  • With Sonic Frontiers on the horizon and possibly ushering in a new era of Sonic, I've found no better time to talk about what to this day is my favorite game in the series as well as the man behind it. Through the twist and turns of being overhated to possibly even overloved this is, Sonic Unleashed.

This has always been my favorite Sonic game and it will never be dethroned I feel. Truly felt like a AAA game, and every single element oozed passion and ambition to be more than a simple entry in the franchise. Sadly I don't think the series will ever reach those same heights of ambition.

  • @KOTSOSMC2002
    @KOTSOSMC2002 Před rokem +142

What's constantly impressive to me about Unleashed is the unmatched level design and sense of speed. When you run through Empire City or Spagonia's rooftops or literally any place in the game you feel as you're traversing a huuuge expanse of land and the fact that you do so through locations that feel genuinely alive and like they exist so effortlessly natural to the world is something almost no other Sonic game has accomplished.
The adventure feels grand but also speedy, it feels cartoony but also surprisingly realistic (also thanks to the relatively tight narrative that knows exactly what tone to set and how to present itself and side quests that have a sense of progression with each other).
The levels in Unleashed are so masterfully crafted and the art style is so flawlessly implemented that to this day Unleashed (at least in the day stages) remains the most visually appealing and most modern and satisfying to play.

Honestly I feel like Sonic CAN excel at many things... a story-driven franchise, or a "show, don't tell" narrative... keeping a simple cartoonish vibe, or an intricate anime style... have games revolving intricate exploration and hidden paths, or games built around fast-paced decision making and quick time events... Sonic is just THAT flexible in terms of concept, he's not just a fast character, he's one that can go at ANY pace he desires, and I'm not talking about games...
Truth be told, I feel like the title is too clickbaity, because there's not ONE thing Sonic should be... in all honesty, I believe Sonic can do ANYTHING and be successful with enough effort put into it. 2D-Momentum, 2D-Boost, 3D-Momentum, 3D-Boost... You name it, and you'll find someone who loves it and will defend it to death.

The artstyle, hub worlds, story, locations, level design and so on, it all comes together to create a truly great experience that feels so unique and would go unmatched in later entries. I've always thought Unleashed out of all the boost games was the best mostly because I just like how "Complete" it is with all the things you could do like optional challenges and levels, hub worlds to explore, and I just genuinely think the more snappy reactionary based with more emphasis on trial and error fits the gameplay style more than when they kept trying to add platforming into the later ones (and in forces' case, just not do anything at all).
I really like the Werehog too, at least in the HD version, since i'm pretty big on action games. I tend to agree with the people who say he should've never been there since I don't think you should have to play through a slow paced beat em' up for half the game if you bought the game for the fast paced arcadey platforming.

Does that mean its good? I dont think I need to answer that. Not to say unleahsed is bad aswell, but to say that nostalgia should be kept out of *objective* talks about games, like when discussing story/gameplay/graphics , people shouldnt defend or bash those aspects on whether they those liked or hated them as a kid

This is why I can't get enough of your content, my teen self would've been over the moon to see someone sharing the same views as you did here.
I really wished patreon didn't had an issue with my credit card but sadly this mini wall of tips is all I can give, sorry.
Also my past experiences of this game are from the ps3.
If I can add on what you've said regarding the wherehog polarising (to say the least) portion of the main game, as long as you put xp into strength and use punches (especially the charged technique if you spare xp for techniques) you can breeze through the combat, the damage can get so broken you can even bypass some bosses' cycles, I let you imagine how it feels having a big dark gaia minion fall within 10 sec without doing a qte... Except if you like being stylish or scoring points... Bad habits die hard >.>'
I don't remember too well but I recall skipping some qtes for fights such as the corrupted phoenix boss fight in the past, a fully charged upgraded charge punch technique has weird properties that basically feels like you instantly damage the ennemy's health after the animation, really feels like you're pulling off a sort of discount kenshiro move too, obviously on a pack of ennemies it's... more finicky to pull off but doable, really gottta have your attack angled and positionned properly.
As for the plateforming part uh... Well there's not much work around, outside of already knowing the path, you can quickly jump off from a grabbed edge and such while pressing the jump button during the grab's pulling animation, even does the animation for when you jump from a swing... Gotta stick the chain of grabs and landings though.
    Obviously it's dependent on how much xp you can do with and such, plus it's not like the werehog mandatory parts are "salvageable" but it certainly does help "speeding" the stages up... Also;
Fuck the sun and moon medals, I like exploring but doing these for each playthrough is such a chore with a monke brain like mine.
Thanks for reading and especially for the video.

The Werehog's purpose was probably to be where they put in the precision platforming that they took out of the Boost stages.
Heck, like how Boost Sonic was the fastest Sonic's gameplay has ever been to that point, Werehog Sonic's platforming was the most precise and elaborate it's ever been to that point, with the expanded move list serving double duty as both a decent into (classic) God of War-style action combat and jump-extenders that would make 3D Mario proud, which eventually results in combat getting much flashier and more fun as the game goes on (provided that you didn't go out of your way to play in the most boring way possible like many reviews did), but the platforming gets more forgiving and you can even skip most/all of the most finicky platforming bits (like the various balance beams) or even full out sequence break.

I wish I could explore all those overly detailed backgrounds of Apotos and Spagonia that were clearly prohibitively expensive to make. In an ideal world, instead of having a Werehog with his own dedicated levels they'd make day stages more open, split them into multiple acts and have you play as Sonic at Adventure-level speeds. And then, maybe, when a climactic story moment happens, you temporarily gain boost and blast through the entire location in one go

Also side note, I think these things were done properly between the HD (Ps3/360) version and the SD (PS2/Wii) version:
-HD definitely made use of those graphics. Still has some of the best looking locations I've seen in games
-HD also let us explore towns and talk to people. Plus I do love that sore of "Disney/Pixar" feel they had.
-HD had more overall content in general and the better gameplay overall.
-HD also let you control what you leveled and how you level things. Sometimes you want to skip stuff you know you won't want/need to get to stuff you do want to increase.
-SD definitely paced the stages better. Some did go on for far too long in the HD version (even a few day stages). Plus I KNOW everyone groans at how long Eggmanland HD takes...
-SD had the better system with medals. They were the gateway to a ton of extra content (including lives with basically acts your attempt counter for a stage, in which you get more max attempts per stage by finding one).
-SD let you explore the temples. I really wish that was in the HD one too. (plus the music bit when they found the first temple was used here so you actually could LISTEN to the song)
-SD had the better final boss in terms of gameplay. While HD looked better, but i don't blame someone for hating that 60 button press prompt in HD version.
-And both definitely done well on the boost formula, which still ages pretty well in my opinion. Two different takes on the thing (HD feels better), but still really fun to play. And challenging too. Plus Sonic "feels like Sonic" when blowing through the stage like that.
-I still like the werehog's design in general. Definitely makes Sonic seem more "feral", which was the main point of it. Plus in the stages, it's surprisingly satisfying to slam enemies together or toss them off the edge of the stages or into each other.

My only problems with unleashed is that
1 - Werehog section should have been done by other characters, like tails and knuckle in adventures and 06. If they want to keep the night curse, say that Sonic fall in an unavoidable nightmarish sleep every time the sun go down with no way to awaken him.
2 - It's the start of established characters being reduced doing nothing and not appearing while new characters are introduced to befriend Sonic and solve the plot (here Cheap, then Merlina, the Djin, the Whisps, Eggman himself, Past Sonic and tails, the force OC, etc...)

I'm not going to apologize because I never hated it. I maybe played it around 2015-2018. This was a time before people were so apologetic to it (mainstream). I loved it, and while the Werehog wasn't the highlight I liked it. It wasn't bad for what it was. What it was, was different. People hated that.

I remember seeing the E3 trailer and getting absolute chills (Endless Possibilities still my favorite mainline theme). Also miffed me that moving forward after this Sonic didn't keep Chips ring on him.

This one genuinely is my favorite Sonic game. And opposed how some people experienced it, I actually never really got into it as a kid, even though I was initially excited to try it. It wasn’t until later as an adult I got interested in it again. I started up my PS3, and gave it a second chance, and I honestly fell in love with it, i loved the story, and the gameplay, while it admittedly could be slightly frustrating. And it was honestly one of the only games I actually clapped for when the credits rolled. Truly a wonderful game in my opinion. And while generations has debatably more enjoyable gameplay, I never got quite as attached to it as I did with Unleashed.

    Generations > Unleashed > Colors
The boost games feel very on-rails and restrictive, but somehow Generations made it all work very well. I still can't pinpoint what it did so right. That said, I'd rather have a more free gameplay like the Adventure games and '06, but without the extreme degrees of mega jank.
Hell, why not fuse both styles?

I think Unleashed is overall a good game with tons of charm in a lot of places, but, as someone who values gameplay in a videogame over everything else, I don't necessarily think that it's what mainline Sonic games "should" be. It has a lot of things I can criticize in it's gameplay that make it feel like it's being held back from Sonic's true potential as a 3D platformer that I think extend to the 3D boost formula as it is now in general. That's not to say that I think the boost formula could never be tweaked to work better though. Sonic Rush is one of my favorite Sonic games after all.
I also have some noteworthy gripes with the Werehog gameplay. A lot of them in the enemy variety and platforming departments. I see so many Sonic fans just blame it on GoW-style combat as a whole not being engaging enough to fit Sonic, but that's honestly a huge insult to the actual GoW games.
A game that reaches damn near peak "Sonic-style" gameplay IMO while, similarly to Unleashed, having character action combat is Spark The Electric Jester 3. I seriously hope Sonic team can eventually take notes from it because it has to be one of the best platformers I've played in general.

While I appreciated the boost formula gameplay in Unleashed for capturing Sonic's speed, I feel like it hasn't been able to actually innovate on the formula from there. The level design methods have not substantially changed since Colors, to the point of even recycling the wisps because they can't think of anything else.
The adventure style was slower, but it allowed for a more diverse mix of speed challenges and more complex platforming which led to really interesting, though admittedly sometimes questionable, level design.

I liked Sonic Unleashed since it came out and I was a collage student when I played it.
Only things I hated was the Werehog battle theme playing so much, and the fact that the night stages were honestly too easy. Although I did do a self imposed challenge to play the game without any stat increases aside from combat (only possible on the HD version). That honestly made me appreciate the combos and guarding more cause you REALLY need those with low stats. And that's especially true on the DLC stuff, which made the game quite a bit of a challenge (fighting 3 "big mother" midbosses at once with no stat upgrades was a nightmare though).
In fact, most don't know that you can guard infinitely while in unleashed mode.

I'm surprised you didn't go more into the sloppy, mandatory medal collecting for this game. It's such a stopping point for many at times, besides the day stages and their at times bad zoomed-in camera. I never thought much of unleashed's story either. Nobody really cares that the world just split apart, and while the hub worlds hold up in terms of side stories I genuinely didn't find this game to have a much better story than colors. It feels close in terms of story complexity and intrigue just without the weird humor. It would've been way better off if how the icecream man in apatos applied to **everyone** other than when it's just him possessed by dark gaea at night.

Finally! I've never gotten the hate for this game. The daytime levels have such a sense of speed and the nighttime ones are fun romps. Anyone who grew up playing beat 'em up games like Final Fight, TMNT, Double Dragon, or the like should love them. The game is gorgeous-looking, the music is fantastic, and the story is fine. Another big plus is that it's not buggy like a lot of the more recent Sonic games have been. It always felt like more care went into this game.

This game has the level of quality and detail of a nintendo game. Sonic just seems to be having fun running through the world care-free , smashing through tables and vases and zipping by famous landmarks while enjoying the scenery. It's very inspiring ; even if the world is shattered , he will always remain hopeful and positive , that he will go out of his away to help a stranger regain their memory. Infact he helps literally everyone he meets in the world and travels entire continents just for them. I love the werehog too , it's a great pace breaker from all the high speed action as it can get frustrating after a while. I love the loneliness felt in the stages , it reflects the sadness sonic feels when he's treated as a monster. The music really hits hard in that context , and sonic running around on all fours , climbing buildings , definitely sells me that idea. What a vibe.
However , why hasn't anyone talked about the weird dialogue chips gives when you feed him ? He gives many absurd facts such as chip finding the werehog to be cooler , sonic starts to enjoys his transformation at some point , and confirms that sonic ACTUALLY likes someone ( sonamy ???)... there are many more
