- The final Soviet assault on Berlin begins today. The Soviets have two million men supported by tens of thousands of guns, tanks, and aircraft. Opposite them stand millions of men and boys of the German Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, Volkssturm, and Hitler Youth. The forces of Nazism are weakened and disorganised but determined to fight on as long as possible.

@khata_yaburyana
Yeah, I've also been here since the first episode kicked off and when I think about it, my life has changed quite a bit since the series began in 2018.
I knew most of my todays friends by then only for about a year and I was 16 at that time.
Now I am 21,5 and I have probably forgotten more about the war than the average folk nows.
That is a LOT of boxes east of Berlin. Technical military language, I know.
Fun fact, a Soviet “Division” is about 33-50% of a full strength western one, so the maps can look misleading. Although at this point, I don’t think any German Div. is at full strength, so I guess I’m being Pedantic 🤦🏼♂️
@@VtarngpbI was going to reply the same exact thing lol. Soviet "Divisions" were more like the size of a Western "regiment" or brigade. And they organized their forces into more "corps" than the West. So even at equal strength there would be tons more icons for the Soviets.
The Russian/Soviet steamroller is fully operational at this point.
@@Vtarngpb True, as you pointed out, most German divisions have not been at full strength for a good part of the last 2 years of the war. Actually many armies even from the Battle of Stalingrad. And at this point it is very difficult to keep track how many actually combat ready troops there are, as so many quickly get overwhelmed or simply desert
@davidwright7193 those American resources are still keeping them going, too. Halve their offensive power without it.
I am recently rewatching some of the older episodes, where you covered Barbarossa in 1941 and it is truly amazing how the tide of war has turned from the germans being at the gates of moscow to the soviet storming towards Berlin.

My great-grandfather was a lieutenant-colonel in the Red Army. He fought from the first day of the war to the last and brought a bunch of (most likely stolen) things back from Germany. Most of his family died in the Holocaust, but his wife and children were lucky enough to flee in time. My grandmother was born in 1949. We don't know when he found out about his family's deaths. Maybe when the drive to Berlin began, he still had no idea. Or maybe he knew and was eager for revenge. Who knows. His name was David Meerovich Khoder; he was born in a shtetl and died a retired officer.

Zhukov's attack on the Seelow Heights was more akin to a WWI battle, with a massive artillery barrage that eclipsed all others in that war, followed by a massed infantry assault. The fact that it failed, and resulted in calling forward the tanks early, speaks to how badly things had gone, and how much worse they could've been had the Germans no lost so many units in Prussia.
What's amusing is that at this moment, three different armies were racing for Berlin. Two Soviet and one American (although as said in the first part of the episode, the Americans were called off). You know, there's probably a timeline where the US airborne troops get to do their paradrop on Berlin and link up with the Soviets for another incredible Battle of the Nations style finale to the war. It's a shame we didn't get to see that.
No, it's not a shame.
With the fog of war, it's basically _guaranteed_ that there would've been some Blue-on-Red shooting.
And that would have played _right into_ Stalin's suspicions of a German-USA alliance against the Soviets.
WW2 could've easier turned into an immediate WW3....
Probably for the better. Those airborne troops would have suffered massive casualties. Or as a Dutch advisor attached to the 82nd Airborne described it, the Germans would have fought them tooth and nail, and when they were defeated thank them for sparing them the fate of having to surrender to the Soviets.
The Soviets thought well of FDR because he opposed Winston Churchill's plan to land the Allied Armies in the The Balkans (Greece and Yugoslavia) and cut off the Soviets before they got to Germany. The Soviets' affection for FDR is shown in their LIBERATION series of movies made in the late 60s and early 70s (free on CZcams) that starts at Kursk and finishes In Berlin. Although relations with the USA were tense then, the Soviets portrayed FDR as trustworthy in WWII. The series is well-done and historically accurate, which not many Soviet-made movies are.
In the 1949 Soviet film "The Fall Of Berlin", Roosevelt is depicted in a noticeably more favourable light than Churchill.
This is the living embodiment of the old phrase "Sew the Wind and Reap the Whirlwind".
And yet, there were some fanatical Nazis that KNEW that the wonderwaffen were coming to save the day.
I’m not sure anyone really believed that but we’re more than willing to throw their support behind it anyway

After watching this series for years (and it's been awesome throughout), it feels like we're at the end of a marathon. I'm quick to remind myself, however, that nothing compares to the years of suffering and brutality that so many victims of fascism went through in this years, and how impossible it is for me to imagine what that was like. When WWI came to an end, it ended with a dramatic suddenness; as this series moves to its end, the conclusion of WWII still feels, sadly, with so much death still to come, very far away even though I know it's not.
French SS troops were part of Berlin's defense. Talk about irony.
About 300 or so. Pretty hardcore Nazis, which was why they were still there. The others who had not already been killed had deserted.
worthy of a Felton episode!
There were all sorts of non-German odds and ends among the defenders, like a few Spaniards who stayed after most of the Blue Division had returned to Spain, a handful of Belarusians and Latvians who were Luftwaffe auxiliaries serving anti-aircraft guns, and so forth.
