  • Lex has been widely discussed as one of the worst early game characters in Unicorn Overlord, but is that his fault? Or does he just need a little bit of help?

    I did that one strategy where he’s paired up with a gryphon knight and a witch (in this case Yhana), and gave him the viper fang focusing on armored and lowest hp units with poison slash while guarding the gryphon. I can’t remember if that was your strategy or someone else’s, but it’s been great none the less! I’m especially looking forward to getting Fran to replace the generic gryphon I have in his team right now. Just too see what she can do, and if this team will be more powerful than using a generic gryphon.

    I keep Lex in the back. I let Travis tank up front. Then Lex can protect Travis from an Archer shot. I've run them with Alain, Chloe, and Clive and I tend to lean towards Chloe since she can wipe an Archer column when the unit runs into more than one Archer.
    Now, once I get access to the full game, the comp will certainly change. But Lex guaranteeing the arrow block lets Travis tank like crazy without worrying as much about Archers. Ideally I'd like to get that fourth slot open and run Yahna. A crit build Travis, hitting twice with Passive Steal, buffed by magick, has been really nice.
    I think as soon as I open up that fourth slot, I'm going to run Travis, Chloe, Lex, and Yahna.

      I like to get real specific with arrow block, if archers are in the enemy unit, block scouts, and a separate one for if scout has less than 1pp. Really goes a long way to help with survivability, even if it just burns one more enemy attack

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@xanderismellow I haven't found the need to do that, since the Archers seem to always target Travis. I'd imagine that True attacks are programmed to target high evasion.
      As for other Tactics tricks, I actually got some item with the ability to buff a character's Attack. I think that it's called Dancer something. I gave it to Lex, and it activates only if there are no Archers present. That way Lex ends up buffing Travis when he doesn't need an arrow blocked. If he does, then Lex just doesn't buff him.
      I've been insanely impressed by how much flexibility and variety this game offers.

    Ah Lex. The Dan Hibiki of the game.
    If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Hibiki, he is a character known quite well in the Street Fighter series as a sort of joke character that lives in the shadow of some clearly more capable characters.

    Lex has actually been one of my mainstays since my very first playthrough of the demo.
    As you mentioned, having him equip any sword that gives him an attack skill other than his starting skill makes him immediately viable.
    I prefer the poison sword over the sanguine blade, since it's available almost from the beginning and makes him a great addition to almost any setup.
    Your suggestion about pairing him up with a flying unit has me wondering if the accessory that gives the magic block passive skill can be used by Gryphon Knights?
    If it can, then having them pair up to cover each other's weaknesses would be pretty great, and if there's an axe that gives an attack skill that causes the burn condition somewhere in the game, then stacking poison and burn would be a no brainer 😃

    Awesome video! Goes to show that *sometimes* a Jack-of-all-trades can be more interesting and helpful than a specialist.
    Gonna round out the starting characters by helping us with Chloe, next?
    Alain, Josef, Lex and especially Chloe are very dear characters to me. For having lived and trained alongside one another for a decade, I feel like they all deserve to stay in the army story-wise, so having a genuine reason they deserve to stay gameplay-wise makes me feel good.
    I'll keep building up these four and bruteforce them through the entire game if I have to, but it helps to know I'm not alone in *wanting* them all to work out.

      His class’s starting ap action is actually good lex just doesn’t have the initiative for it. Fighters ( specifically them supporting griffins) can be good. They just need to have better growths then lex ideally go getter+ something else depending on the other units in the squad. Once they have 2 ap even with sanguine blade you’ll still want their first action to be used to buff their defense followed up by a heal. Honestly lex’s starting attack will realistically get more Valuable once the game is out so enemies and Allies have more actions. Right now it’s roughly even with the lord’s attack with the lord arguably better but sometimes they can have too much initiative to gain the healing value though this is a much easier problem to solve since you can just add target 0 ap to make sure the enemy attacks first. But to keep up the lord would be using both actions on their healing attack and lex can just use one ap on their tanking caps as far as not considering other skills go and you could stack sanguine blade on top hitting once to buff defense and once to regain hp taken. You really need things that fear archers or other ranged enemies like knights fearing griffons for them to be particularly good but griffons and knights are both excellent classes so helping with their weaknesses is a perfectly serviceable niche

    Fighters (not Lex specifically) are countered by TankBusters, so Warriors and anything that can apply GuardSeal but at the same time they hard-counter ANYTHING that relies on 'Ranged'attacks. And you'd be surprised how many attacks fall into that category.
    Furthermore their stats are "average" in most aspects compared to a Hopelite, where the main selling-point soley focus around tanking physical hits (while also getting demolished by TankBusters as well) whereas Fighters can deal respectable single-target damage, take and tank a magical attack and have average Initiative to join the rest of the team in their attackstrings.
    Something I found out works well is pairing Fighters with any class that has some level of access to 'Burn' as a status-effect (Mage, Shaman and Wyvern Master). All those classes like having a Fighter covering them from ranged attacks, too, while the Fighter can apply Burn-stacks at the same time (via Blazing Rapier weapon), which usually results in higher DPS than straight autoattacks. This also gives him a much more useful 1 AP attack when compared to Warden Slash (That attack is just bad, no matter how you look at it).
    Of course, you can still go for the ShieldBash and stun in certain situations. His 2 AP attack is rarely worth the resources, unless it would finish off the enemy by the time his (Fighters) turn starts.
    Fighters are far from being bad. They are just a tool and their usefulness depends on the someone using those tools.
    I personally rely more on Fighters for a "mixed" group that's supposed to be a flexible one rather than having a Hoplite-frontline that definitely gets wasted as soon as it faces some sort of magic damage (or magic support for that matter).
    I think the biggest weakness of the Fighter class lies in the fact that it has a bad AP/PP household and no natural way to gain extra resources by it's own. That's why Shields and other items that help out with that are pretty good on that class.

    For myself and my very weird army setup I have him on my backline with specific block triggers for my backliners so he doesn't use his PP for tanking everything, just when I need him to. I also gave him a poison sword since his damage was low the enemy would still be taking hits even with his low output.
    The squad he's in I primarily use as my "tank/stamina burner" where they can soak and heal so much damage that tougher units burn their stamina on them while still taking some chip damage while my other squads take out their allies/rest/position themselves.

    He's not necessary when running flying units at all. It's way better to just boost the initiative of flying units, so they can move first (using the plume items).
    Just having a single angel plume (that gives +20 initiative + the tailwind PP ability that boosts initiative by another 20 for flying units for an entire row) can guarantee you move first throughout the entire demo.
    And since gryphons can hit the back row, you can just kill archers before they can even move.
    Moreover, the witch equipped with that freezing tome item you get from the witch tower, is a way better combination as well. That lets you freeze an entire row.
    Since I've removed the fighter from my flying unit, it has become a WAY better unit. In fact, the more I play this game, the worse I think fighter is. I only still run one fighter in all my units, and that's just for story reasons.

There is really no reason for him to be up front at the beginning and the fact both he and Chloe came equipped with gear that gives a bonus to XP gain made me think they are better suited as XP sponges that take place in as many battles as possible. • @popers1328
    @popers1328 Před 3 měsíci

    Personally I think Travis makes the best use of the rune blade. PP steal doesn't work if the enemy guards and if there is a hoplite they will cover and guard to stop you from taking any PP so he loses nothing by using Magick attack instead when there are hoplites around.

    • @TitaniumLegman
      @TitaniumLegman  Před 3 měsíci

      But what's his magic stat?

    • @popers1328
      @popers1328 Před 3 měsíci

      Well it seems a little bit unfair to credit Josef's higher magic stat when he has a huge level advantage and promotion bonuses. Travis would certainly have higher magic attack if he was Josef's level and promoted. If we were just looking at stats, then Monica or Miriam would be better than either of them. Level 20 Josef has 11 phys atk and 16 mag atk. Level 10 Travis has 12 phys atk and 13 mag atk. So yes, Josef is slightly ahead. The point though, is how well the runesword compliments his kit.
      The runesword's Magick Attack is most useful against units with higher phys def and poor mag def, such as armored units and most classes that use shields which grant them extra phys def and guard rate. It's not very useful against enemies with better mag def than phys def, such as gladiators or backrow units like hunters and casters.
      Thieves' default attacks are weak multi hits which inherently makes them ineffective against high defense targets. i.e. 20 atk - 10 def = 10 dmg vs. 10 atk - 10 def twice = 0 dmg.
      Poison throw is ranged and very good for targeting backrow (which also generally have poor defense, which is good since this is a multi hit), but if there is a fighter, they will deflect it and if there is a hoplite they will cover and take essentially no damage because if their high defense.
      Passive steal doesn't work when guarded and is also a multi hit, making it very poor against anyone with good defense and / or a good guard rate, which hoplites and fighters have both.
      Magick attack is great into hoplites and fighters because their mag defense is significantly lower than their phys. def. Pretty much every other class is either the opposite, or the difference between their two defenses is negligible.
      The situations in which the thieves' base attacks are the situations the runesword' is most useful and you're not giving up using good abilities when you choose to use Magick attack because your other attacks are pretty bad when Magick attack is good which makes the runesword fit perfectly into Travis' kit. Paladins and Radiant knights might prefer to use Slice, Heal, or Gauche even when there are armor enemies around because none of those are particularly ineffective against armored units, Gauche in particular is nice when low evasion units are around.

    Soldiers got done dirty by early game, theres few archers and the ones that exist dont target your back units therefore a tanky unit is just better at dealing with them.
    Fliers are the exception but a hoplite can do the job and even has 1 extra pp to work for free. A tank/dps hybrid is interesting but the offensive stats of the soldier/lex is pretty bad, having swords is good but the shield removes an accessory slot and theres no point in having it if they cant take hits that well.
    Theres a world out there where the default commands that the AI uses targets backliners and soldiers have some niche utility, but this aint it.

    I still think hes a loser as the least used of my starting units. Yes you can make him work but it requires effort unlike lets say other starting tanks in alain, hodrick or travis. Those work out of the box. I dont think highly of hodrick/hoplites and i'd still take him over lex.
    For thieves, passive steal is useless vs. tanks. I gave travis the runic sword for that. When facing armored, he does magick attack. Against everything else, passive steal.
    Its not like you need more than 3-4 tanks in the demo. So by the time you get your 4th squad slot, you may have unlocked your 4th tank already like Ochlys. Alain, travis and hodrick tank for your 3 main teams.
    Yes you cant have alain in every squad and you may not want hodirick, but thats dodge tanks like travis are for. And its not like josef cant pull double duty acting as both tank and striker where he just minimizes his pursuit usage.
