      Alright, let's see this. Let's have a handy-dandy quiz!
"Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up for treasure for the last days. Behold, the wages of the labourers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter."

@Schizo Neo Is it the smartphone's fault? A smartphone is only a tool, and everyone uses it, therefore if the evil was in the smartphone itself, everyone should be incapable of formulating thoughts and phrases, but it doesn't seem like society is in that state yet, despite 10+ years since the birth of smartphones. Also, most people you talk about are people that grew up having a smartphone for at most 8 years, but more probably for 6-7, by that time they should've been taught enough to be able to write in a proper manner (That would probably differ from what the sleep deprived me is writing right now), therefore the problem is not in the smartphone, but in the educators that did poor work, be it the teachers or the parents, at socializing and teaching the child in order to make him a functioning thinking adult, or maybe the child wasn't born to use language to think, rather being more able to work on numbers or pictures.
But yeah, keep demonizing a piece of technology that makes your life easier and that you yourself definitely use a couple hours a day instead of actually having to encounter the burden to think about the real causes of a missed proficiency in language that may or may not actually exist, because you in fact took only a small sample in your "time tutoring college students" and you probably are cherry picking the worst ones while forgetting about the fact that the brilliant ones might have not even needed your help to begin with.
Also, before you try to disprove the argument i presented you with by simply attacking the fact that my grammar isn't correct, I'm not an american, i live in Italy, therefore english is my second language

Marxism ultimately boiled down: The one who is unwilling to work shall work or die, no sit-back "reaping what you do not sow" capitalism allowed!"
"I pledge my allegiance, to the flag"... A Christian socialist.

    • @oldnikonian343
      @oldnikonian343 Před 3 lety +43

@@letsomethingshine The workshy won't die if they don't reap what they sowed, i.e. if they don't reap an income from their toil to feed themselves. Out of necessity, they will just start working/sowing and reaping (an income) like everyone else. There's nothing like an empty stomach to focus the mind on what is important.
Note also that the verse says, "unwilling to work," not "can't work due to illness or infirmity" (they should be cared for) or "because there IS no work."
In biblical times when there was no work, people would voluntarily become slaves. It was either that or they and their family would starve. In those cases, slave owners are called upon to treat their slaves well in the bible, i.e. it doesn't condone slavery at all, but where it does exist, slaves should be treated well.
Work is GOOD for people, so in a roundabout way, not feeding the workshy is GOOD for them because it will get them off their backsides and get them to be productive members of society.
      Proverbs 6:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!
Ants are busy, ants are workers, ants get things done, ants don't expect to sit on their bony little asses and wait to be fed, ants are wise. Be like the ant.
The bible teaches us to look after the genuinely sick and the widow elsewhere, so they are not left out of the equation.
A person pledging their allegiance to a national flag is a nationalist. Nationalism (the worship/adoration of the nation state) is idolatrous.
We are called to worship the Creator, not created things, which is idolatry. Idolatry is anathema (condemned) in the bible, besides, Christians are not of this WORLD, let alone of a nation state...
John 15: 18,19 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
We're just passing through, but we are expected to be industrious and to work hard in the process in order to set a good example to others...
2 Thessalonians 3: 7~10 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
In short, there is no such thing as a Christian Socialist, the term is an oxymoron, in this case, delivered by a moron...
      oxymoron
/ˌɒksɪˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction.
      moron
      /ˈmɔːrɒn/ _noun._ a stupid person.
And before you say that's unChristian, Jesus called fools.... fools and we are predestined to be conformed to His likeness...
      Romans 8:29
For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
So if Jesus can call a fool a fool (which is true), then we can also, in fact we should in the hope that they will come to their senses.

If it's me, the bible is clearly opposed to a welfare state and in favour of personal responsibility, whereas a welfare state is one of the things that underpins a Marxist/Socialist country, meaning that the bible is opposed to Marxism/Socialism. It's not rocket science.
If it's the other person, then I agree, he clearly doesn't understand Marxism.
Oh and your comment, "You are misunderstanding Marxism" (without any evidence) is something Marxists say all the time when their ideology is exposed for what it is, i.e. "Ahh, but that isn't Marxism." lmao

oldnikonian I disagree with you when you say Marxism and Christianity are inherently opposing beliefs. I could quote innumerable verses from both Old and New Testament that call upon not individuals, but groups of people to care for the needy. Marxism is a collectivist ideology that believes society should take care of the underprivileged. Marxism isn’t “give free stuff to lazy ppl”. It’s an alternative to capitalism. This idea of democratizing the means of production to make a just society is much more in line with Jesus of Nazareth than the selfish consumerist one we live in today.

@@tyronejones4245 Well, if you have millions of people starving while 1% are overindulging, as a consequence of the exploitation of the 99%, this statement would in essence be true. The law of self preservation states that people will do what they need to do, in order to survive. That certainly does not exclude killing their oppressors. In fact, this is a theme throughout history, regardless of the social order. I personally think that the reason capitalism is being sold so hard to the masses, is because it serves as a catalyst for the preservation of the 1%. So, unless you're rich, you're arguing against your own self interest. Now, things may not be that bad now. However, they will inevitably become dire, once artificial intelligence is ushered in. And let's be honest. Even within this pandemic, we are already seeing elements of socialism injected to support and appease the masses. Otherwise, civil unrest will undoubtedly ensue. So, if we truly take a step back and analyze, from an objective point of view, when the wheels begin to fall off the engine of capitalism, it's socialism that emerges from the wreckage. Ultimately, the dialectic must synthesize a middle ground, or there will be hell to pay for the elite. And while you may disagree with me now, wait until you're hungry, or worse, your kids are hungry.

It's a really, really stupid idea. I believe it is one of the reasons we have so many ....ists and .....isms floating around these days. Unfortunately cultural Marxism has taken hold in many countries and most especially academia. This means many post graduates now working in media or government have unconsciously absorbed Marxist thought and they are constantly looking for victim groups so their Marxist theories make sense. If there is no oppressed group it must mean Marx is wrong and that creates a cognitive dissonance that they find uncomfortable so they go looking for, and find, the oppressed and their oppressors.

I'm going to guess that by "Marxist" she meant "communist" and believed everyone should share everything in common. Which is a pretty solid New Testament idea until you get into the ugly real-life details of how communism in units bigger than immediate families virtually always pans out.
On a side note, I want to add a degree of nuance to the statement at 12:26 that in the Judaeo-Christian tradition there's no group guilt. This is true in the sense that I think he intended it, but not in a broad sense. I think he basically was saying that the race or class of people you were born into doesn't automatically define your standing with God. For example, just because you were born an Ammonite doesn't mean you're inherently guilty of the sins of other Ammonites and can't personally live a godly life; or just because you're wealthy in a time when God is fed up with the shallow and abusive practices of the upper class doesn't mean you can't personally be generous and altruistic and favored in God's sight. Which is totally true.
It's also true though that there are a lot of occasions in the Old Testament where Israel paid dearly for tolerating the sins of the people--even individual people's sins could result in mass plagues etc. There is a sense in the Bible of group responsibility to maintain a culture of faithfulness. The Bible takes place in a collectivistic culture and definitely bears the characteristics of that collectivistic cultural mentality.

John 18:36 "Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence."
The Scriptures make it abundantly clear that there is no perfect society in this world. Utopia belongs to the next life, not to this one. Thus, trying to achieve an earthly utopia is not only delusional, but dangerous, considering how easily utopian ideologies justify violence, repression and mass murder of those deemed to stand in the way of achieving heaven on earth (whether the label applied to them be racists, reactionaries, fascists, counter-revolutionaries, etc.).
EDIT: this isn't a call to inaction when it comes to (genuine) social justice. Obviously we should help those in our community who our struggling, as much as we can, and do our best to make our societies as fair and equitable as possible. But we shouldn't expect to be able to "immanentise the eschaton" through our own efforts.

Richard P “each shall sit under their own fig tree”.
This is the picture the bible paints of the new kingdom under God. It’s funny, because the Christian view of the new world actually sounds Marxist. Almost like Marx was trying to posit a way it would happen naturally without God.
The early church was also much closer to communal living than we are. Selling all that they had and sharing it together. Just something to think about. I am not a Marxist by any stretch, but to say they are “diametrically” opposed is just a blatant lie or a misunderstanding.
      Luke 3:10-11(NIV)
10 “What should we do then?” the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”
      Acts 2:44-46 (NKJV)
44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.
46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
And perhaps the most telling verse of the early Christian lifestyle. Markedly different than the consumerism of todays Western culture.
      Acts 4:32-35 (NIV)
32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.

I wonder how well Jordan knows his own Bible.
Jesus made it clear: by your own efforts, your chance to get into heaven is exactly zero. It can't be done. This is indeed a very depressing realization, and not an 'opiate' at all.
But Jesus also said the only way to get to Heaven is to realize the above, and beg for mercy from God, who will forgive you and grant you eternal life. This is the promise and guarantee of Heaven. It's not based on what we do, it's based on what he did to rescue us from Hell.

Benjamin Brooks there is a few more requirements than begging, but yes, it does require much tears and sorrow fullness for the wrongs you have done in your lifetime.

      More like this.
Marx, discipline is bad and only we know what is good.
Religion, you need a higher power to be good.
Both try to say that humans themselves are bad, but how humans are bad changes.
Basically, both use stollen valor and guilt tripping to control others.
