  • The Gillette Mach 3 has been around for nearly 25 years. For many it's the first triple blade razor and represents a standard. In this video we're going to take a look at the Gillette Mach 3 and compare it to today's newest model, The Gillette Labs with Exfoliating bar. We're going to see how the two match up and give you our unfiltered opinion on which razor represents a better value.

Female here and I don't use as many razors a year as you guys do, so decided to go with the Labs. Thanks for the very useful review and not sure why they make razors gender related. The biggest difference I found so far is that "Female" razors are more often plastic and cheap quality vs male that are metal or other more premium, sturdy material. Sure, they do not smell like flowers, but why would anyone care anyway, its a razor, not a perfume.

I agree 100%. I think you’re probably right that sturdier and higher quality razors are going to be made for guys. It’s probably a good strategy for women to shop mens razors.
I think the Gillette Labs gives a great shave but I also think it might be overkill for shaving body parts other than the face. I also think there may be product that can do the job well for cheaper. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I've slowlyprogressed fron the Trac 2, Mach 3 then to DE since 2004 then decided to try out the Proglide power. WOW, what a shave. Aside from the quickness one can shave with it I also noticed a lack of any razor burn over ten shaves. Occasionally I'll get that with a DE. Not once with a Proglide power. Incoming is the Heated razor. Excited to try out all these razors after a near 20 year absence from cartridge shaving. I've been somewhat impressed.

I switched over to DE blade shaving years ago…blades cost $10/100 to $30/100 and last 5 shaves for me. A rule for DE shavers is getting a BBS shave with as few strokes as possible for a comfortable shave. The Mach 3 has 3 blades…the fusion has 5. Running 5 blades over your skin is just going to increase the probability of irritation and ingrown hairs. Several of us consider the Mach 3 to be the best compromise if you are using a cartridge razor. I still use a Mach 3 for finishing up the hard to get 5% after DE blade shaving…..lower neck…under nose…chin area. I use about one cartridge every 3 weeks to a month. I have an Edwin Jagger mach 3 handle in ivory which is just gorgeous and feels great in the hand. It cost $40 but is pure class….puts the Gillette plastic/rubber handle in the shade. Shaving with a good DE razor is a pleasure now…instead of a chore.

Great channel! Subbed. Back in the day I used Bic disposables and then skipped straight to the Fusion in about 2007, somehow missed the Mach 3 out. In that time I got into DE razors and have many great vintages. I tried the Mach 3 recently and it's superb, a great cart, better than the fusion imo. I would use a DE anytime, but the Mach 3 runs close for a Tech-like daily shave, using a brush and a good soap or cream.

Thanks for watching, commenting, and subbing! The Mach 3 is a classic in my opinion and kinda where this whole proliferation of multiple blades thing started. And I think it’s still a respectable shave today. I also like a good DE Safety razor but I find that I reach for the DE Safety when I’m not in a hurry (which isn’t that often) and want to enjoy the shave. Otherwise I reach for a cartridge.

I stopped using Mach 3 for a long time (never used Fusion 5 or the following ones) when I came back the cartridges dropped in quality. They don't have the same quality as the 1998 ones. I guess it was because Procter and Gamble bought from Gillette.
The most surprising thing is that the Mach 3 blades were superior to the Shick Quattro. but now it's the other way around. Now the Gillete ones cause irritation to me and the Shick ones have improved a lot.

MACH3 just worths for few moments. Expensive for what they are.
Just started a new set of MACH3 blades. I inserted the handle into one of the blade bit and took the bit out of the transparent plastic case. Started by washing my face and then put some of that pressurized foam from the bottle on my face and massaged it against my face. Used the MACH3 blade starting from below my nose gently and usually cleaning the blades from the foam+hair against the water. It's fine for the 40-60 runs until start noticing that the blades are starting to bend. I can hear the cracking noise when I touch the blades with the tip of my thumb and I can feel blades moving while crackling. Lucky me that my shaving session is almost over. Sometimes single bit can last 2-4 sessions and then... the blades are awfully bent that my skin gets angry.
I am a long MACH3 user and it's always the same thing. I have a drawer full of bits with bent blades. Useful to take furr out of clothes.
I tried Wilkinson. These had two blades... Horrible blades... The hair always stuck between the two blades... It's like grasping your faces with your own face hair...
I also tried Fusion... same destiny as MACH3. I didn't even try the 6th blade.
I just wished that us men had some inexpensive treatment to make the hair not grow on our faces. Women complain about their menstruation but it's nothing compared with shaving every 1-3 days starting our teen youth until the rest of our lifes and gets worse each year. When we get our face cut with a blade, the mark will there forever. It can heal but it will be there. If we keep use nasty blades... the face will just continuously healing until starts to say enough and starts hitching and not healing properly while hair keeping growing faster and thicker with the age.

Hi Larry! Another outstanding review! Back in the day I used the Mach 3 and also fell into Gillettes marketing for more blades, but the Mach 3 is probably the best. But I’m going back really old school and exclusively use a Gillette 195 (fatboy) razor or the Gillette Slim, both are adjustable and take DE blades that can cost as little as $7.00 for 100 blades, depending on the brand, you just need one sharp blade. Check out the Leaf twig razor and the blades will last longer as this razor takes a snapped in half DE blade:))

I switched to a double edge razor about 1 year ago. While I had to invest in high quality artisan shave soaps, a double edge razor and blades, lathering bowl, and brush,. it was well worth the investment. Making your own lather with a shave brush is so easy and makes your face feel great during and after the shave. The double edge razor, like the name suggests, have two sides to the blade that you flip over once one side gets full of lather. I do a 3-pass shave every 2nd day. I used to hate shaving because I always felt I was getting ripped off by Gillette so I would shave long past when the blade should have been replaced. The blades I use now are actually made by Gillette but cost a fraction of what cartridge razors cost. Once blade costs about 25 cents and lasts about 4 shaves. The advantages of shaving with a DE blade are numerous: 1) lower costs for blades, 2) closer shave with less irritation, 3) by using a high quality soap and brush your skin will feel amazing after the shave, 4) DE blades do not contain any plastic so they are much more environmentally friendly.
It takes me longer to shave doing a "traditional wet shave" but to me it is worth it. Spending time in the bathroom let's me think about the upcoming day and when I leave the bathroom, my face feels fantastic. I encourage you to go online and shop companies that specialize in selling wet shaving products. They can be very valuable resources. I have done extensive research on razors, blades, soaps, brushes, and shave bowls. If you have any questions, let me know. I don't have any affiliate links. I just want to be exposed to a fantastic way to shave, much like how your father and grandfather used to shave.
The only reason Gillette developed the cartridge razor was to make you believe they were better than DE razors. Nothing could be further from the truth. Gillette is the largest manufacturer of double edge razor blades in the world. In countries, where people have much less disposable income, DE razor shaving is still alive and well. I encourage you to make the switch. You will be glad you did. It comes down to dollars and cents. Cartridge razor blades are very profitable compared to DE blades.
When I travel I usually go with carry on luggage. Sadly then I have to take with me a cartridge razor as DE blades are not allowed in carry on luggage. They can be packed with checked luggage.
    Have a wonderful day.

Historically I’ve used cheap Edge shaving cream from the can. But lately I’ve been experimenting with different shaving creams including Gillette, Harry’s (in the tube not the can), and Nivea. I plan to try a few others but I like the Nivea best so far.

For me, the Mach 3 is better. It's light, compact, you can store it anywhere, it doesn't irritate my skin like the ProShield, and the cartridges aren't insanely expensive (like the ProShield! you can buy an electric shaver for the price of 8 Proshield cartridges). as many say, gillette should have stopped at mach 3

    • @fitnessnbeer9835

Respect that opinion! The Mach 3 is the answer for a lot of guys. I believe in finding what works and the answer for everyone is different. More blades and more money does not 🟰 better.

Depends on the thickness of your hair and how frequent you shave. The more you shave and the thicker you hair then the quicker you are going to wear down the blade. Generally a cartridge will last you a week for optimal shaving.

Good Video!!! I love Gillette products lol. I am willing to pay their prices to get great products. The Mach 3 is a great razor.... I still use one on occasion. This Gillette labs razor is NICE though. I typically use a Fusion 5..... Gillette's marketing has always been full of gimmicks lol. When it comes to shaving, I'll pay the prices..... because that's something I do every single day. If I shaved once a week I might buy a cheap razor.....

I’d say the GilleteLabs appears to be better, but the value comparison to the Mach 3 is likely to be poor due to the 2-3X refill cost

lol i paid 3.77 a razor the other day for the Gillette labs. A years supply of course but if I have to pay 5-6 bucks next year for the same razors because I can’t get the same deal I’m just gonna get super cheap fusion 5 carts and use the free Proglide handle I got. The only reason I won’t go Mach 3 is because I can see how 5 blades would technically last longer and for more shaves than a three blade. I’m no scientist like you, but I’d also say 5 blades might also allow you to do less passes on your face. That’s just my two cents.

Personally I definitely get more shaves out of a Gillette labs cartridge than a Mach 3 cartridge. I really like the Gillette labs but simultaneously thinks it’s overpriced. Even with the extra durability I think the Mach 3 will come out more affordable for most. But I do think the Gillette labs is a more comfortable and efficient shave for me. Oh and that’s a great price on the Labs!👍🏾

Neither one compares to a DE razor in my opinion! I purchased a 110 pack of Gillette Wilkinson Sword Saloon blades for under $7!! Thats under 7 cents a blade, not dollars!! Plus, once you purchase even an average DE razor, it will last a lifetime!! There is no comparison on cost!! With a DE, you have so much less irritation with only one blade across your skin instead of several!! You won't get ingrown hairs either. You can purchase a nice, vintage Gillette, such as a Superspeed, for $10-$20 and never have to purchase another one again!! Get a low cost shave soap like Arko, Colonel Conk, RazoRock, Proraso, etc and you'll get some of the best shaves over those high priced cartridge razors and canned gels!!! Your skin will love you for it!!

What's up sir! Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting. I 100% know you're a safety razor guy! In fact your suggestions inspired me to try out safety razors. I'm working on a video for the Merkur 34c which is my second DE Safety Razor. (It takes a while because I like to spend time with a razor before sharing opinions) I personally think a DE safety razor is a great way to shave, especially for people with patience that are also willing to experiment with different razors and blades to find the right combo. Also, agreed that after the initial purchase a DE can be super affordable.
However I don't think a DE is for everyone. I think a cartridge is a little more thoughtless and in lots of ways easier. It's kinda like the difference between getting a real Camera and just using your smart phone. Lots of people are good with just their smart phone for photo and video. But for people that really appreciate photography, and really want the ability to control the image they capture, or professionals; they're going to want a real camera. In this case the DE safety razor is the real camera.
Going to try Henson and then Leaf next? What do you think of those 2 brands. And def going to look into the soaps! Thanks again for the suggestions!!

@@fitnessnbeer9835 You will love both! The Leaf Twig is what I would recommend for you! Now if you like the cartridge feel and pivot, go with the Leaf 3 blade. You get the benefits of using low cost DE blades with the cartridge feel and pivot. The Henson is a no nonsense shave with terrific feel and efficiency! You cant go wrong with any of them in my humble opinion.
