- Oliver Twixt has been killing it with his ANTM content! And when I saw he was doing a chat with Alisha White of British Invasion Double Elimination fame, I knew I had to get involved!
Here’s my reaction to just some of the highlights contained in this two and half hour Instagram live chat. There’s definitely some revelations, so join me for my reaction and find out if me and Alisha squashed our differences...

Are you kidding me?! My African parents raised me in South London, and I can confirm Alisha's accent doesn't sound African. And why do certain idiots assume we're all obssessed with chicken? Why has Alisha's 'African accent and chicken' story not received the same backlash as Danielle's tooth gap? This is up there with that ANTM contestant who was forced to kiss a racist. Tyra, give Alisha her bloody cheque!

You're right about the situation should have gotten more coverage! I also have an African parent and a British uncle. They sound nothing alike! I wonder about some of the people that this show has on.
Because Dani's comment was made by Tyra Banks and Alisha's was made by a no one.
judging by some of the slang she uses, I'm assuming she's Caribbean.
So true. And that kiss incident upset me as a teen, and even more now since I've had guys go out with me, but turn down any further dates openly saying they just didn't want to go further with race. People don't even believe someone would openly say "I just think I'm going to stick with dating white and Asian girls," but my first ever date did and I wont pretend it didn't impact me to this day. They should not have made her interact with that situation and made it "you're going to have to be professional", that guy wasn't and I hope he at least had more challenges in his work with more diversity in modeling.
I actually re-watched Alisha's exit, and it makes a lot more sense given that the girl had been mentally breaking down.
And, I'm not surprised that the one person who checked up on her, did.
This chat made a lot of things make sense
I hadn't been so engaged in a live until Alisha's came around, been waiting to see what she needed to say and, I was shocked. Wishing Alisha all the best in her recovery, and she DOES deserve that check, like everyone else.
It was definitely an eye opening chat.
Interesting to hear how ANTM was actually a traumatizing experience for Alisha (among other contestants) - would have never expected that!

OMG. Yes Annaliese, been waiting to see your reaction to this!!! As a hard core ANTM and NTM fan, It's very disappointing to hear that about Tyra. Back in Cycle 1 when the girls were eliminated she would actually go back to the hotel and have a heart to heart with them and outline what they should do next career wise. Ken Mok put a stop to that because it was taking up too much time. It does appear that as Tyra become wealthier and the Top Model empire grew and grew, she started to change. This is sadly quite common with the phenomenon of ''celebrity''

Season 18 just felt really... transparent to me... It was just so obvious that production was picking shit shots of Alisha every week on purpose... There is no way most of her photos were close to her "best shot"

Poor alisha, I really felt for her on both cycles. I am really sad, I thought BNTM would have been more helpful for her, and I thought Elle was amazing and genuine (never believed that from Tyra), but I guess not. :(

So they were keeping a girl who was not mentally stable because they wanted her to win? But if that was the case, why were they so intent on not allowing her seek help? Or making her feel worse
I think they’re the only ones who could explain their actions!
I think airing the focus group scene was fine, because at least it showcased some American people’s bigoted ignorance and racist perceptions of others who are different from themselves. I just wish the backlash that moment is receiving today was instead instantaneous as soon as it aired, so that the people would’ve been named and shamed and could’ve became a teachable moment for improvement _MUCH_ earlier.
I hear you... I just think tv has come along was since then in terms of what’s acceptable and what’s not. If this show aired in the UK there would have been complaints for sure

I honestly though Alisha was in her 20s because she was previously on BNTM (As her season being 6 i thought it was a while before British Invasion). Now with all the "tea" being spilled I see how they set up Alisha's story for her to win. You and Sophie would have been eliminated and it would have been her and Laura. Also, forcing Alisha to elimination was their last ditch effort to keep her. They saved her hoping she would take the picture but when she did it they eliminated Ebony regardless to guilt her. If it's true and she was set up to win then the elimination makes more sense now.
Damn i always said if someone wanted me to shave my head for 10,000 i'd say give me the clippers its gone yet, not for a chance like top model. I think some girls looked great in short hair and will defend that they look fabulous. Yet, bleaching Alisha's hair... if that's done in one go it would fry her hair. Dark hair in general (my stylist and I both binged watched top model and were talking about it) should be lightened in several sessions. Now I am no sure how it would work with her hair texture but still... No wonder so many girls had their hair break and fall out but of course production covered it up. Heck if you watch season 11 (I think) Sheena had her hair fall out but you never see it that season. It only shows up in the all stars.

It’s about a decade later and I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor for that comment about Alisha having an African accent and selling chicken. I was so grossed out by that and I felt terribly for her. Alisha was one of my top girls that season. Actually I loved Alisha, Ebony and you Annalise. You were my top 3. I did not care for Laura. Sorry about it. I’m not saying she’s a bad person I just didn’t think she was model material.

As someone whose grandfather was born in the UK and lived there till he was 7, I felt that they didn’t do figures in British culture justice. ANTM producers take on famous figures from the UK was just so cliché. They mentioned the Spice Girls, Margaret Thatcher, and John Lennon. Cool, but it was a bit too obvious. there are so many other famous British figures they didn’t bother to mention...like Lewis Carrol, Peter Sellers, George Michael, Helen Mirren, and so on.
I’ve never been to the UK, but whenever I read English literature or watch classic English films (and I don’t mean Downtown Abby or Harry Potter), I just feel some sort of connection or reminder of the type of person my father says my grandfather was.
You should definitely visit the Uk once this is all over. You sound very interested in the culture

I am *years* out of the loop with ANTM and have spent much of my quarantine time mini-bingeing on seasons past. Honestly, I've become so cynical about how large 'entities' (TV shows, corporations, Entertainment venues, etc.) are willing to sacrifice the well-being of their little cogs to keep the machine running. It's all about the bottom line, yo. A person is lucky to come out ahead and you have to be willing to risk everything (including your mental health) to throw in with them.
It’s like a whole different show watching it today!!!
Hey Annaliese - just been thinking about this whole African accent incident. I think it was important to showcase the racism But there was no one saying - this is not okay except for the shocked reaction (just something I have been thinking for a while - hope it makes sense)
Super sad to see that alisha is not doing well after all those years - sending hugs to her if she reads this. I am also fuming about the fact she wanted to go but they straight up told them no plus the elimination with ebony - cuz he pic was better.
Reality tv is very hardcore - doesn’t matter if Britain America or even Germany next top model - there is a rigorous process In it in terms of film / lack of sleep etc. Plus drama for the sake of entertainment- which I am not Into at all.

I've watched the show since my childhood. And as a child, I believed that the creators, producers and Tyra cared for the girls and tried to help them build a career. Now I'm 24, during quarantine I've been going through reviews of ANTM and I realized that it was just a show. I guess these humiliating contests and photoshoots had little to do with real modeling business. I'm so dissapointed in Tyra, if this was truly her attitude towards the participants. I can't imagine myself being on such huge show on TV at the age of 18 or 19 (and even 24). I feel so bad for Alisha. I hope she is doing ok and I wish her to be happy!

To be honest, I think ANTM aired that atrocious focus group is precisely because it was so shocking. I think they did it for drama and because they knew it would illicit such a strong reaction. Strong reactions = more viewers. You and Alisha are absolutely right - it should never have aired.
Oh and did you just say that you voiced later seasons of BNTM? I remember recognizing the voice and asked in the comment field if that was Annaliese, but I got responses that it was someone else. But it was you after all! How about that 😄

I always thought she seemed better then Tyra get I was wrong.
Watching all these different tell alls of antm there's one thing that comes to mind Ebonee. All the antm girls have had such different experiences, and as she was so young at the time. i can't help but wonder if in some way all the negative experiences she saw while on the show, particularly as they were instigated or conspired by these older more powerful people in the industry there was a small seed planted in her subconscious that led to her decision to "leave her people behind" once she started making waves in the industry.
