I took an old Asus router, an RT-N16 and disabled all of the router functions like the DHCP server and the wifi radios. I then set it up as a file server on my LAN. The router I use as a gateway has the ability to do this but I didn't want to put the extra load on it. Not only that but I've learned of a vulnerability of the USB ports on many routers that can be taken advantage of to gain access to a network. The old Asus router is great as a file server that sits behind a firewall and is not part of a device that is also the firewall and possibly vulnerable through it's USB ports. My gateway does have the ability to be an openvpn server which allows me access to my files across the WAN if I choose to set it up. Thank You, Behfor. It was this video that gave me the idea.

Best subscription pitch love the honesty made me smile. Could you not run a mesh type network with a router that is connect to a Network attached storage device that has a raid feature? That reduces risk significantly to where the risk is localized to power issues & damage which can be mitigated against with a unbreakable power supply & using a 2nd location with a 2nd NAS that is on raid function.

Hey Behfor, I have a GT-AC5300, now realizing that I probably should've gotten the RT-AC5300 as the GT-AC5300 can't install Merlin, at least from what I've read. I'm trying to setup AiDisk and I've got it mostly setup the way I like it, the only issue I'm running into is I can only add folders in the EFI directory, which is the directory where the firmware for router is stored if I'm not mistaken. I've tried most everything I can think of, but it won't let me add folders in the root directory or create folders in the root directory. I've tried adding folders with an FTP client, I've tried unplugging the drive, creating new folders on the drive, then plugging it back in, but none of the new folders I created are showing up, I've tried logging in on my admin account and creating new folders in the AiDisk interface, but it will only let me do it in the EIF or EFI folder, which I don't want to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Thank you very much for the video, it was very useful.
    I have one question :
At location 1 a have an Asus router with has an usb hdd attached. I set up an openVPN server and I activated FTP, but only the SAMBA, I let the FTP Share (2:49) disabled.
I tested the connection from location 2, and when I connect the openVPN, from windows explorer I can access the externel hdd (\\192.168.1.1), but I can't access it from the browser using the internet FTP address.
So, I found out that you can also let the FTP access only over openVPN and deny the FTP access over open internet, using the genuine firmware.
Is there anything that I have been missing ? (I also checked and when I activate FTP Share, I can access the FTP using the internet FTP address)
My question is : Am I safe by enabling the ftp only from Samba tab, and let the ftp Share disabled and access the external hdd attached to the router only over openVPN through windows explorer ?
    Thank you.

I would not recommend using any consumer based routers for file sharing purposes as you mentioned somewhere at the end of the video. This would use a lot of CPU and slows router functionality if you are a heavy user. So just don't di it and get a Sinology instead.

Hi Discovered your channel today and I am finding it it extremely useful as I have two RT'AC68Us. I have subscribed. In this video you say you are using Asuswrt Merlin because the standard Asus firmware does not allow you to turn off remote ftp access. However, you have more recent videos dealing with Aimesh. As you know, Asuswrt Merlin does not, and apparently will never, support Aimesh because of its closed nature. How have you dealt with this? Did you find any other solution allowing you to use Aimesh but block external ftp access to AiDisk?

Unfortunately (as you mentioned) it is still not possible to use AiMesh in the Asuswrt Merlin, so I won't be able to use AiDisk (the way I used it in the video) and AiMesh at the same time! An AiMesh alternative would be the Repeater/AP modes that might be helpful for now until hopefully Asus allows us to turn off remote ftp access! Thanks!

I need to get the most out of this router and having a local backup I can either access remotely or grab and go to the airport would be nice.
