That was hilarious.
The smoking writer was probably John Swartzwelder-who I think still has the record for having written the most episodes of the show. Eventually they stopped tolerating his smoking, so he went to a diner and sat in the booth and smoked and wrote there. Then, when, they banned smoking in restaurants, he bought the booth from the diner, brought it into his home, and continued writing and smoking in the booth. Eventually he stopped going to the studio except for when his scripts were finished. Then he would just drive up in his car, hand them out the window, and drive home. He's a legend in comedy, and was considered reclusive, though I know they called him on one of the commentaries and he actually answered his phone. He was cooking a steak, if I remember correctly.

His name was at the front of most of the epically amazing episodes, I noticed that as a kid. Homer gets a gun springs to mind, and the stonecutters, Frank Grimes, so many. Conan to his credit wrote the Monorail episode, which is also way up there.
I still believe John Schwartzwelder was an alter ego writers used when it was a collaborative episode. If not I'd love to see Conan interview him, the two best simpsons writers. Legends

I found what he said to be interesting cuz I live in the Dominican Republic and for a while too they only ran seasons 10-12 over and over again, I never understood why but I would also come back from school and watch those episodes every single day.
And I know many fans hate those seasons but I got used to them lol

Gotta agree. When people talk about the best sitcom of all time, or debate whether UK comedy is better than US comedy (I am British BTW), I’ll always point them to the golden era of The Simpsons.
I’d just sit there and ask Conan questions about the Simpsons for literal hours lol. Homer Goes to College imo is not only the best Simpsons episode, but one of the funniest American animation episodes ever.

The universe made sure that Conan became the legend he was destined to become. It’s crazy he got the job to replace Letterman and it’s crazy that they gave him 3 years to prove himself. The odds were against him in such an insane way that you gotta think things happen for a reason in life. Conan should never have had a chance at super stardom yet everything went his way to make it happen. And thank God for that! He is one of the best to do it if not THE best
I hope someday to meet Conan O’Brien. I really want to tell him that I appreciate his writing and sense of humor. It has gotten me through university when I was very young. And it was a Challenging time in my life. But I got through it because of Conan.
If he didn't get Late Night he would have taken over The Simpsons (eventually) and ran the show and seasons after 12 would have been much better.

Genuinely more interested to hear Ed Sheeran interview Conan than the other way around
Every once in a while I will return to some clips from the 90's simpson and honestly it convinces me everytime that for a brief period it was one of the best animation series ever, not only were the stories relatable and had great social commentary but the jokes were almost zucker-brothers level at how many jokes they would cram in a short episode. It really was an incredibly written show for a while.
I remember those days getting in from school and 2 episodes on bbc 2, good times

In Puerto Rico we had The Simpsons in the aftertoon, two episodes, obviously the spanish dub and they also had a fee seasons 9nky since many episodes would repeat. The monorail episode is my dads favorite

Seasons 1-10 are gold - everything that came afterwards is disposable
Season 8 was already far below the quality of what came before. Not bad but certainly not on the level of the previous seasons.
@@jarosbodytko6462 "Far below" seems like a stretch. While a few episodes were a bit weaker, season 8 had some of the best episodes like "You only move twice" or "Homer's Enemy" of all time.

Interesting that the CBC in Canada also had two episodes of the Simpsons on after school when I was a kid.
Used to be you'd get home, watch Kids in the Hall on the Comedy Network, and then switch to CBC to watch the Simpsons.
In my opinion the simpsons in its prime was the best television show ever made.
Easily, when I heard that Disney was buying fox i assumed that they wanted control over the xmen again but I was wrong. They wanted the simpson's.

I lived in the UK when Simpsons was becoming popular in the US and I saw my first episode at a friends house on Sky TV (satellite)
It was the episode where homer finds out he has a half brother named Herb, who runs a car manufacturing company.

Double bill of the Simpsons after school was just peak TV. My whole sense of humour formed watching that show. So intelligent and original.
In Spain it was 14:00 to 15:00 so late lunch, I'd always have to leave during the commercial break of the 2nd episode... except for weekends and holidays, of course! They showed us 730 episodes per year when the show was less than 250 episodes old!

To correct Ed (sorry to be pedantic), but BBC2 Simpsons in the late 90's/early 00's aired once a day on BBC at 6pm, except for one day a week (I think either Wednesday or Friday) where it was a double bill.
Actually in England it was one episode a day at around 5 or 6 pm, and a double bill on Fridays. Those were the days.
Ireland was the same. One episode at 6pm on the national broadcaster (RTE 2), and because we were lucky enough to get Channel 4 too, we could also switch to their showing at 6pm in case we preferred their episode.
And we had more than 4 TV channels. I have no idea why he thinks we had just 4 channels.

You can really tell the moment Conan came to the Simpsons. The comedy improved ten fold. His fingerprints are all over that show's legacy.

That’s really funny that even across the world kids were watching two episodes of Simpsons a day. I remember there was a point where the local Fox affiliate here took off the Simpsons and they got so many emails they had to bring it back. And they announced it with commercials that literally said “now stop emailing us!”

I think there were later seasons on a channel called Sky One, which a lot of people didn't have. I saw the odd episode and they did seem less grounded and more wacky. I think for the most part Britain got the heyday on the Simpsons in the 90s.

Agreed, the writer who smoked all the time is probably the awesome Swartzwelder ....and he probably had a massive cigar in hand every time you saw him.
He *very* rarely speaks to the public (he just doesn't want to, as a recluse) and I remember a commentary for one of the Simpsons episodes (The Cartridge Family) where he's cooking a steak when David Cohen calls him up on the phone out of the blue ahah.
He finishes his commentary via phone with: "Too bad this isn't actually John Swartzwelder though!" Hehhe. That scamp!
