It was my understanding that Connors spent the night before the 1975 Wimbledon final out with Nastase and subsequently lost to Arthur Ashe in a huge upset. But I read that a long time ago so who knows if it is so.
One of Ilie Nastase's funniest moments on a tennis court was, if I'm recalling correctly, in a singles match against Connors when after Connors called Nastase a "son-of-a-bitch", Nastase walked up to the chair umpire and said to him, "Tell Connors to call me Mr. son-of-a-bitch"!😂😂😂😂. In a mixed doubles match that Nastase played in, the woman opponent was grunting every time she hit the ball, so Nastase started grunting deeply every time he hit the ball to her in a baseline rally even when he hit a soft underspin shot!😂😂
I remember watching Nastase play in his heyday. He could be funny, but he could be infuriating, too. He loved playing head games with his opponents. I remember him doing this playing mixed doubles. The other team was so angry they refused to shake hands with him.

Such a great era of tennis! Also, amazing how they managed with reasonable times between points, no excessive grunting, no towelling off between every point, excessive ball bouncing during serve preparation...todays players need to change (rafa, djokovic, etc.)!
