Neville is right. It's not entirely Jose Mourinho's fault. The club needed to reset when Ferguson retired and Gill quit. Ferguson's managerial skills were clearly in decline by his retirement; his judgement in picking players to sign was not what it once was. His choice of successor was a curious one: David Moyes was competent at Everton, but not really equipped to take the team to a higher level. United should have questioned the choice and maybe even overruled it.
But United didn't reset. It didn't move on from Ferguson. It went from the out-of-his-depth Moyes to the nutso Louis van Gaal to the walking soap opera Mourinho. Old Trafford has become Coronation Street.

He played fellaini in centre mid actually. His job was to spread the ball about for the forwards. Offered nothing in defense. The agenda against pogba is toxic. Why not play him there? You get the same result in defense but atleast you get better ball distribution. Put pogba and fellaini on. Lump the ball up to fellaini. Instead we saw fellaini doing the lumping. Souness obviously found a way to blame pogba for this.

Well Martial has been better for United than he ever was for Monaco, the stats don't lie. Mata hasn't been worse for United, he's a consistent performer. Falcao showed that he was just not suited for the premier league, he was even worse for Chelsea. Schweinsteiger wasn't great for United, but he wasn't terrible, and he's not exactly setting the world alight in Chicago, in fact he's playing at CB for 50% of his games. Di Maria was a tough one, it's 50/50 for me because he actually ended up not doing too badly but I think he didn't want to be playing Europa league football and not winning titles.
The mistake for me came from appointing Moyes. I believed for a long time that it had to be done, and someone had to be the fall guy, but seeing what Arsenal have done after Wenger left makes me think otherwise. They went balls to the wall and appointed a high profile manager who has won trophies. They might not necessarily win the title this year, but they are playing entertaining football and at least they're competitive.

As for Arsenal, we definitely appointed the safest option, a very well rounded coach who will transition us into the new era of football. I think the only candidate is Pochettino unless Ole does well (hope he does) + I can't stand those yids

Whats gone wrong at United? Just compare the club to the one that beat them today.
We had been a joke, mid-table side for the better part of 7 years after those idiot owners nearly ruined us. We kept bringing in weak managers to steady a ship that was sinking. Hodgson, Rodgers, all mediocre managers that kept recklessly buying with little thought. Our players were sub-standard and everyone could see that.
Klopp has been here 3 years and everyone keeps saying "Mourinho has won 2 trophies and Klopp has won 0". Fine, thats true. But look at the impact on the club as a whole. Over the course of those three seasons Klopp has been weeding out the bad ones and the sub standard players and replacing them with talented players who will run through a brick wall for him. Just look at the difference in players then vs now. Joe Allan replaced by Gini Wijnaldum. Christian Benteke replaced by Sadio Mane. Jordan Ibe replaced by Mo Salah. Mamadou Sakho replaced by Virgil Van Dijk. Lucas Leiva replaced by Fabinho. All of these players are miles better than their predecessors and Klopp, over the course of 3 years and an incredible amount of growing pains, has transformed our mid table squad, to one of the best in Europe. You cant rush success, even Man City took 4 years to get to their first title. Yeah, we haven't won anything but who is in the better position to win things? Proportionately, who has made a bigger impact? Mourinho and his win fast win dirty method is a tired act in the modern game. Unless he is backed to the moon then his way wont work because football clubs are investing so heavily, not only in players, but in facilities, coaches, backroom staff. All less noticeable than players but they are revolutionizing the game behind the scenes. You cant bring in a manager like Mourinho and back him sometimes, and then sometimes not. Its everything or nothing and the heirarch's at United are too hesitant to either pull the plug and also to back him. The problem is bigger than Mourinho, much much bigger, but I dont think we can say he isnt a contributing factor.
As a Liverpool fan believe me I am relishing this, but because our club went through the same thing, it is kind of hard not to show some level of sympathy.

I think the fear as a United fan is that we end up in the wilderness like Liverpool did and United did before that. Liverpool were so dominant in the 70's and 80, during which time it was United that was in the wilderness. Fergie came in and it took him 6 years to build the club back up and once he did, they never looked back. Meanwhile, Liverpool, who had been so dominant, fell away. The great Liverpool side of the 80's was replaced with good but not great teams and good but not great managers. Every now and then they would rise to the occasion, like when they won 5 trophies in a year and of course the famous Champion's League win but the Premier League eluded them.
Both teams have been successful in Europe, Liverpool more so, but I think for both clubs, the league is be all and end all. I may be wrong but I think Liverpool fans, while they'd like to win the Champion's League again, would happily crash out of the competition if it meant winning the Premier League this year. For both United and Liverpool, the league is the mountaintop. United went a long time without winning it until Fergie came in and Liverpool have gone a long time without winning it since the Fergie era began. Liverpool have the chance to put that right under Klopp whereas United look like they could be in for a decade of nothing if something isn't done.

Mourinho wants a new defender. He signed Lindelof, he signed Bailly. And we see him play McTominay or Herrera at times in defense. He's been supported, he wanted a striker - He got Sanchez. He wanted a midfielder - he got matic and Fred. Who of his signings is playing well? Who of the current squad in general is playing well? When we signed Martial, we put clauses in the deal for if he won the ballon dor, now he looks afraid to take a player on. If every manager got a blank cheque, there wouldn't be a "special one". He's a manager that peaked 10 years ago and hasn't changed. From his motivational style, his tactics, his demeanour, and he's been figured out. Time for him to go, and we need to bring someone in who at least empowers these players to go into every game with the mentality of "we are going to score more than you, we want to dominate all facets of the game" rather than "we will concede less than you". If you cant compete with a squad of lukaku who when he signed was a 20 goal a season striker, alexis sanchez one of the best players in the league and in his prime, pogba one of the brightest midfielders in europe and could realistically fit in any system, q complete midfielder, one of the best keepers in the world.
