course of Human life from conception to maturity fully obedient to God and His Word thus winning the reward of eternal life (entry in to heaven/holy of holies) and He also by grace imputes His righteousness to His people , so that they might take part in the reward of eternal life.
Eternal life is to know God and His Son the Christ. If you know the Son you know God. In the Son all the fullness of deity dwells in Him.
No one knows the Father except the Son, No one can know the Son unless the Father draws him.
Christ is the way the truth and life, no one can come to the Father except through Christ. Unless you are born of the Spirit , you will by no means know God.

Paul is not saying that these things are required to get into heaven. Paul is saying that these things follow your justification. Which is true, the bible covers this idea ad nauseum. It isn't that you MUST do these things, it is that if you are saved, you WILL do these things, to some greater or lesser extent. You WILL be changed. Once you are saved you can surrender more of yourself or less of yourself. You can certainly dig your heels in, but God has an agenda in you, and that agenda is to make you like him.
