2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture Review: TRD PRO lite.

- The 2021 Toyota 4Runner Venture is the definition of “If it ain’t broken, tweak it just a bit.” Even though that’s not exactly how the saying goes, that’s what Toyota has been doing with the 4Runner. It’s crazy to think that an automotive model’s generation lasts double digit years.
Starting on the outside, the fifth generation’s facelift has been a great design upgrade to distract you from the fact that this generation is 10 years old. With some colors being specific to one year, this Venture trim offered the black front bumper cover which added a nice contrast to the Barcelona Red color.
You can consider the Venture trim like a TRD PRO Lite because it’s got a little bit of the TRD PRO goodies but at a lower price. One of the major differences is the that you don’t get the FOX shocks but you do get the aggressive looking 17” TRD alloy wheels.
Under the hood you get the 4.0L V6 with 270HP and 278 Lb.ft of torque. We didn’t really like large amount of low end torque loss that was felt from a stop but the mid to high range was exceptional for highway passing. The drivetrain power loss was remedied by putting the 4Runner in 4H which is not something we’d want to do considering the fuel economy is not the best at 17MPG combined.
When you hop into the 4Runner, our model lacked side steps so we actually did hope in, you’ll be seated in very comfortable leather seats with the TRD logo in the headrests. The big selling point for me was the power windows. It’s a small pet peeve but the 4Runner does a great job at offering not just auto down windows, but also auto up and it does it for all the windows. there’s been many times where we’ve reviewed a nearly 6 figure priced vehicle and you have to press and hold the up button for the windows. Let’s normalize the ALL AUTO option that the 4Runner offers.
Besides the MPGs, the infotainment is also the other low of the 4Runner. They have “tweaked” it to offer the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto which brings this a little more to the modern day systems. The UI or user interface is what is a little dated looking with uninspiring selection of colors. You’ll want to be in the Apple CarPlay system so it’s something you’ll be able to overlook.
Even though the 4Runner is overdue for a model, it’s kind of hard to make that decision when sales are still strong. Whether we decide to get the current generation or wait for the next generation, you really can’t go wrong with the 4Runner and the Venture trim has a lot to offer for your ad-Venture. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
There should be a built in remote start even with that key. Click LOCK-LOCK AGAIN, then HOLD DOWN LOCK. lights should flash and then engine turns on
Well there you go. I probably tried that and other combinations like 10 times. Good to know it has it cause that was one of the deal breakers for me and my wife and now we want it even more! Thanks for watching!
This does not work at all on ours. Too good to be true....
@@craighamelin I know they have remote connect with the app and even though I’m in tech, I’d like to have it in my key fob and not on my phone.

@@Revmatchmedia I have the connected services and wi-fi going- free for a year I believe- but I can find nothing on remote start other than having one installed.
Not all 4runners have remote start. See this video for help. czcams.com/video/QRcx07WDsws/video.html
I just got my 2022 Toyota 4runner TRD off road premium Barcelona Red. I have Pro wheels , skid plates and blackout package. I immediately got BF Goodrich KO2's. I have moded out every thing inside including LED lighting. I will black out the Bumpers. I have no idea why Toyota still uses the gray bumpers??? This truck is a head turner!!! This by far is the best truck I have owned!!!. I have a history of a Jeep Cherokee Sport straight 6 300k miles then 2010 Nissan Xterra 180k miles. I had a Jeep owner drive by me and flipped me off...I love it!!!
Lol! That’s hilarious about the jeep owner. I have been loving the KO2s in different off road trucks that have had them. I agree totally with the grey bumpers thing which is why I loved that the venture had black trimming everywhere. Congrats on your 4Runner and thanks for watching!
I own a 2021 Venture TRD off Road. This is a exceptional vehicle.
Nice! We really loved this one and got a lot of looks from people. We miss it and may get one soon. What color did you go with?
@@Revmatchmedia I have it in a dark grey with black out door handles, badging and roof basket.
Very detailed video. Good job.
Thanks for watching. The 4Runner was a lot of fun to drive.
Just picked up this exact 4Runner for my wife about a month ago. Traded her ‘14 Trail for it- it’s the only SUV she’ll drive now. I can feel the difference in handling with KDSS on our winding and bumpy roads. Very awesome vehicle and really enjoying it. We have had many comments about the cool red color and questions as to what trim line it is with the black front, door handles, and wing in back. Glad Toyota switched back to the black TRD wheels instead of the gray they started the Venture with. Great review- thanks!!!
That’s awesome to hear. Toyota really has their colors down and the black accents are why I want to go venture trim. Any plans to mod it? Thanks for watching!
@@Revmatchmedia No major mods planned for it as my wife does not like me to mess with her rig too bad! She says I have my Tundra for that. I do have some Duratracs lined up for spring time- traded the Bridgestones, and as I did on the ‘14 Trail, I’ll put Bilstein 5100s on the front, set up one notch, which puts it at the TRD Pro stance.
@@craighamelin did you get a side step for it? The press car didn’t have one and my wife definitely needed it lol
@@Revmatchmedia No, no side steps for us, not big fans. Up here they are ice, mud and rock collectors and just get in the way for any off roading or rocks. My wife hops up into the Tundra ok, and so that makes the 4Runner seem low- lol!
just got my new 2021 4runner venture in white absolutely love it good review .
Thanks for watching! Congrats on the venture! Any plans on modding it?
@@Revmatchmedia yes ko2 next week and also putting trd exhaust in it and as I also love my tunes definitely wanna upgrade the stereo too oh yea and putting in led high beams in .
Tunes are definitely important. I didn’t think the headlights were bad till I saw them compared to some aftermarket LEDs and it was a crazy difference! These are the ones I was looking at when I get mine.

@@Revmatchmedia those r sick I want them too .
Awesome detailed review. I own a 2018 4runner blacked out with a 3 inch lift and 33 inch falken wildpeak tires. Wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
Thanks for watching and appreciate the feedback. How do you like the Falkens? We love them on the track performance side but unfamiliar with them on the more off-road side. Are they fairly quiet?
I actually love where the cruise control is only because I have been a long time Toyota owner and I know the features. It’s just a little hidden which is actually nice. Great review!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I figured it would just be something that would need to be memorized lol
Dude you really sound like you found true love. Don’t get me wrong I’m in love with my TRD pro in white. Wish Toyota still had it in voodoo Blue.
HAHAHA I think you’re 100% right on true love and on the voodoo blue! My wife also wants it in voodoo blue but the prices are insane for it. Hopefully 2022 model brings an awesome color. Thanks for watching!
Great video, but please dump the background music. It's just extra noise when I'm trying to hear what you're saying. Thanks.
Catsup color!
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
I agree. It’s just hard seeing everything else get all these new bells and whistles lol. We should be seeing an update to this by the end of the year.
@@Revmatchmedia and if I were the US Govt. I’d be saying “If it ain’t broke, fix it till it is.”
dont forget the center console 12v..can add a usb adapter. good times. nice vehicle !
The 4Runner was definitely one of our favorite rides. Thanks for watching.
I got the 2021 Venture in super white but that red is fire! If i would've seen that i think i would've been fine with that and i hate red cars.
Man that red was so nice! Definitely got everyone’s attention including cops lol. Also congrats on your venture! What options did you go with? Are you planning on modding it?
@@Revmatchmedia thanks! I'm super happy I found one; most were sold or reserved. It arrives from the docks in 7 days. Factory options are: dash cam, TRD exhaust, center console safe, blacked out running boards, and TRD skid plate. No kdss or rear sliding cargo deck but I'm super fine without them.
@@ShogunateDaimyo my wife really missed the running boards that our loaner didn’t have lol. We decided to hold off a year longer because we want to get a house. It’s been so tough not going for multiple lunar rock TRD Pros that are near us lol. Congrats and thanks for watching!
@@Revmatchmedia all day buddy! I wont need the extra step but they'll be helpful for the passengers. Hope they dont lose as much ground clearance as thr predator tube steps. Thanks for the video content!
Getting mine this Wednesday. It's in transit. 🤘 I dont think it comes with those rims. But i hope it does.
NICE! I'm itching to get one but after calculating that my wife and I only used our car for 100 miles last month, it would be sitting in the parking lot being eye candy. Then i start thinking that we'd probably drive way more if we got one lol. There was also a big Toyota off road/overlanding event here in Texas so seeing those videos makes it more tempting lol. What trim/color did you go with?
@@Revmatchmedia I got the magnetic grey metallic. Man that's a mouthful lol.
LOL. Besides the TRD PRO special colors, that's the color i like next. I have many bloopers of trying to get the names of colors in one take lol
Those are the TRD wheels that doesn’t come with it but you can buy them from your dealership
@@scrapmetal4163 mine actually did come with the TRD wheels. Not sure why but I’m not complaining.
I've owned two 4Rs. My last being a 03/V8. Sold with 295k miles on her after the head gasket failed. I've been researching the hell out of these in Barcelona Red. Depending on availability I'd prefer the ORP then the Venture if that fails. I'll immediately sell the rack and add a low profile one from another manufacturer. Other mods to come over time. Great review on the 2021 4runner Venture, brother.
Thanks for watching! We're thinking of going with the Venture because of the SofTex seating material over the cloth of the ORP. Our 6 year old helped determine that lol. I think we'd remove the rack unless we're going to needed because i really think it killed the already bad MPGs. Did you have a rack model in mind? My wife and I were also discussing holding off another year, 2022, to see if they finally decide to change the engine and add more tech like a 360 camera view that we loved in the Rav4 TRD Off-Road. Thanks again for watching and let me know what you end up going with.
@@Revmatchmedia....Keep in mind the TRD ORP comes with the softex pleather. No cloth for this dude, either. Easier to maintain. Currently have my eyes on a couple different companies. Victory 4x4 and C4. Still plenty of time to decide. I should be rolling in a new rig before the end of March. I'll keep ya posted. Who knows...maybe I'll start my own YT channel to document her journeys
@@brpnw4r94 I didn't realize that you meant the premium trim. I would still go Venture cause I like the black trim and the TRD wheels lol. I'd go for the TRD PRO but have a feeling that the modding bug would get me and i'd be swapping out suspension i paid extra for lol. I'd say document it and we'd definitely subscribe!
Took us a few weeks to find our Venture in red. The dealer actually found us one and had to go get it 200 miles away. It happened to have KDSS, but wouldn’t have been a deal breaker if it didn’t. I took the rack off immediately, very easy, and will use it for our camping adventures in the summer.
@@Revmatchmedia signed documents saturday to take delivery of a VERY popular Barcelona Red 4runner next week. After losing the opportunity twice on what seemed to be rare ORP trim in red I struck fast before the Venture edition was snatched up by yet another enthusiast..like myself. Before Saturday was over BOTH vehicles in that trim level and color had sold.
The reason it's neither super powerful and/or super efficient is because it is definitely super reliable. I'll take that ANY DAY over the other 2. Besides, 270 hp is more than enough. If you want better performance but terrible reliability so you can trade it in after a few years, making it somebody else's problem, buy a GM or Chrysler. Not a Kia though, that would just be messed up. burn the Kia.
Love our Venture, those wheels are forged though. Not alloys.
Toyota labels them as alloys on the monroney as well as on their website. I know the Sequoia TRD PRO has forged wheels but apparently the 4Runner TRD PRO’s wheels are also alloy.
@@Revmatchmedia yeah I saw that. Anyway it’s a rockin vehicle and now they’re going away as is the nightshade. Should keep the value up because there was like only 2 production years. Sad to see them go.
Completely agree. My wife and I loved it and we were hoping that the 2022 model would be redesigned. We think we’re going to look into the new Tundra since we’ll need a truck when we get our new home.
I'm in the market for a 2020 4Runner TRD Pro - Army Green
You can’t go wrong with Army Green. It looks really good on the 4Runner
Good luck
Did you get one? Did you pay more than a 2021 new?
@@ShogunateDaimyo haven't bought one yet. In California everything is marked up. I've noticed when searching nationwide the east coast and south have way better prices and no markup in certain places. Was considering just flying out then driving it back , would save so much money and get a better deal.
GIVE ME AN 8 SPEED
Yup! We totally agree. The engine and transmission from the Highlander was nice. It’s being rumored that it’ll be put into the 4Runner but with the more off road options
You drive me crazy ! You can’t explain anything! Geezzz complete a sentence
Thanks for watching!
