CZcams: Yo guys, remember that contraversial video from 2 years ago
Yes
serious. Uhhh... thanks youtube algos
its getting brought up again because of the red mag ssd shit that came out
Oh my gosh yes!
For realz
Linus goes out of his way in his video to say that he's not the camera guy, he just buys what Ed or Brandon say is best.
He's complaining from the perspective of someone who had to pay the bill.
and it was fun to watch too and agreeable...i mean a 1000$ handle...yes it will make u mad
its 2800 for an arri alexa ;)
goffi H. What context? What's that?
Then why is he complaining? Get the dudes who actually know cameras to talk about it. I think that's the criticism here. To listen to a guy complain about an extremely expensive investment, who obviously wasn't involved in researching, ordering, or probably filming with it, drives me up a wall.
I can't walk out to a debate with the disclaimer "I don't know anything about this subject I'm about to argue", and expect to go un criticized.
He's complaining because the accessory prices are fucking insane. I could build a beast PC for the price of that handle, or the fucking wire. A PC, FOR THE SAME PRICE, AS A FUCKING WIRE.
"Red monitor's are touch sensitive"
They better be for 3 grand
Which is insane since you could buy a good touch sensitive monitor for 200 or 300. He'll, an iPad has a fantastic touch display plus a powerful processor and storage, and it's 1/6 the price of that monitor.
Right... An iPad
RED cameras are not for poor people.
The only way to justify that price is to include like quarter res HDR monitor with like 1 million backlight zones. Otherwise there is no reason why they couldn't have outputted to HDMI or SDI
HDMI has 19 pins, that proprietary cable has 11, I don't see how they expect to charge more for a cable that does less. (Remember HDMI carries sound too)
The reason he got first party accessories is because the camera is a tool that needed to work every time, and he wasn't willing to sacrifice the possibility of incompatibility or failure on a 3rd party accessory. If Corridor Crew released daily videos they would understand why this would be important.
Again I don't know how people aren't getting this. Most people who use a Red are renting it. Rarely is this equipment bought outright unless it's by bigger studios or production houses. Having a lot of proprietary options on high end equipment is a huge time saver and great failsafe. Compatibility and reliability.
4:30 electronics engineer here, a cable for that kind of application is not worth 3 figures dude, that's just ridiculous
Even if they are handmade?
@@ZillyWhale ye
@@camilo3626 So it's like paying extra because it's a brand name
@@ZillyWhale It's paying extra because they inflated the price, they know people will believe their cables are somehow better so they cam charge whatever they want
Electronic engineer here, a burger isn't worth 20 bucks but you pay for that at a restaurant because they're other fees involved. Like rent. Storage, bulk buying, paying employees. 3 figure cable lol
meanwhile in canada, linus is watching this video in his 16k setup
reynalda marsetya Linus + CD collab incoming
did you see that post about one of they guys at the tech expo? her had 10 minutes to do anything he wanted on it, and he played solitaire XD
reynalda marsetya 16k is such a misnomer of a name. It's a bunch of 4k screens... Doesn't actually change the resolution of the incoming data. Impressive? Sure. 16k resolution? Not really
spmil999 it was 16k of total resolution as each screen was running at full 4k therefore it equates to a 16k combined display
James Morgan What?

Linus: "All these proprietary things and accessories cost too much"

This video was a clusterfuck before it became common knowledge that Red just buys second hand stuff from China and upmarks it x100.

@@tiufyedcegstwdfv I'm not sure even colonel Sanders knows what he's on about
They calmly and clearly explained everything, Linus was too emotional
@@kameronbelcher They A: Didn't calmly explain anything, and B: They tried to make Linus wrong, when they agreed to everything he said (if they hadn't agreed, they wouldn't have shunned the Red optional extras and gone for third party stuff wherever they could). They were also completely wrong on things like the ssd, where they made it obvious they had no clue in the first place.
So all in all, they tried to make a video debunking another video, by vaguely agreeing with it and being wrong about the rest. Not a good look
@@kameronbelcher Wouldn't you get emotional if you were ripped off?
They maybe explain how things "could" be how they are for a reason. Like the cable having "good solder joints" which is a difference of .1 cents to 2 cents for the entire cable. Shielding? 1 dollar for the best shielding. Maybe 5 if it's the bestest best shielding. Except it's barely shielded in reality, nor does it need to at that length, which they would have known if they had done any research. Where did the other 200 dollars go? Red's pocket. Cable itself is probably made in China too, but the assembly and sticker's made in USA to earn that sticker.
They cut the storage part, which the most people had issues with. Corridor reiterated without question what Red said about their mags, which has found to be a complete lie, which Linus subtly hinted, but Corridor apparently didn't know (if only they checked this claim). They brazed aside the fact redundancy is missing, which was Linus' main issue, because they mags were oh so reliable, except they themselves have had data loss because of these mags.
They call it "Why Linus is wrong" while in reality they were themselves wrong and didn't really dispute anything Linus said otherwise. Their argument about the cable, is wrong. They overcharge.
Their argument about the screen, is not an argument. All the things they argue can be connected has to yet again be paid for.
Red's first party accessories generally work best, so their argument that you don't have to use first party, is again, a craptastic argument.
And the mini mags have not undergone much R&D whatsoever, they were not carefully selected, they are simply budget mSATA SSDs with an ID in the header.
Did they edit out the part where they defend the $2-3k ssds by saying "if you're filming a shot that cost $10,000, you want it on a red ssd and not a generic ssd"
Mcfunpants hahaha! They did edit it out!?!?! They should just delete this video.

@DONNOD but linus was right tho.
@DONNOD but he's absolutely right. Red are scamming their customers by not giving them full information. Their 1500$ red mags were just regular ssd with an adapter. 512gb asd would at max cost you like 60-70$ to buy in retail.
Also no there are better cameras then the red starters for high quality 4k-8k film that don't scam you.
Red is just like apple but scummier.
@DONNOD why did linus buy red? Because he had to but was disgusted by how much they were charging for everything. 300$ for a cable? It better be made out of fucking platinum for that. 1500$ for a regular 512gb ssd? You can buy like 10 ssds for that price.
@DONNOD so ok sure, charge me high for being the only 8k starter cameras. Do it.
But why the fuck charge me 1500$ for a regular ssd in a red coloured box? Why charge me 300$ for a cable? Why make all your peripherals so expensive?
Even corridor was using 3rd party accessories. You know why? Cos red was practically scamming people.
And no just don't buy them is not a proper answer for this.
@DONNOD wait... you mean one cant drive lamborghini without a custom paint Job?
Custom paint job is a secondary. Car will still function the same with or without it. But this red camera can't do his primary without paying extra.

@@blasterfish2372 To each their own I guess.
I’m a bit out of the loop here. What mistakes did they make/edit out?
@@quanmly They defended Red's markup for the storage, the "mini mags", saying they were worth the $2k for 480GB, reiterating Red's claims that they did R&D (either Red's incompetent or they lied about spending millions in R&D and choosing the best storage). Fast forward a year and it's found that the storage is just a generic mSATA SSD in a budget line with a pin-for-pin adapter and a DRM ID to prevent people from using another SSDs.
The main issue is that they're trying to discredit Linus and his points in the video while they themselves are the ignorant ones.
Its funny how a few years later Linus is looking like he came out on top on this one. Linus has a lot of really valid points that have only become more valid with what we've learned about Red's production process in the past few years and the proliferation of affordable HDR and/or RAW capable 6k+ cameras (Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, Kinefinity, etc.). Most of Corridor's argument's seem to be "it's made really good" or "it's made for professionals" and never truly counter what Linus is saying: If this costs so much and is meant for professionals shouldn't it just work?
They also deleted a portion of the video here, you can still see the captions for it though. They deleted the part where they defended the Red SSD. Man, with all that shit they talked about credibility just really is hysterical now.
And this year, The Creator movie was made using a like 5k overall camera setup

LET THE GAMES BEGIN
scrapyard wars between the two would actually be really awesome
Xolandi SCRAPYARD WAAAAAAAAAARRRRRSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
Hell yea
I watch both Corridor Digital and LTT and they both make some valid points.
To the Corridor fans: LTT makes videos of the most ridiculous and bleeding edge of tech. They have made a name for themselves by going to the extreme and doing things with tech most people would not get the chance to see otherwise. And Linus himself is NOT a shooter himself and the camera purchase was likely recommended by his DP Brandon. In the end, he is making an entertaining video where he rants about a camera system he does not understand. He is over the top and that's just how he is. He would not have bought them if he did not think it was worth it.
To the LTT fans: The guys at Corridor have great experience with these camera systems and shooting video. The quality of work they can produce is astounding given the time constraints that go along with CZcams. Anyone who is saying they make poor quality work clearly hasn't seen their content. To those complaining about the structure of this video, that is just how they do it. There are two stories in each vlog that get cut between to make things more interesting.
In conclusion, shut the fuck up.
Holy shit, a reasonable comment! You sir are the best person here!
Robin Shorrosh holy fuck.
Most underrated comment.
I can see the same thing happening with let’s say a gun review
If I gave someone my Hk VP9 and also gave them a Hi-Point. They would probably bash Hk for the price and praise Hi-Point for the price.
Yet they probably don’t understand where the value comes from. There’s a reason you get what you pay for
I do agree although I have to say something; they (as in Corridor) say how he put it is kinda irresponsible and I kinda agree. Yes, RED buyers wont go to Linus to get info, but the people that watch him will be misinformed since most will take it as is without pondering why it's priced like that (if it's overpriced indeed, or if its correct or if it's on the middle is another entirely matter that should be discussed by people that do know and have used this cameras and others, like Corridor).
Im not saying Linus video is bad, nor that he's bad, just saying that I agree with their statement. I've seen a lot of stupid coments here, from both sides and a lot of cherry picking or not understanding the meaning of things (like why they use 3rd party although they say that the products are pricey for a reason).
Also, I have a guess why a lot of people take Linus's videos seriously; I didnt see the Red video but I've seen others and fans say it's just an exaggeration and just sarcastic, but his tone, look etc doesnt look that to someone who isn't used to his channel so probably a lot of people take his videos seriously because of that. Not saying that Corridor did that, they probably just saw it and wanted to say "Hey, it's cool but it's spreading info just from one side, here's our opinion as people that uses this tech". Still, Im not saying anything bad about Linus, I don't like his content but I get why others do and some of the tech he shows is still interesting. I also thin that Linus's fans didn't understand Corridor, they weren't dissing him as a lot of people says, they are just giving their input as filmakers but since the title is indeed clickbaity, it has their particular style and they talk "matter-of-factly" they might seem to outsiders as dissing him.
I just think this comment section is just full of people that are to hasty to write, to hateful and that doesnt want to consider what the other side is meaning and just think everyone is hating instead of just talking and giving opinions, on both sides.
thank you so much for taking the time to type the stuff i was just about to
Was honestly intrigued til these dudes tried to justify a 300$ cable smh
If the capabilities that are needed for a pro-level product aren't available, either they compromise (for a lesser product) or make their own (which is what they did). Did you listen to the part where they explained that the cables are made by hand? Also what's a $200 cable when you're spending $2k per storage device? This isn't a 'consumer' product. It's not priced for the mass markets.
@@ShokujiAkai It's overpriced, however you slice it. Their counter argument was summed up in the apparent edit they made according to the comment section. Storage they charge thousands for, are actually worth under $50. They made proprietary connectors, so that they would be the only one's to sell it at an insane price. Looks like it's the same with the rest of the accessories. I thought they actually had an argument, but all they had is defending the product by repeating what RED advertises. The actual camera is the only thing that is worth it. The accessories are not priced reasonably. Linus had a good point when going over those accessories, as RED is making sure you only buy from them at overly inflated prices.
@@ShokujiAkai So they make one statement about how the cables are possible made (as justification, there is no evidence), and then you use some made-up thing as a defense? You are a true fanboy.

TBH the LTT warehouse is worth more than a million dollars, *excluding* all the tech inside it.
With all due respect guys, just because you pay $1000+ for a proprietary card, does NOT mean it's rock solid flawless. Can't count the # of issues I've had over the years with RED Mags on shows. I've had better reliability with SxS on Arri or Sony (and hell, Sony cameras even give you a warning not to use the card once it gets to a certain # of writes), or even the days of using Compact Flash.. A high price does not mean reliability.
That’s so true. I’ve had a lot of RED mag issues as an AC, SxS has never let me down on Alexas and F55s
their not proprietary cards, the box protecting it is to avoid competition. Its just standard consumer micron mini-sata ssds running standard firmware.
wayupn Well of course the chipsets aren't proprietary. Most memory/storage isnt. But I'd argue RED Mags are proprietary because of that connector alone, unless you can point me to a 3rd party that manufactures RED mags? You said it yourself the chassis is made that way to avoid competition, which is basically what makes them proprietary
Nicolas Edwards gotcha , I was unaware you could make your own. Any resources you know of for that? I know a few RED owners that might love to go that route.

Camera equipment is crazy expensive due to technology, reliability and quality but it still does not make up for a 250 dollar cable or off the shelf ssds for 2k. A more reasonable price wouldve been 30 dollars for the cable and maybe 100 for the ssds
Guys delete this video, none of this is correct by any means. You literally edited out the part where you say you're better off filming on RED ssd's than generic ssd's when RED ssd's are literally generic ones, adapted to a proprietary connection so they can upcharge.
4:23 If they have a tech making the cables by hand that only makes 10-20 a day they should fire the tech and hire someone not incompetent. Plus like most things RED it is probably sourced in china and only the bare minimum is assembled US.
The idea that a human is somehow better at making a cable then a machine is hilarious. Obviously they just buy them from an automated Chinese factory. Someone should also teach them about how digital data transfer works. As long as the shielding is good enough for there to be enough signal integrity to run at the rated speeds then you don't need more shielding. Having twice or three times as much shielding as you actually need doesn't make the cable go any faster. They completely bought into the snake oil. The "premium" cable market is infested with scams because there is almost never a good reason to spend that much on a cable because cheaper ones are completely adequate.
The price of the SSD doesn't actually make it a better SSD lmao. Red just puts a proprietary connector on some normal mSATA SSDs.
High quality okay,
But 200$ 2 inch cable high quality? Just for a display port? Are you guys fanboying red or something ? They have the monopoly over this so they can put price stickers that high. Do you think if there was a legitimate competitor they would still put the same price tag?
it's actually kinda funny that they're defending RED yet they themselves use a lot of 3rd party equipment for their cameras.
Was looking for this comment, that's guys lol.
Yeah, they would. These cables are genuine LEMO, so the price really, *really* bites - this is coming from someone who quoted a few simpler connectors from them.
It's not $200 for a cable, sure, but $100 is pretty reasonable, considering each of those connectors is somewhere around $30, plus the custom cable itself and labor.
No doubt they have RED bias. I can understand why they love the cameras, but the cost for the hardwhere, wherever the fuck it was made or whether it was made of solid fucking gold- doesn't justify the price

Corridor caters vids to their returning audience every week rather than outsiders. That audience comes less for what the topic of the video actually is and more to see what these guys are working on. Most of their videos have an A story and a B story
It was because they edited the video after uploading. They had a segment where they defended the outrageously expensive RED SSDs because they state that the quality and reliability makes it worth it. They cut that out after it was discovered that those "special" RED SSDs are just regular $50 SSDs made by a third-party that RED just put in a proprietary enclosure. It's like charging someone $5000 for a $50 hat because you put it in their brand of wrapping paper.
@@JohnEusebioToronto Right but after uploading a video on youtube you can only cut stuff out, not add things in. The 3D printing section was there the whole time.
@@LonecloneProductions Yeah he said that. If you look above he said "They cut that out after". What he/we mean is that thats the reason the video feels so strange to watch it has quite some hardcuts
I just thought I'd type out the captions for the bit they edited out. The only part the captions don't capture was Niko's smugness. It was off the charts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What do you think the most expensive single shot is I've ever done?
I think honestly they were on Rush. Those were the most expensive shots dealing with the helicopters and tanks and stuff like that.
That's right. The one shot in Russia.
We had a helicopter landing, a tank rolling up and like yeah 40 people in soldier uniforms walking. That was it. That was probably the most expensive shot.
Here's the thing, you're recording that and that shot alone costs more money than the camera.
The helicopters and the tank alone cost us probably like 50 grand for like two or three days.
You're recording that shot on a $20 SD card or you're complaining about the fact the camera doesn't take a $20 sd card, just step back for a moment and think about which kind of camera you want to use in for the shots where the shots themselves cost more than the camera.
FOR THOSE KINDS OF SHOTS YOU WANT THE THOUSAND-DOLLAR SSD DRIVE THAT HAS GONE THROUGH INTENSE QC AND IS BACKED BY A COMPANY THAT WILL OPEN THE DRIVE UP AND FIND EVERY STRAY ONE AND ZERO IN CASE THAT CARD IS ACCIDENTALLY FORMATTED.
THAT'S THE KIND OF CARD THAT YOU WANT IN YOUR CAMERA.
That's the kind of camera you want when you're shooting $10,000 shots.
And just like that Corridor lost almost all respect I got for them.
I get what you're saying but from an engineering point of view there is a lot of proprietary bullshit. Yes red makes good camera's but their auxiliary products are marked up and not of better quality than everyone else's. Saying that some shots are expensive doesn't justify the huge mark-ups. If red would include insurance on their equipment for failure then it would be a different story and that could justify the price. From a technological point of view there is no reason for their products to be so expensive expect for wanting more money. Other manufactures also do extensive QA. BTW as an EMI engineer that cable is the single most bs I have ever seen.
ArchAngel Hey mate, not sure if your comment was directed to me but I’m in 100% agreeance with you. I was just typing out the captions for the section of the video that Corridor Crew deleted so that their incompetence doesn’t go unnoticed. I normally don’t comment on CZcams videos but the level of unwarranted arrogance displayed in this video was annoying to watch.
Capeless here right here. I didn't k or Corridor Crew had made this video, and upon seeing this I've lost a huge amount of respect for them.
The fact that they edited out the remarks regarding the SSD is all the more telling.
What a joke.
@@GtsAntoni1 its sad to see, I guess it goes to show, you never really know people as much as you think you do
Funny looking back at the comments here, Corridor Crew and LTT are actually close friends. They come out in videos together in Ijustine videos and LTT videos
Im a Corridor fan and an LTT fan. The only thing I will say is that Niko’s mask was pretty awesome.
And Linus just had Niko in one of his videos as a video editing judge, so looks like they’re all good with one another at this point, which is good to see.
@@flybriur Niko was in an other video about "why they shoot at 8k" with Bradon before that. I think they just contacted each other and made up in the background. it's kind of scummy they didn't do it publicly since this video is _very_ public and is downright shilling about overpriced products with rather weak arguments...
but if LTT was-is ok with those conditions, I don't see why we shouldn't be. I mean... LTT was the main target in this video and they collaborated afterwards with them. So in my book, it's fine to me as long as LTT is fine with this.
and now its come to light that Red just repackage off the shelf ssds and sell them for a 1000% markup
i wonder what else Red is lying about
Oh shit throwing shade to the Canadians
JET- F-16 here b4 the shit storm hits
Linus is canadian???
JET- F-16 If Linus is Canadian then he is one of the shittiest Canadian youtubers out there.
Creature Plays Games Bieber was a Canadian CZcamsr and look what he was doing in 2015/16
Creature Plays Games How you can say that when he is one of the most important tech CZcamsrs in freakin CZcams, the brands know him, he made a company out of his CZcams channel, and sometimes even the brands talk with him about tech that isn't even out yet.
Pretty shifty to edit out parts of the video instead of simply admitting you were wrong...
7:44 As someone who hasn't follow the pc scene in a while, why is the red rocket not a graphics card?
Way late and it doesn't matter at this point, but contextually as far as I'm aware, Linus was mostly just talking shit to Brandon the guy on his team that convinced him to get the camera in the first place. Part of Linus' character as a whole is that he is cheap. If he really thought it was a complete ripoff he wouldn't have bought another one, or in the most recent videos about the REDs He's taken one apart to attempt to watercool it. He's an over-the-top kind of personality and it's why some people can't watch his videos.
I'll add that Linus doesn't only upload to youtube, they have their video service Floatplane they're building that doesn't have the same constraints as youtube, so they do take advantage of better quality.
There's a difference between joking and knowingly disseminating false information
@@edencastillo4417 Ya, but there is a reason. Incase you havent watched the vid, you should. lol
@@spicytoast6890 There may be legitimate reasons for certain products to be more expensive if they
contain higher quality parts yeah.
But if you think RED isn't adding a significant upcharge to that cost (that people will happily pay thanks to the culture surrounding it),
then you may have a misunderstanding as to how business works
Then tell him to to stop spending 10000 dollars on pc’s that are like 1% better than a pc for 1/3 the price
@@MrGameManIsCool When did he do that?
I thought that linus video was just a joke, but I can see there will be people believe that RED is kind of scam after watching that video tho.
Of cause it was a joke, he wouldn't have bought it if he'd thought that it would be a rip off.
Everyone who is considering to buy a RED camera will also know why he is buying the camera, noone just spends that money for the lols.
Time for Sam and Nico to learn what irony means.
Completely agree. He wouldn't have upgraded his entire server either.
Red cameras are a scam. Don't think it costs anything near 60K to produce those components.
+Cam Not Cam Don't kid yourself, you don't know the first thing about cameras. You should probably just shut the fuck up and sit your ignorant ass down.
Cam Not Cam, yeah, all those things are easy to make and red shouldnt try to recoup their development costs or make a profit.
What do you think about the Blackmagic Production Camera 4k?
Interesting, but $300-$400 for a cable is ridiculous. They are definitely making some sweet margins on a lot of that gear. Yay! You're both right.
