Safety tip: One thing that is not in the video but should be is that most plastic, and especially plastic otained from petroleum, release nasty, toxic fumes when heated. So you should use the machines this channel offer in a well ventilated place.

Must depend on the temperature of the material, no ? or even when it's just a little heated, it starts emitting tiny fumes ? must also depend of the type of plastic.
That's why It's important to set the correct temperature in order not to break plastic chains⛓️

FYI the number in the chasing arrows on the bottom doesn't mean the plastic is recyclable, it is just a resin code that says what type of plastic it is. Physically it can usually be recycled, but that doesn't mean it is automatically okay to go in the recycling bin.

I am using it in school
The float test was neat. I am thinking you could design an hour glass shaped jar with a vale. Once it is all settled you carefully open the valve and let the plastic in the bottom fall through the funnel and close it again. Then you have quickly separated it.

This is so interesting! I would love to know more ways to differentiate various plastics from each other. I study industrial design and when choosing a material you often know what look&feel properties you want or dont want. You find another product with the properties you want but it doesn't say on it what type of plastic it is. Would love to learn more about determining the plastics in those cases.

A note: The reason why more plastic is being made despite being a Petroleum product is because most of it is a byproduct of Petroleum processing.
Before we started using it in industry it was waste and thrown away. Not unlike Gasoline used to be dumped in rivers and lakes as a waste product by some oil companies.

Thermoset plastic can be pyrolysed and the vapor condensed to form petrochemical feedstocks. The catch is that one needs a lot of heat to do it, but there are quite a few common industrial processes that produce high temperature waste heat. I am particularly thinking about production of lime from limestone or concrete from limestone and gypsum.

PP is often used in pipes, its also melts without toxic fumes (compared to other plastics)
sometimes plastic does not have a recycle logo per sae but it will show the type of plastic in between carrots such as this: >ABS< sometimes it can be hard to find. If it says FR then it has fire resistant chemicals in it. I assume that means it will release more hazardous fumes. GF means it has glass fibers in it.
