- A few years before Scott Reiland turned 40 he set a goal to run a marathon before hitting that pivotal birthday. After a few six mile runs and an ill-advised 15 miler, he had a sore knee and found himself "burying a package of thin mints" on the couch. He never did accomplish that marathon goal before turning 40, but three years later, he properly trained and found himself lining up for the first annual "Cheap Marathon" run by Green Stride Races in Salisbury, Massachusetts.
This is story of Scott's journey through 26.2 miles of pain, freezing temperatures, an incredible cheering squad, and ultimate triumph.

I finished my first marathon yesterday and I won my age division
Alyssa Schultz whoa, that’s amazing! Congrats!
Wow, awesome. I hope you'd run more others.
great job!
nice
This is just heaven inspiration.
11 weeks till Chicago M
My dad & best friend died of a brain tumor .....
My wife is a survivor of a brain tumor.
I fear no Marathon.
You got this man!
Don't fear it, but you better respect it.
Amazing. I listened to this without headphones while training and it was a great listen. Freakin amazing.
Thanks Scott. I'm 54 and preparing for my first marathon two months from now. My goal was 4:15, but after watching this video I guess I should just concentrate on finishing and have un with it.
First time looking at these comments. Thank you all for such positive comments. I am really glad you enjoyed the video. The truth is, Greg Shea who put this video together is super talented. He can make ANYTHING interesting!! Please keep watching Running With Cameras!
Amazing story, best marathon vlog I’ve seen. I will be running my first marathon in March (Los ANGELES marathon) at age 41. I’d like to finish it in under 4 hours but based on everything I’ve read and seen My goal should be to finish. Great job and thanks for the motivation!
Good luck with your first marathon! I think it’s always good to have multiple goals (even a few non performance ones- high five a bunch of kids, make it to the starting line fairly healthy). First marathon- I agree, main goal to finish, but nothing wrong with a time goal to keep you moving when it hurts. Good luck!
I'll run my first Marathon in LA this March 2020.
fuck that go for 3:45
Love the positive vibes, and your approach to serving when running. I want to be more like that.
Anyone can run a marathon it just depends how much pain you want to be in. But saying that I have respect for everyone who competes no matter what the time shows when they cross the line. I have done 8 and still have not cracked my sub 4 goal.
Im 42 this year and in 11 weeks I'll be doing my 1st marathon .....scared and excited .......
That’s awesome! Good luck with your training!
@@RunningWithCameras thank you so much for replying. I've got a bit of a dodgy knee, but going physio tomrrow have it checked out. I'm up to 14 miles now. X
Good Luck on your 1st. My wife is 54 and doing her first with me (60) in Los Angeles in 3 weeks. I have done 2 marathons before but was over 20 years ago. I tell my wife OUR first goal is to just finish. Slow and steady cause the WALL will come. It becomes mental after that, providing you have been taking in nutrition along the way. GOOD LUCK ! and enjoy the experience.
Best of luck to you!
Still months out from my first one and… already nervous beyond belief 😬
Congratulations. What an awesome effort. Loved watching this video.
I can relate to so much of this as I only started running at the age of 41 years old myself.
Don't think any first time marathon runners should set a time target. The only real goal should be the finish line.
Nutrition is a key part of any marathon preparation. We're all learning and all make mistakes. I'm sure you'll take the experiences of your first and make your next marathon a more comfortable experience.
Congratulations once again and big respect for raising 4,000 dollars for such a worthy cause.
Ps. I have fallen a couple of times during marathons. Those little bumps can feel like mountains when you’re tired. It completely knocks the stuffing out of you. Main thing is you were able to dust yourself down and finish.
Great comment, thanks for watching!
I also wanted to complete a Marathon before my 40th and missed my goal. 2 years later I just flipped a switch and am running the NYC marathon as my first... by the time of the race i will only have had 10-11 weeks of training, I'm getting nervous about not being able to finish and fueling during.
NYC is an amazing marathon. 10-11 weeks of build-up is a little tight, but you can do it! I’d recommend running at a really comfortable pace, take in the experience and forget about a “fast” time.
Amazing!!! Very inspiring, I’ll run my 1st full marathon in December & 44 yrs old mom here. Thank you for this video 👍🙌💪
Good luck w/training! That’s fantastic you’re taking on the challenge of a marathon. It’s an unforgettable experience
How'd the marathon go?
Well sir, this ment so much for me too...... I am a blind runner in South Africa and loved this video you made.
I also just completed my 1st marathon and I also have this feeling that I just cant run for my own enjoyment.
What you did was so brave and honrable, Sorry, English not my 1st language.
Lots of respect to you!
You changed my live for ever.
Hope you do many more of these marathons and videos.
GREAT BIG THANX AGAIN FROM SOUTH AFRICA.....!!!!!
Hi Scott, I just wanted you to know I’m getting ready to run my first Marathon and your video has been a huge inspiration to me. I’ve watched it several times. It really gives me hope!
I started out three years ago joining Weight Watchers and riding a Mountain Bike. I dropped 125 lbs. I became interested in 5K’s from other members coming to WW. That progressed to 10K races and now I’m going to do a Marathon, in four days.
It was said I should have done a Half Marathon first, so in the last month I did 4 Half Marathons on my own!
I’m also 61 years and I truly believe it’s never too late as long as you train and believe in yourself and give it all you got!
Thank you Scott! 😎👍
I really enjoyed this down-to-earth, real experience. To see the confidence, the training, the struggles and pain helps me prepare for my first in 5 months.
What an amazing story!! Thank you Scott for running for FRAXA & fragile X research!
Thanks for this awesome motivation. I will be running my first marathon by Feb 2020 a month before I turn 44 and I'm so excited. I've run a couple 10ks and one 21k race before tho, the idea of running a 42k still scare the shit outta me, lol. But I know I have to do it, I can do it even if it takes 5hrs. I wish I can finish at 4hrs. This video just gave me the inspiration I need. Thanks.
I got teary watching this on the part that you mentioned about runners encouraging one another out there; melts my heart because I've been on both ends.
I discovered your channel yesterday and it’s my new favorite channel related to running! I had been training for my first half marathon last year when Covid hit and that’s when everything stopped. I have since started running again and signed up to be part of the lottery for the Baystate Marathon. Thank you for inspiring runners like me! Your channel has really given me a boost❤️
19:00 I see a warrior LIVING!!
Love seeing this type of video!! I am 19, I did 31 half marathons and my PB is 1 hour 36 mins...
And last Sunday, I did my first ever marathon and finished in 3 hours 39 mins... the last 12 km was hell but managed to keep up with 5:10min/km pace...
When the pandemic is over, I can't wait to run full marathon races and will run faster to get qualify for Boston Marathon!
Congratulations on your marathon finish!
You are a true inspiration Scott. Thank you for sharing your amazing journey. Best marathon vlog I’ve seen. Regards from England.
Watching this 3 days before my first marathon and it helps
Good luck with your race!
@@RunningWithCameras Was fun ran a 413.49 at Phili
Such an inspiration.I am you, you are me. Good Luck in Boston! I'm following
Mate, really enjoyed the honesty of all this.Ive signed up for the Virtual London Marathon in October, first marathon and I’m 60 in May🤔.Found this vid really inspiring, will save it and watch it again every now and then.Hope you and your family are well, best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧
You are almost the same age as my father. I wish he would be such a good example of mental toughness and inspiring and say - Kid, you can do anything in life, you just need to set a goal and work hard for it.
A big thumbs up. Congrats!
Great Job Scott. I'm currently training for my first marathon on May 3rd 2020 and i'm the same age as you when you completed yours. When I first started to train I wanted to break the 4 hour mark. I have come to realize in the last 2 weeks that it's very unlikely I reach this goal and finishing is what i should strive for. This video is great inspiration and motivation. Thank you!
Great video! Well done! I'm here in Ireland getting ready to run my 1st marathon in Cork in June24!
Congratulations on your success in running your first marathon for a great cause too. I ran my first marathon (the London Marathon) without any preparation in 2003 and hit the wall at 15 miles, there after walking and running the last 11 miles. I finished with my legs like lead balloons and it took a week to recover with little sleep for two days due to pain. I ran my second marathon (a virtual marathon) in 2020 (with a slower time). I am now to train, ensure I have the right nutrition so that my next marathon in 2021 is better. Preparation, training and nutrition is key.
Scott is legend. Some say he turns his beard to ice and then melts it with his smile
So much love for this! Such an honest but inspirational story! I am running my first marathon next year before my 40th and this was so good to see. I did laugh at the end when asked if you would run another Marathon 😂 yes, yes I would. I think that's safe to say how we all feel. It's hell on earth but my god you cannot beat that feeling of the finish line xx
Thank your for mentioning all your mistakes. The wind made it way more difficult.
What. Great video , thanks for inspiring everyone
Great story, true grit. Congratulations. I am in the UK, training for my first ever marathon in April 23!
Good story! Much better than the videos of just the day of the marathon.
Inspirational my friend. Thank you for sharing!
Doing a marathon next April in memory of my dad who passed away two weeks ago! Thanks for the video. I’m just going to aim for 4hrs 30 and see how it goes. Well done for a cracking video
Good luck w/training & your marathon. Condolences on your Dad’s passing. Your marathon run will be a nice tribute.
Thank you! That’s what’s going to get me through, seeing all my family on the finish line and I’ll be able to say that was for you dad! Xx
This is the best marathon vlog I've seen!! I'm 17 yrs old and 4 months ago I ran my second half-marathon and I felt confident enough to register myself to a complete marathon, it was supposed to be in April but due to this pandemic the marathon was cancelled temporarily, now I'm waiting to a new date and I'll hope I'll finish it in a great time!!
Good luck! That’s awesome (minus the pandemic part)
Great documentary and a greater story. #humbled
Thanks, Richard!
Great video, it's nice having that much support from friends and family. I did my first marathon when I turned 50. I definitely get what you say about feeling humbled being out there running.
Nice video man! Really reminded me of my first marathon. The part that you feel humble and all goals are thrown out of the window and the only goal is to just finish. Loved to watch this.
We all need a friend like Greg!
great, humbling content! Congrats!
Great video, thank you for sharing your experience
You're so amazing for sharing your story. So brave. Everything you said is so relatable...with how I've felt during the few halves I've done. My first full is coming this December. The narration is beautiful-simply beautiful. Thank you. Thank you. The ending is so real.🥰
Aiming to run under 4 hours when 60 yrs Edinburgh ,not done one yet ,been fairly consistent training last few years ,52 now. Did 12 miles 1 hr 57 ,comfortably, feel absolutely terrific ,and tbh look great ,really enjoying training ,but am x training,it’s the way to go
This was really really GREAT! Enjoyed the whole story. Video deserves more attention.
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Amazing man, this gives me so much motivation to run my first half marathon next month.
Very happy to know this type of motivational story
Awesome job Scott !! Brings back memories of my first marathon at age 59 five years ago, your story is so inspirational.
Such a beautiful and inspiring story. Thanks for sharing.
Hey man, I just got into running this year and I came across your channel a few weeks back. I gotta say, I love the content and the wholesome of your channel. Keep it up my man ✊
Thanks for the comment! Appreciate that. Good luck with your running.
great video and great inspiration! I'm almost 41 myself (2 months to go) and just signed up for my first half and full marathon (in 2020), but am already on a training schedule.. i've done two HM in training (with my third one being planned this week).
when you mentioned that there'll be people finishing the marathon an hour and a half before you, and an hour and a half after you, this reminded me of one of my very first races (earlier this year, so i haven't been running for long), where about a km into a 5 mile race, a spectator just stood there and shouted "run at your own pace! run at your own pace!" to the group of runners. That's when it clicked for me to just let faster people pass and not focus on them, but just run based on how i feel. Definitely something that helped me, as i was obviously going out way too fast with all the excitement around me, and being inexperienced as it was my first or second event ever.
Beautiful video man! I hope youre still out there working on yourself
Great job Scott! You are an inspiration!
WOW...What a great inspiration and such a wonderful memory and film production. I plan to run my first marathon soon and I can only hope for some photo stills to remember the event. AWESOME job all around!!
What a great bloke
What a nice bloke - congrats - proud of you
What a such beautiful history man. It remember me my first one too. I could feel your journey as mine. Keep it up
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Inspiring,I’m 56 and just signed up to run London 2022…
Thank you.
You are a runner man.. Congratulations!
You are wonderful as a runner as well as an inspirational figure! Great story.
Great job bro! Not everyone got to experience what you did
Great Video. Thank you for telling your story, Very encouraging and positive.
The lesson I learned today, your quest is not mine and my quest is not yours. Everyone who runs a marathon is running their own quest.
Beautiful video
Such an inspirational message! I know I can do one now.
Congrats. Personally, I think doing a multiple loop course for your first marathon is much harder than a point-to point or a single loop race. Its a nice distraction to see different scenery throughout the journey. Way to stick it out.
inspiring!! thank you sir.. just what i need
Great job and great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm 46 and about to start training for my first marathon. Kind of nervous, but also excited! :)
Thanks, Alan! Good luck with training. It’ll be an unforgettable experience running your first marathon
Great video. What a nice guy! Well done.
Thanks so much for sharing the story
Lol with pace group ,good response not to get too obsessed about times,
Another awesome video, and the story was so inspiring #humbled
So damn inspiring man 😎💪🏽
Awesome, keep on going!
I got back from my last deployment in 2012, in 2013 I would turn 41, I wanted to accomplish 41 races by my 41st bday, the maui marathon, was it, and my bib number was 4100,,,,get out and run
Very inspiring!!!!
Awesome
Great video, I’m 62 and gonna try my 1st marathon, been running for 10 months and type 2 diabetic. Had a question- what was wrong with eating the bake potato the day before? . I know I can’t do that due to my blood sugar just curious
Hey man, good luck w/marathon training (amazing notching your first at 62!). Way to go! Re: Scott’s baked potato - it’s not that this was a bad choice - it’s more that it’s the only thing he ate the night before (not enough calories)
watching this exactly 364 days later
This was awesome. so inspirational! LOL @ the If trump can run so can you sign
First marathon this year
Heart Attack cramp!
FUn stuff! Great job Scott!
❤️
from the start date
Which device r u using for uploading training on strava
Mostly Apple Watch. Sometimes Suunto Ambit Peak 3
Ooo my God
It is obvious he didn’t make it to sub-4.. But WTF?: all this talk about pace and then not showing the finish time? Why?
"If Trump can run
So can You"
Well said young man.
The flippin Trump sign 🙊💩
Embarrassing to have your kid hold it
Never trust a thin mint
Omg
"If Trump can run, so can you!" xD HAHAHAHA
lost me with at the bringing in the Trump political crap in on your story. running has zippo to do with politics...
Very inspiring! Also TRUMP 24!!
Way too much talking, joking, socializing. YOU SHOULD’VE BEEN IN A ZONE OF COMPLETE CONCENTRATION. BUT STILL THIS WAS AN INCREDIBLE FEAT. RUN 2 6 m I l e s.😮😅
