  • Hericiums are easy to identify and they are edible. Always eat a very small amount in the beginning to find out whether your digestive system objects in any way. Just because a fungi is deemed "edible" does not mean some of us may have some reaction to it. For more info see the links below.
In the video I gave this particular Hericium the wrong name - and I apologise for this. Bear's Head Tooth is what you see in the video which is Hericium americanum. Western Canada and US there is lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus). There is also another edible look-a-like, Comb Tooth Fungus (Hericium coralloides).
These easy-to-identify fungi are highly beneficial to our health in so many ways!

Bears Head Tooth is such a beautiful mushroom, looks almost like Lions Mane.

You got the species right and the common name wrong. This is Bears Head Tooth. Comb or coral tooth is Hericium coralloides

Many times common names are a geographical preference - but one thing is for sure, the Latin name always is the name to go by when researching. I state this important fact every walk I do!

I have a question. I sampled a piece of a lions mane grown from a kit off the internet and put it onto agar. One, it started growing and two it doesn’t look like lions mane either. It looks almost exactly like coral tooth or bear heads tooth mushrooms. Is either of this possible or should I throw it out?

I have not had any experience with kits. That question is best directed to the person you bought it from.

We also have hericiums here in SouthCentral Alaska. I have not found a good source that will help me know the difference between lions mane and comb tooth. I however know that they are hericiums for sure and have been enjoying eating them for three years now.

Hericium erinaceus (Lion's Mane) look a lot like the comb tooth except lion's mane tends to look more "solid". Check out.. www.mushroomexpert.com/hericium_erinaceus.html

Awesome Karen. Thanks for subbing and welcome to the channel. I am in the process right now of uploading a video where i harvest and cook some Comb Tooth as well as shaggy mane and puff ball. In the video while searching for the hericiums I chat about some aspects of "Survival".

Are you just eating the internal flesh and do you fry in pan with butter? Thanks for sharing your video with us.

You are welcome! I eat these a couple of ways. I have tried fried but there are few wild mushrooms I like fried - I prefer them roasted. When I do fry them I like to add them to rice with some sauteed wild greens. I also dehydrate these, grind them down and add this to my homemade soups and even smoothies!
