  • In this video, I talk about why I think Halo CE leaves a lasting impression on first-time players through its story and sense of discovery/mystery. Even though most of you watching (and me) have beaten it countless times, I don't think that original feeling should be overlooked.
Next video out should be an absolute behemoth, so just a heads up.

It does not hold up to a game from 2013 (GTA V) yes it is been 10 years since GTA V and that game actually still holds up well, Halo CE is a boring, bad, slog. @@m0urn1ng5tar5 Okay i'll admit that was stupid but what about Half-Life 1(1998) that game didnt to reuse full geometry for an entite level or reused levels (AoCR - TB) in Half-Life each chapter is memorable in its design and gameplay im not saying they are perfect but you get a sence of progression of levels (Ex: We've got hostiles starts slow and ends with an epic battle) wich you dont get in Halo CE's levels like im in this fucking ship and dont know when does it end and it feels like its never gonna end. In Half-Life you have fun gameplay , areas to explore, cool gimics like the tanks and bradleys, the game always has fun and amazing sections with many gimics in between as the game goes on till Xen cause xen is shit. Halo CE is a classic shooter i get that but thats not an excuse to reusing entire levels 3 times , Also there is the library the level that is shit, the game has ton od bad game design that make it pain to to through mainly on legendary after the 2nd half. Honestly it doesnt hold up well to Half-Life but is an Fantastic Title of its time so yeah.

What I love about CE is how overpowered you are. CE captures the feeling of being a super soldier better than any other Halo, and you genuinely feel like the most powerful thing on the ring up until the Flood’s reveal. All the guns are powerful, and none of them feel useless, unlike a lot of weapons in the later Halo games. If CE didn’t have the health system (which is an amazing way to counter your overpoweredness) you would be absolutely unstoppable.

The mystery for me is the most compelling part of the whole original trilogy (pentalogy including ODST and Reach). The feeling of grandure and scale and alien ineffability of the Forerunner structures, and then the intrigue of the terminals in Halo 3m, and the sense of encountering so much more vast than yourself in the level of Reach where you save Halsey. I think it's the mystery that 343 really killed in the new games by overexplaining every part of the lore behind the forerunners etc. There's no mystery left in the Halo universe, just empty shells where it all used to be. I don't think it's a nostalgia thing, I enjoyed Infinite, but I enjoyed it as a fun and silly FPS game - there's no sense of depth to any of the Forerunner relics you encounter. It just feels like a theme park.

Halo 2's big plot twist was the Arbiter. IMO Halo 3's big plot twist was that humans were the descendants of forerunners. 343 games later retconned this plot twist out of the canon but it was explicitly mentioned by Guilty Spark ("you are the child of my makers, inheritors of all they left behind, you ARE forerunner") and implied by Gravemind ("child of my enemies") and the Prophet of Truth ("your forefathers wisely set aside their compassion"). Halo 3's plot twist was just blunted so much by future retcons.

When I first played Halo: CE, I was young enough that I had the absolute worst attention span and "reading comprehension" (for lack of a more fitting term when talking about experiencing a video game), so even though I understood the overall story and events of Halo: CE, there were so many things that I missed or did not understand, and one of those things was the Flood. I had a vague familiarity with them already, because I was first introduced to Halo: CE when I watched one of my cousins playing one of the later missions (I'm not sure which one, because I could swear that the layout/design was identical to that of 343 Guilty Spark, but I distinctly remember seeing him fight Rocket Flood, which I'm pretty sure are not present in that level), though I think the lack of context of what I was seeing while watching him play helped keep me from being completely robbed of the surprise in their reveal (though, the impact was reduced somewhat because when I first played Assault on the Control Room, I played it with a friend who was always my co-op partner when playing each of the first three Halo games, and he had played that level once before, and for some stupid reason he decided to skip the ending cutscene; so when we played 343 Guilty Spark, I didn't understand why we were looking for Captain Keyes, nor did I have the context of seeing Cortana's frightened/concerned reaction to learning that the Covenant "found something buried in this ring" to set me up for the level).
What I failed to understand for the longest goddamn time was what the Flood actually were. Since you primarily fight infected Elites, and their heads typically just uselessly hang backward to the point that they're out of plain view when facing them head-on, I just figured that these were some sort of alien species that was inherently hostile to all other alien life. And I have no idea why I couldn't realize that the shorter, emaciated ones were infected humans. My aforementioned co-op partner told me that these things simply eat other lifeforms. Specifically, he said that the little tentacled ones (neither of us knew that these were called "infection forms" at the time) drank your blood, and that the larger ones ate your flesh and organs. I'm not sure if he got this information from someone else, made it up, or if it was based on a misunderstanding of what Cortana says in the opening cutscene from Two Betrayals, but when we later reached that part, I thought that her description of humans and Covenant serving as the Flood's "food" seemed to confirm my friend's explanation. You'd think that I'd put two and two together with that paranoid Marine yelling about "turning me into one of those things," but I guess I figured that he was just crazy or talking about something not depicted during gameplay, or something. Or you'd think that I'd FINALLY get the point of what the Flood are when we played Keyes and saw the disturbingly grotesque image of the Captain assimilated into the Flood, but nope. And I certainly wasn't perceptive/attentive enough to catch the monitor's comments about "infection" and "vectors," especially when it comes to anything he said during combat in The Library. Probably the only thing that might've gotten the point across to me during the game is if I could have actually witnessed an Elite or a Marine get attacked and assimilated into the Flood by a pod infector right in front of me like we could finally see in Halo 3, but sadly, the original XBOX clearly wasn't capable of processing something like that (outside of, perhaps, a pre-rendered cutscene, but I believe that all of the game's cutscenes were in-engine).
Thankfully, I always did like to read (despite my aforementioned terrible reading comprehension at the time), so I jumped at the opportunity to check out Halo: The Fall of Reach and its sequel Halo: The Flood, which covered the game's events. And, with that, I finally understood what I had been fighting all that time, and it explained a LOT about what was happening and what was at stake and why the monitor was so eager to activate the ring. If only I could have been perceptive and attentive enough to have picked up on all of that the first time I played the damn game. Knowing the harrowing nature of the Flood and what they were capable of would've vastly improved my experience.

Seeing all the flickering and what not reminds me how buggy the MCC version (Gearbox PC port) of CE is. There's an Easter Egg in this mission where you can stay on the Pelican at the beginning of the mission and it'll fly you around to another part of the map where you can run around on top of the hilly area that serves as the boundary for the level. Eventually you'll find a marine up there that just stands there and does nothing. I you watch newer videos on this Easter Egg they'll say that if you stare at the marine long enough that his eyeball will start protruding from his head and you can see that happen in the videos. But this doesn't happen in the OG Xbox version of the game (the marine is there but his eye won't protrude from his head), only in the MCC version (and I assume CE Anniversary since both are based on the Gearbox PC port). It's just another MCC bug. Anyway, just thought I'd share that. Great video though, I enjoyed it.

Just something to note Halo Combat Evolved or some know as Halo 1 Combat Evolved or just Halo 1. On MCC is not the same experience on the original Xbox. As MCC is using a now modified Gearbox port of Halo CE. It's significantly better than the original gear port but still has its issues but definitely getting closer to that original looks, sound, scripting. Pacing etc.

343 actually fixed a lot of the gearbox port issues like giant Cortana being able to change colors again and the return of the fog on two betrayals along with many others

To me, Cortana using British slang was her method of mocking Guilty Spark. Even though he doesn’t have a British accent, the manner of how he speaks almost comes across as a proper English butler.
Which makes sense considering he is a sort of servant and caretaker to the ring.
I know Cortana was originally written to have an English accent but most of the dialogue didn’t have British slang until TB. The only other example I can think of is the very end of the game when Halo is destroyed she says to Chief: “Fancy a look?”

It sure hasn't made an effect in the last 4 MONTHS I CAN TELL YA THAT!
(MCC updated 4 months ago and Halo CE to this day has a memory dump issue that isn't resolved. 10 minutes of play used up 27 gigs of RAM and the frame rate crawls. Legacy graphics help VERY temporarily. Shutting the game down locks your processor up and it can take up to 10 minutes afterward to drain all the used memory back to idle levels)
To be fair, it's a 22 year old game on an ancient engine.

You're right, it left a lasting impression on me. As the weakest Halo part. Drawn out levels, repetitive level designs, incredibly slow pacing, inaccurate weaponry, random explosions, sudden difficulty spikes (library, anyone?). Halo 2 is a better Halo CE and I'd recommend anyone to skip the first Halo entirely. The mystery factor you proclaim that makes it great is not worth it in exchange for one of the worst gameplay experiences I had in the last decade as a first time player.

I played it for the first time. This game is great, reminds me a lot of Half-Life. I don't know why i haven't played this series earlier. And funny how old graphics is just better, i ended up playing with it, new one looks really generic and i have zero bias or nostalgia factor.

The only impression it gave me was pain. It was so repetitive.
(I bought the master chief collection two days ago to relive old times, what better way to spend time while having covid being stuck in my room).
It took me a day to beat CE, and most of the time it was so repetitive and long, the Library was the WORST most repetitive mission of CE. Nonetheless, story is fun, guns are fun, vehicles fun. Good game.

One thing I hated about the sequels of Halo 2 is how they were graphically downgraded from CE. If Halo 2 could have had the exact same graphics as CE but its new content, I'd have been content.

I found halo 3, despite how cool the game is, underwhelming in the weapons sandbox which is a huge turn off for me.
Halo 2 was a blast, but the campaign is a frustrating horrible exp on legendary
Halo 1 was not as pretty, but frankly the sound was the best. The game felt faster and more lethal to me😊
