This is the main reason why I switched to the hammock. I couldn’t stand setting up and tearing down a tent in the rain. Tarps are great for rainy conditions, pack it up last and stuff it on the outside of the backpack. I also find condensation to be way less of an issue.

I finished watching the hike you did two years ago. That was great. You were very high energy and enthusiastic. Many smiles per mile. Now, with this newest hike, I am looking forward to your adventure. It is great you can do this again. But, there is a difference as compared to your last hike. So far I noticed less smiles per mile. Almost as if nature is challenging you more. I know what that is like. I hope all is well. Love that you can do this.

Condensation is why I went for a double wall tent. Durston X-Mid 1P. I realized recently that the temperature ratings for bags are complete bs, especially in high humidity, so you've gotta keep your stuff dry. God speed, Taylor!

When it is freezing rain and hostels say they are booked, CALL BACK, ask if they have room on the floor, they can usually make room on the floor. Hypothermia risk is real and hostel floor will save your life. Some people have slept in bathrooms along the trail during snow storms.

Love your DAILY vids! Welcome back!!!!
I was hoping to begin an early retirement this yr and start training for a ‘24 AT Thru-hike. Unfortunately, my wife was recently diagnosed with Breast Cancer and now that’s on indefinite, if not permanent hold.
Your hike this year will absolutely lift my spirits and I’ll be watching everyday.
Best of luck and keep pushing ⬆️.

    • @r-pupz7032
      @r-pupz7032 Před rokem +1

Love to you and your wife, from a random newbie hiking enthusiast in the UK!!
I've been deeply inspired by AT, PCT & CDT thru hikers. I'm disabled (mobile, but not fully) and on a very limited income, and the UK doesn't have anything quite like the big 3 trails or the spectacular vastness of the US wilderness.
However, I've still been having some amazing short ventures out, just for a day or two, mostly wild camping in a secret spot up a Welsh cliff or hammocking in the woods whenever I can.
My gear is cheap, bulky and mostly second hand, some days I do struggle to hike or set up/put down things, and sometimes I just don't have the money for the bus/train, or my symptoms are really bad.. but the times I can do it are magical and make all the struggles worth it. Those days really keep me sane!
I've worked with patients and their loved ones in the past, and I would strongly encourage you to take a few days here and there to go for a hike, whether just for the day or for a couple of nights.
You can't be there for your partner unless you also look after yourself, and most loved ones I worked with told me it really helped them both.
They could be there for their partner even better than before as they were in a better mental state, their partners loved it too - no one wants to see their partner give up all their activities to care for you, even if you know that they really want to.. so it's just nice to see them take some time to relax and have fun, you know?
It's just good to replenish your own mental fortitude and look after your own mental wellbeing. it's hard carrying all that worry and fear, sometimes you need to just set it down and blow off some steam, and that's really healthy.
If not for yourself, for your wife. But it's definitely also for yourself as your wellbeing matters too!
Again, much love and I wish you both all the best in this battle 💖💖

What good luck! So... not casting shade at all but... for those considering gear selection, it makes a big difference if you have a hostel/motel etc. every 30 miles, or if you must rely on that gear regardless of the weather, for multiple days at a time. The other long trails do not have as many local resources, so keep that in mind when considering how good gear items might be under very different circumstances. Looking forward to more videos from the AT!
