Really good find, very pleasing to see my old Villa heroes from my teenage years but they failed to make much of an impression
      against an all-star City team.

Aged 14, I'm certain I went to this game, stood up on the Holte End. Great to see the old Villa Park, this is a great find.
Prior to this prolonged match, there was precious little of fully featured Villa games, even allowing for the 1971 League Cup Final
I can only recall the 2-6 home defeat versus Chelsea in October, 1967 which is here on You Tube but it has to be said a poor camera
position at the back of the old Trinity terraced paddock, much too low to fully appreciate the game.

I always regarded Bruce Rioch as my all-time Villa hero, I used to thrill at his explosive left-foot bombshell shooting
but I'm wondering if I saw him through rose-tinted spectacles, he was rather anonymous in this match against an all star City team.
And disappointingly, he didn't do very much in the League Cup Final against Spurs.

Villa finished a distant third in this 1972/3 season,... well behind Burnley and QPR.
I remember how the Clarets gave us a 3-0 walloping at Villa Park.
The following season, third position got you promoted but sadly Villa finished in a disappointing mid-table position,
never in the running to go up. And a very decent manager, Vic Crowe got the sack. It was a decision which haunted him for the rest of his life.

i was 10 yes old and was at the witton end watching this match does any villa fan rememember the hill at the witton end ? i think the hill was there from 1920s -1976 when it was shave d off for new terracing villa lost0-1 too first division manchester city villa were back in the second division after wininng the third division title the previous season 1971/72 you see Leeds united (Fa cup Winners ) should have played Derby County(league div 1 Champions) they both pulled out of the charity shield so the fa awarded the tie to aston villa & manchester city instead (div 3 champions vs 3rd club in div 1) and villa won the toss of venue (villa park /maine road) the charity shield moved too a wembley final in 1974 between leeds united & Liverpool and its been at wembley ever since bar the millieuiumn stadium
