The square dish is called a trencher. In medieval times rich people used to put a slice of bread under their food to sop up the juices, then feed it to the poor as an act of charity.
How did I miss this?
Oh this is going to be good.
I'm going to alter down 5 notches - but it will be Delicious -
Love troasted nuts - in about anything.

ER1CKSON ... well done
ER1CKSON 😂😂😂
Beat me to it!
A rectangular wooden tableware item, whether flat or concave, is called a Trencher. You're welcome.
Here's a bit a trivia: the Caesar Salad isn't Italian, let alone Roman. It was created by Caesar Cardini, a restaurateur who had restaurants in San Diego and Tijuana, and a hotel in Tijuana. Although it dates to the 1920s, it did not become widely known until 1945, when a writer for the New York Times introduced it to New Yorkers.
omg please do a Cassius salad!! it has to be even more bitter, less sweet, full of jealousy and hatred compared to the Brutus salad
jilly jolly 😂😂😂😭😭
Why not a Cleopatra salad?. It's mostly asp-ic!
Bill Grandone But it must go well with a Marc Antony!
Or a Cicero salad based in some way on chickpeas. His name comes from the Latin word for the chickpea.
I don't know, it might have a "lean and hungry look".
A salad so good, you'll wanna et tu!
underrated gold right here XD
Tyler Folsom Brilliant!
Brilliant !
The tyrant is dead, you are now free!
I wonder who made this comment first
This salad looks amazing. I love a lot of stuff in my salad, so this is perfect for me! I agree, along side a grilled piece of chicken or pork would be great! Since you "borrowed" this from someone else, I may "borrow" it from you! Thanks for the continued inspiration!
Fabulous salad this!! Wow. I do apples in salad all the time.
Too bad you didn't publish this on March 15th... Beware the ides of March!!!
Is it a Caesar salad you eat with a knife?
Jeff Huse Winner
Et tu, jeff?
"It's hard to adjust dressings when they're not on the salad" Best point I've heard all week and its already Wednesday.
Just so you know when im cranky then watch your videos, they really make me smile. I love learning new recipes on here. You are funny and relate-able! My favorite cooking channel.
My first mind-blowing salad was a nicoise served at an elementary school camp in San Francisco. It was truly shocking salad could be so good. I'm sure Brutus will not disappoint.
......watching a Food Wishes video....and get a notification of a new Food Wishes video. What a world we live in.
(was watching the corn pudding episode by the way....my batch is in the oven)
EDIT------ If you like corn....MAKE...THE FRIGGING...CORN PUDDING
hell yeah man, love that feeling
Also let me know how the corn pudding turns out, I'm super interested in giving it a try myself but I've never had corn pudding before so I dunno if I'd like it
NeedMorePuppies Approximately 5 minutes ago was my first time having corn pudding as well....if you like corn...you will love this
animalmother556x45 corn... corn.... CORN?!
@@SecondEvilEx I don't remember eating... COoOoOooorn!?
Usually I start drooling about two minutes into Chef John's videos. Thank you, Chef John, for making such delicious food.
Happy Ides of March!
now we need an augustus salad to top them all
caligula salad.
Beef Chavez Caligula could really toss a salad.
Will he be posting the Marc Antony salad recipe soon? I need to know.
Top the salads off with Caligula croutons. Oh that's one crazy salad!
And follow it up with a Nero flambé for dessert.
"When you get the first whiffs of toasted nuts, you know you're getting close" -Chef John, 2017
"You are the Brutus of your fruitus." CLASSIC!
great one! especially with the hot weather everywhere! im stoked to try it! thank you Chef
Thank you for this salad recipe, Chef John! It has been brutally hot in Los Angeles and I can't bring myself to fire up the stove. This is getting made this week! ❤️
That is first world problems for you. Here in Cologne/Germany it is so brutally hot I can't bring myself to leave the house for salad and apples. So I either have to drink the dressing or fire up the stove for some nice stir fry.
In case you don't know a/c isn't common in apartments or houses here and public transportation don't really have it either. It would make sense anyhow, since the doors open and close every 3 minutes anyway.
CologneCarter yeah I hear ya. Our apartment has no AC, so if I want to fire up the stove, it's a terrible idea. Salads are a way of life past mid June.
I haven’t heard the expression “ fire up” in ages! Lol ! How old are you? My mother used to say this! Hearing it gave me a laugh! I just “ turn on” my stove! Hope it gets cooler for you soon!
Wow! Already had created the same salad with exactly same dressing seven years ago with one major difference: without peacon nuts (sugar was added to the dressing) and I only used slices of green apples no red ones. The rest pretty much the same. Once or twice I added sticks of wild cucumber and once I added slices green tomatos..both additions were amazing and unique!
This looks delectable and is so healthy and refreshing! Thank you Chef John!
I have always hated this salad, Chef John, and yet, YOU have convinced me to give it a try at home! You just make it look appetizing!
btw best mustard ever, and of course perfect for this dressing, is Maille Dijon!
Et tu....
Brendan McDonald lol
Brendan McDonald Brute!!!!!!!??????
I couldn't decide on an apple, so I et tu!
booooooooooooooooooooooo
Et tu romaine
THAT LOOKS AMAZING. YUM! GREAT VIDEO AS ALWAYS. THANK YOU CHEF JOHN. YOU ARE THE BEST.
Just tried the Brutus Salad , thoroughly enjoyed it , we loved the combination of all the flavours just works superbly .
I've never been this early for a food wishes video
Man I'm not one for fruit in salads, but this looks reallllly yummy. I bet some dried cranberries and goat cheese instead of cheddar would also be good. If you mixed the fresh tarragon and dill into the dressing, reckon how many days it would keep?? 🤔
Always a pleasure, Chef. Thank you!
Chef John, THANK YOU FOR KEEPING IT INTERESTING!!!
For a guy who lives on a part of the planet with some of the most amazing seafood, why is it you haven't made a video about bouillabaisse?
You are the Brutus of your Frutus hahahaha I lost it
It's looking very yummy.
I will always love you. And your recipes.
Ayyyyyy notification squad
Hey Chef John,
Try this salad with some steamed or sautéed golden beets for the soft texture and sweet notes as well as some bacon bits for a salty smokey flavor. It really takes this salad up to a whole new level. It's one of my all time favorite salads.
:) :)
Your channel is my favorite cooking channel. Thanks
I just adore your videos. Love, love, love. ♡
best quote ever "when you get the first whiffs of toasted nuts you know you're getting close"!
Scott Allen Or don't lean to close to the stove.
Sir this is great and all but all I really want is Baklava
Scott Bakula is here? where? Where?
Sebastian Michelis One day your persistence will pay off
I'mAPeach Thanks 4 the support
I'mAPeach Ive commented on all of his recent videos, but to no avail
Sebastian Michelis I know. It's not a Food Wishes video unless you ask for your baklava, and some dork mentions Chef John's voice 😂
One more great salad 🥗 idea from Chef John. Thank you 😊
I've learned so many recipes from your channel it makes me want to go to school to go to learn how to cook. your awesome
Et tu, Brutus Salad?
Orifiel-M quoque tu brute fili mi
ET Phoneus Homeus
Should have added some spearmint as garnish, since the famous Et tu Brute line was the creation of the Bard.
Shakespeare didn't write that line, it had appeared in plays previous to "Julius Caesar" and was a common term by then.
Really? Just like how Chef John didn't come up with this salad :P?
Yeah - like that.
Great salad!!!! Love the humor!!!! I am going to try this ASAP
Another Home Run Chef John! Was a total hit paired with your Gazpacho and a light curried chicken salad, perfect! And the dressing kept the apples from browning, the leftovers were delicious the next day for lunch.
Hey Chef John,
Totally love your recipes but I've got a question for you. Can you substitute the extra sharp Cheddar cheese for some Parmigiano Reggiano?
No. That combination would kill you. But seriously, parm with apples? No.
elTorpedo But why not, surely the combination of the sharp/sweet Granny Smith apples alongside the sharpness of the vinegar within the dressing can contrast well with the saltiness of the Parmesan cheese which helps to contribute a slight nuttiness that compliments the toasted pecans.
Gregory Shilov No, no. Cheddar really is the best to go with the apple. The sharpness is just perfect with it, and would just not be as satisfying if substituted.
I don't understand the issue of not pairing apples with Parmesan cheese as the concept of pairing fruit with cheese is understood to work well. So therefore, the combo of Parmesan and apple should go well together.
use feta cheese
"Wooster sauce" is always right, America.
Wor sta sher

I am doing the combination of pecan & apple in my salads years and years and years and just love it! (sometimes almond as well)
You always crack me up! And your recipes are always spot on!
so....when does this one stab me in the back lol
Once you finish it you are finished.
Friends, Romans, Countrymen,
Lend me your salad tongs!
Oh they'll definitely let you know Chef! Either they don't read to see if anyone else explained it in a previous comment, or more likely, are unable to stop themselves from showing you what an expert they are lol. Love your channel and thank you so much for sharing this

Can I use pears in the salad? Apples don't agree with me.

No
Food Wishes If not, then what?
Dwayne Wladyka You are the Brutus of your fruit-us! Use what you want!
Right! Apples agree with me, but stupid questions don't!

"you can always add but you can't delete"
nice salad. simply and it looks amazing.
Wustershershareshire sauce.
Glad to see someone knows how to spell it
Try again 😂😂😂
Now that I quit added sugars I realized everything in the freaking culinary world has had added sugar all along!!! 😡😡😡
Right? Who knew? And WHY??? Why does regular ole Cheerios have sugar in them? Sure doesn't TASTE like they have sugar! And if something doesn't have sugar, it probably has HFCS!!! It can take HOURS for a few groceries at the store if you read labels, huh?
Looks AMAZING!
This looks and sounds delicious.
My brothers name is Dijon lol
Kaela Bryant Does he burn your nasal passages when you sniff him?
Et tu Brute?
Bobby Butler I understand that reference!

Sorry, my retainer.
Well I'm allergic to apples and nuts so I think I'll stick to ceaser😂😂😂
Also Woostersheer - Worcestershire
Lucy Camsell I have an allergic reaction to raw apples. Does anyone know of other fruits that will compliment the ingredients?
CCSpectre _ pears would work
Most Brits drop the 'shire' too. So it's just Wooster sauce.
Yum, looks very appetizing and not so bland, as I like it. I enjoyed watching this video.
I just made this for dinner and it was excellent!
You don't win friends with salad.
Chef John, you CAN call it a bowl! Also my dad beat me when I was a kid
