    where can I find a summary of the teaching points like annata, aniccha, vitarka and so forth so I can continue to practice vipassana with these points as a basic teaching guide. The vipassana centres should hand out information that epople can keep with them as a teaching guide and to encourage people to keep working.

    • @MeditationMinutesNet
      @MeditationMinutesNet  Před 3 lety +1

      All of the discourses are available to watch on youtube (which is long, I agree). That's not really a good 'summary', though those sorts of concepts might be better served by a discourse rather than a definition anyways.

    Hello there, wonderful videos and explanations. Simply the best I've seen. I was deeply moved and changed by my experience of the Vipassana Retreat and it inspired a ten year inquiry and use of a short-form do-anywhere meditation technique and practice that I cherish now. I am so happy and grateful I attended the Vipassana retreat, although like you describe in later videos it is akin to boot-camp and may not be inspired for all. Blessings to you and all the best in life and love. - Coyote

    The Goenka method seems to not be the same method as taught by the Buddha:
    The method of the Buddha is based in 'letting go' (vossagga), as stated at the end of the Anapanasati Sutta, which states mindfulness & other factors have a quality that results in 'letting go' (vossagga). This 'letting go' is most clearly stated in SN 48.9 & SN 48.10, which state the noble disciple reaches jhana (meditative absorption) by making 'letting go' (vossagga) the meditation object.
    When 'letting go' is properly established, the breathing in & breathing out will become the primary meditation object and will accompany the arising of other primary objects, such as pleasant feelings (vedana), mental states (citta) & the ultimate truths of the three characteristics & cessation (dhamma).
    Goenka's primary method is based on body scanning of mental sankharas or stress, which Goenka mistakenly calls 'vedana' or 'sensations'. These 'sensations' are mental formations of stress born from greed, hatred & delusion rather than 'vedana' ('feelings'). In reality, 'vedana' are pleasant & unpleasant 'feelings' rather than mental formations stored in the physical body.
    The Buddha's method is summarised as the development of samatha-vipassana (tranquility & insight) in tandem (MN 149). The Goenka method seems to not have enough scope for the development of tranquillity & the resultant rapture.
    The Buddha's method aims for the four jhanas, because they are pleasant abidings (with rapture). The Middle-Way of the Buddha is a way of happiness of pleasant feelings from meditation, avoiding sensual pleasures & self-torment. The Goenka method has elements of self-torment, where it focuses in unpleasant or painful feelings (rather than aims for pleasant feelings of jhana).
    The Buddha taught meditation in all four postures, namely, sitting, walking, standing & lying down. The Goenka method seems to mostly or only focus on sitting meditation.

      Thanks for the detailed description! I'd encourage everyone to try out a program for themselves before coming to conclusions. On reading your description, I don't think what I got from the program is in conflict with what you outline. Apologies that my short videos didn't adequately capture the nuance of the teachings ;)

    Goenka was not a Buddhist. He just learned meditation from a layman like himself.
    Vipassana should not be credited to him. The Tathagatha was the original. The Bhikkus of old practised it. The monks tgat followed after, regardless of Theravadin, Mahayana, or Vajrayana knows Vipassana and practises it too.
    Vipassana is not a technique. The Buddha said in the Pali sutta that it is a "quality" of samadhi, and twin practice with samatha. Goenka shortsighted when he said that the Budhha did not teach Buddhism. That is partially true because there was no Buddhism yet when the Buddha was still alive. Buddhism started after he went paranibbana. The bhikkus, his disciples, were tge first Buddhists, including Ananda. If Goenka is right, then he is saying Ananda failed to understand the teachings of the Buddha.
    Goenka's mindset was sectarian, not non-sectarian. He disassociated himself from the Sangha. The Sangha which we took refuge upon (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha) are the bhikkus and monks, not the laypeople like Goenka.
    Learn Vipassana from monks and Bhikkus, who encourages you to follow the Buddhadharna even after doing Vipassana. Goenka promoted meditation through Vipassana, but did he taught the Buddhadharma? The Buddhadharna is not just meditation, not just Vipassana. If you studied, understood, and practiced the Pali suttas, you will know that Sila, Samadhi, and Prajna are the tenets of Buddhadharma, not just Samadhi (Samatha and Vipassana) only.

      Thanks for the detailed description! I'd encourage everyone to try out a program for themselves before coming to conclusions. WRT your final comment, he does summarize the path countless times as being about Sila, Samadhi, Panna (or Prajna).
      Your observation that he was a lay practitioner are correct. I personally think you are misconstruing the intent of his comments about sectarianism but I respect your (different) interpretation and your intention to try to clarify the teachings for others.
      metta,

    Why no writing ?

    • @MeditationMinutesNet
      @MeditationMinutesNet  Před 2 lety +1

      I think writing and talking are both just external manifestations of an internal monologue or thought stream. During the first part of practice (anapana) where you are honing your attention it's helpful to notice other phenomena besides mental phenomena. And while we may think that if we could just get that one thought out of our head *then* we could sit peacefully - that may not be true. Rather, our mind is so used to prioritizing mental phenomena over all else, that we habitually keep going back there and finding more fodder. So no writing, like no talking, is a way of stilling the constant shaking that we do of the muddy water.

      it's common for meditation retreats. it's part of training yourself to be easily satisfied and eat to nourish the body not just out of boredom or entertainment.
