Hello 2ndhandsouls music ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and very recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I just posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: czcams.com/users/gbardaccommunity

You have no Idea how many reactors have said "this is not my go to, but....", and they end up as proud members of the Nightwish Army.
Every song is completely different, and they'll suprise you at every turn.
And Floor Jansen's vocals.. This song just scratches the surface. She's classical trained, yes, but she masters every technique. Everything from Opera to Death Metal Growls. And all between. The most versatile vocalist alive.
This rabbit hole is massive. Probably the deepest there is.

Hello again and wow, you were quick with your reaction! Thanks for checking out Nightwish. I didn't promise too much, did I? This was just one example of their outstanding musicianship and compelling compositions. Nightwish is still very active, I just chose to recommend this older performance as it is a good introduction to this awesome band. Like I said in my recommendation, their music has a lot of variation. If you want to hear the heavier side of them, you could check out 'Romanticide' from that same show for example.
There are no flames coming out of the keyboard 🤣 It's actually made to look like the Jean Sibelius monument in Helsinki, Finland, as an ode to this famous Finnish composer. The lyrics are beautiful, but often hard to decipher, as they are very poetic. I would love to watch you discover more of their music. Have a look at Gabriel Bardac's comment. It contains a lot of information about the band and a long list with song suggestions. See you again soon and greetings from the Netherlands.

Greetings from Finland. The northern division of the Nightwish Army reporting. More Nightwish and our Valkyrie Queen please. - Wacken is a small town in Germany and Wacken Open Air is one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world. It's held every year. There were about 82 000 people shouting in front of the stage in that Nightwish concert.

  • @kimfabritiusdetengnagel2038

A big welcome to the Nightwish Universe from Nightwish Army Denmark 🇩🇰.
This song is about emotions - and when you listen to the whole song in a row - Floor (singer) will make you feel and experience the emotions. You should not be afraid of the copy right - just pause once or twice.
This is Symphonic Metal - a genre you don't really have over there - mainly due to your music industry, controlling everything, and not allowing songs to be more than 3 - 4 minutes..
In the rest of the world, Symphonic Metal are huge - like in South America - they simply love it big time!
This concert from Wacken 2013 (Wacken Open Air are one of the biggest metal festivals on Earth - and Nightwish were headlining and closing the Festival that year, with this Legendary concert! 82.000 audience in awe...
Floor had only been with the band for 10 months, at this concert - she replaced Anette Olzon in the middle of a world tour in the US, in October 2012 - having learned the entire setlist in less than 48 hours...
Nightwish is by far the greatest Symphonic Metal band ever, with Tuomas (keyboard) as the main composer. Tuomas are well known as the Metal Mozart - writing deep poetic lyrics, often with quotes from scientists and writers - and he is a genius of a composer, able to merge symphony and metal music like no one else.
And Floor Jansen (vocals) are considered to be the most versatile, powerful, skilled and talented storyteller ever - with a stage presence and charisma to match. Her range are unbelievable, just like her breath and voice techniques - she is unique.
You have barely scratched the surface of Nightwish's and Floor's capabilities with this song!! - not kidding!
Nightwish / Floor have more 100 unbelievable songs, and none of them are alike!! - including at least 5 masterpieces, that no other band can perform!!
They are they greatest live band currently - please follow Gabriel Bardac's list when he appears - his links have the best audio, and he also gives you a brief intro to Nightwish's history.
The way to go in order to follow their evolution with Floor:

Nightwish goes light, medium and heavy Metal. This song was medium. It's about unrequited love. Floor sings every genre of music. Pop, Rock, Metal, Classical, Opera with belting and some growling thrown in. She's the full package. Marko (Bass) does backing vocals on some songs. Fun fact: Finland has more Metal bands per/capita than any other country in the world. 53 for every 100,000 residents. They couldn't do pyro from the pipes even if they wanted to because half the band would be in the danger zone. 😊🤘 For a little heavier and catchy song try 'Storytime' with subtitles from the same venue. czcams.com/video/Lxox2BiLap8/video.html

The number of internationally known bands from Finland is crazy. But you have to understand that for example in Netherlands where Floor Jansen their vocalist is from, majority of radio is pop music but in Finland metal is so mainstream as pop is in Netherlands (as mentioned by her while discussing it in a Dutch show named Beste Zangers).

Meaning of the song: First, it's called a "Score" because, as you correctly pointed out, it is written like a movie score with distinct scenes or movements. Second, the story is about a young man whose heart is crushed when he belatedly realizes he has been in love with his imaginary mental image of a particular woman rather than the real woman herself who was not interested in him romantically. He is broken at reflecting on how many years he has wasted being in love with a "ghost," a figment of his imagination. Notice, during the orchestral intermezzo, the stage lighting goes all blue and a single burning taper candle appears on the background screen. This is a Shakespearean reference, as a common bit of imagery in Shakespeare's writings was that the "burning of a blue taper" summons ghosts. The gospel choir voices, incidentally, are not synthetic. They are provided on backing track by The Metro Voices of London contract choir, with whom Nightwish collaborates often. Hope you enjoy! Cheers!

This song is epic, and it is always on Nightwish setlist. But it is just the tip of the Nightwish iceberg. Nightwish is a versatile band, with many different kinds of songs. Ballads, celtic, folky, rock, metal. I like them all, but I prefer the heavier songs. At Wacken 2013, SONG OF MYSELF, ROMANTICIDE, GHOST RIVER. And the opener DARK CHEST OF WONDERS. Now that's how you start the show. Lots of pyros, but not from the "organ pipes". I agree that would be something.
Gabriel gave you lots of info and links to great Nightwish live videos with a short description of each song, whether it' heavy, mellow or celtic. Pick and choose to your liking.

Love to see US bands finding out where the real metal bands live. Finland is the home of Metal and has more metal bands per capita than any other country. Metal is played on the mainstream radio over there. If you want to check out the 'back up' singer and see a completely different side to the band, check out Romanticide also from the 2013 Wacken (vahken) Metal Festival in front of 82,000 fans. Wacken is in Germany.

    Oh, this is your intro?
Finland seems to be the Metal Music hub of the world,
more bands than almost any other country compared to population, you've got a LOT to discover.
US embargo on "Not made here"?
"Not usually my go to..." Oh, boy, I can see that is going to change quickly!
Beautiful to see another band getting into it.
The guitar, not overplayed, yep, that's Emppu, our hero prankster :)
The Orchestra was recorded at The Angel Studios, Islington, London, UK.
It would be awesome if that could be live too, but incredibly expensive, maybe "Once", in the future.
Pyro from the "Organ pipes"! That would be cool.
The team that look after lighting, pyro, video wall, catering, etc, etc are called "Crewish",
some of them have been with them from the early years.
During the pandemic, they did their own cover album, all proceeds for the crew,
that's how much Nightwish appreciate them.
At the end of concert videos, you may notice the amount of credits...
Chrissie, yes, the lyrics need a good look over :)
They did have a backup vocal choir, also recorded in London.
Oh, there is a backup vocal, you have yet to discover (going to blow you away, you'll love it!)
"Reach that range..." Mmm, wait, wait, wait.
You are a great team too, kudos, and kiitos! (Finnish for thank you, you'll get that too, soon).

Wacken is the largest annual European Rock festival (as far as i know) held in Germany. A whole village is preparing for that one event every year. In the village live about 2000 people and they expect around 85000 visitors for the event every year. A conservative politician has founded the festival in the early 90s with some artist and they borrowed some land from farmer to get the festival started. Initially there were only 800 visitors :)

hi guys, thanks for your reaction. Floor, the singer, is Dutch and married to the drummer of Sabaton. Tuomos (keyboards) is a musical genius and composes95% of their songs. This is a long wild ride. I always was into death and trashmetal, but listening to them and Epica (Dutch too) made me apreciate the use of symphonic orchestra;s (Tuomas wrote he music for the who London Pfylarmonic Orchestra and choirs) His nick name is Metal Mozart, I call him the rebirth of Mozart. The way how hw uses ruthm and key changes, transformings...is bizar. They also use a lot of tri tones to make music sound haunting (forbidden by the church :P ) Their music have deep meanings and the lyrics are poets.

Guys, please continue your Nightwish journey...you will not regret it. Ghost Love Score, is the song to hook people, and it's a great song, but if you have any interest whatsoever in music theory, Tuomas Holopainen is a generational composer, arranger, and writer. They call him "The Metal Mozart", and while I prefer a comparison to Bach, Metal Mozart flows off the tongue better. Floor is widely considered the most versatile singer on the planet, and is without a doubt, considered the best metal female vocalist (and there are many). She can growl, scream, and sing like an angel. If you like heavier stuff, they get much heavier than this one. Try Noise, Ghost River, even Ever Dream and Story Time. If you want to see a true Magnum Opus, watch The Greatest Show on Earth and The Poet and the Pendulum, but later down the road once you have a grasp of what the band and Tuomas Holopainen does. He is the keyboardist by the way, and creates about 95 percent of all you see musically. I'm telling, this is one journey you'd enjoy!

Interesting reaction. Loved how your eyes got big when Floor started to sing. The one thing about Nightwish is they don't fit in a specific pigeonhole.. They run the gamete from heavy (Master Passion Greed, Romanticide, Yours is an Empty Hope) to softer almost mainstream metal (Amaranth, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Over the Hills and Far Away) to folk sounding. Hope you continue your dive down the rabbit hole. I think you should check out their tribute to Pink Floyd's High Hopes. And for backup vocals, check out Ghost River.
I checked out some of your songs, really dug The Betrayer and Look Around You. Great sound, my only complaint is that the vocals get swamped by the instruments. The lyrics are intriguing but hard to hear. Do you write your own stuff?
BTW, there are tons of awesome metal bands in Europe. One of my favorites is Sabaton, a little harder than Nightwish, their songs are based on valor and historical battles. Thanks from Iowa, always good to find another band that knows how to rock. 🤘🤘🤘
