You don't 'focus' on getting assists. That isn't how basketball works. This is coming from a HS Varsity and NCAA D-1 PG. Your TEAMMATES are what allow you to get that many assists. Unless they are doing the right things to get open for high percentage shots (pass, screen, and cut) you aren't getting 10 assists in a game no matter how much you 'look' for them.
Only 9 times in NBA history has a player dished out 1,000 assists for more. Kevin Porter and Isiah Thomas each did it once. The other 7 times were all John Stockton.

Damn, Cousy was on the board for almost 60 years. He only played 68 games per season for all but the last couple years of his career . Playoffs were two rounds to the Finals. The first was best of three and the second best of five. He was basically playing 20% fewer games than modern players and stayed in the top 15 well into the 2010s.
He likely kept playing specifically for that. You can see he was slowing down there. It's a thing baseball players often do too, just stick around a little extra time to crack a certain milestone, then retire. And even though you may find that petty, he actually did play about 80 less games than Mark Jackson, so it's not really that cheesy. So it isn't quite like the Hank Aaron thing where he played almost 800 games more than Babe Ruth and only got 41 more home runs. .285 HR per game for Ruth vs only .233per game for Aaron. But if you check Nash's stats, he played in only 15 games that year. He kinda forced himself to keep playing hurt at the end of the season to get the milestone. They lost all 5 games he played in at the end of the season (they were awful though) and he only cracked 20 minutes in a game once, but he got his milestone. Good for him. Props to Mark Jackson though for being so high on a list with much bigger names. You have to keep looking all the way down to "Andre Miller" for non HOFers below Jackson. So Jackson is the only non HOFer in the top 10. Good memory for his legacy imo for a non HOFer.
I just realized that since there were only 3 main stats the year before blocks and steals and stuff were added Wilt Chamberlain was first for career points first for career rebounds and sixth for career assists the year before steals and blocks were added.
He was also a solid 3 pt shooter and one of the few point guards who would set picks on big men. He absolutely gets no credit for what a great player he was.

I don't think the 4 years he took off would have made up the difference (he would have had to average about 18 assists a game). Anything is possible, but to break it someone's going to have to average 10 assists for 80 games for a 20 year career. In other words, no, it's pretty much impossible. Much easier to break LeBron's record because offense is vastly ahead of defense now and someone could average 30 or more a season for a decade (when James is at 27 a game for his career).

I grew up in Cleveland in the 80s, so we were reminded often through the 80s and 90s how good a player he was every time we tuned into the home broadcast. I think he remains the only man inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame 3 times. Once as a player, once as a coach, and also as a coaching staff member of the Dream Team.
This proves it's not who passes, it who they are passing to. Magic had Kareem and Worthy.. Stockton had Malone..and LeBron has had 20 Olympic teammates.

Doubtful. Before Magic got HIV, he averaged about 826 assists/season, but he would have started to fall off due to age, like all players. Also, Stockton would be ahead of Magic, regardless. Stockton had over 1,000 assists in seven different seasons.

The Denver Nuggets are a perfect example. Joker had two MVP seasons back-to-back but because he just didn't have enough talent with him on the court didn't win a Championship until he got Murray and MPJ back.

I think that will be tough record to break. Most stars are maxing out around 65 games a season 1 and 2 with the money they are making how many are going to want to play 17 to 20 years or good enough to last that long?
And LeBron would be actually very close if he would have played like this since starting of his career, he changed his game like maybe 7-8 years ago. Would have probably break the record. And he will play most likely like 3 seasons till he retires. Will end up 3-4k assists short so he would have break the record probably if he didn't want to be mostly a scoring machine first 10+ years. This like all the records will be broken.

What's really crazy about Stockton's record is that it was harder to get assists counted back then than it is now. That's one thing I don't hear a lot of people talk about. NBA is pretty liberal about what they consider an assist these days.

@@ivorywatts3881 Stockton didn’t “lead the league for a season,”, he set the all time record so high no one will ever break it. Magic was more dynamic, Stockton was more consistent. Magic played with much better teammates, Stockton got the best out of the ones he played with. Both were great.
It's fun to watch, but I prefer assessing stats based on per-game averages. But longevity matters, too.

I think he remains the only man inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame 3 times. Once as a player, once as a coach, and also as a coaching staff member of the Dream Team.

Doubtful. Before Magic got HIV, he averaged about 826 assists/season, but he would have started to fall off due to age, like all players. Also, Stockton would be ahead of Magic, regardless. Stockton was averaging 100-200 more assists per year than Magic the last four years before Magic got HIV. Magic never had at least 1,000 assists in one season. Stockton had over 1,000 assists in seven different seasons.
