- Expert chef instructor King Phojanakong from the Institute of Culinary Education and home cook Lorenzo are trading breakfast burrito recipes and hitting the kitchen. We set Lorenzo up with $206 worth of ingredients and King’s recipe while sending a modest $13 worth of goods back the other way. To assist Lorenzo with King’s surprisingly extensive ingredient list, food scientist Rose dialed in to lend some expert advice. Which breakfast burrito are you starting the day with?

King is like lorenzos calm big brother
Kuya King
I was like, why i saw 2 lorenzo here? Did i ate somethjng funny? 🤣🤣🤣
I can definitely see that.
That's kinda racist
@@nepterr715 I'm Asian and I thought King was his brother. So...
There’s been a big shift in the last couple of months to the chef only using exactly what they’re handed instead of adding special ingredients and really making the most of it and I am LOVING all the tips and tricks I can pick up this way.
We complained, they heard us, they fixed it!
@@lindafreeman7030 Yes! It’s wonderful!
What i still don't like is that the non pro is still trying to create what the pro would have made instead of experimenting and making something new.
@@armandomarcial4836 I think it's to show that you don't need lots of training to make fancy stuff
I havent seen an episode where the chef uses other ingredients other than what's given.
Watching this right after hearing of the passing of Chef King Phojanakong. I am deeply saddened that we lost a kind, passionate and knowledgeable chef so soon. Sending love to his friends and family. Your achievements and passion for cooking will live on forever!
I'm loving this team up...
Let's go Lorenzo and KING!!!
King Lorenzo, future tag team champs
Meh, I prefer Lorenzo and Frank
Repent to Jesus Christ
“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”
James 1:12 NIV
Frank is like his weird calm American uncle and King is like his older brother 😂
Rest in peace King. This was one of my favorite videos featuring him. I learned so much and always enjoyed his take on food.
He died?
Okay but did he die??
@@qxob2123 yes he died a few months ago
Which one? Lorenzo or the pro chef?
@@belladoverrrthe pro chef, his name is king
King, thank you so much for being so clearly a wonderful human being, and for the legacy of joy you have left for the world. We will miss you terribly.
What I really like about the pro chefs they have on here is that they appreciate the cheaper food, even the really bad stuff like the the cheese slices
I think there is an episode where one of the chefs even uses Velveeta and praises it
Remember when chef Saul created an iced desert out of packets of sugar and cheap coffee
for real almost everyone ive worked in kitchens with togheter appriciate cheap and fastfood as much as anyone else, one dude i worked with had like a full diet off only french hotdogs haha. He was one of the best line cooks ive ever seen
American cheese slices are fantastic for their intended use. Other cheeses cant compete with it for meltiness.
Every time I eat those cheap cheese I diarrhea. Sometimes even with blood.
As a Filipino myself, I would like to put here for a fact that omelet is translated in Filipino as torta, not with an “ng”. We add “ng” to words that end in vowels as a linker. Example is tortang talong. In English it means eggplant omelet. The “ng” here functions as an identifier that the omelet is made of eggplant. Additional example is magandang babae, where maganda means beautiful and babae means girl.
I could be wrong as I am not sure if there are other Filipino languages or dialects or if the Tagalog language use “tortang” as a lone word but the Filipino language (different from Tagalog) definitely does not use that.
Very good explanation. Although, the torta they made was already bordering on sarciadong itlog. :-)
Yes!!! Definitely important to emphasize this.
haha good thing there's already an explanation, I was thinking of this all throughout 😅
I was trying to explain it earlier. In fact, I have already written a few words. Then I realized that I couldn't. Haha. Thanks for this.
If you dig deeper, "torta" is not a Tagalog word, but Spanish. "Torta" means "cake". In Tagalog/Filipino, when we say that a viand is torta -- tortang talong (eggplant), tortang giniling (ground meat), tortang dulong (silverfish), tortang togue (bean sprouts) -- it usually means the main ingredient has been transformed into a cake by the use of the egg. The word "torta" is often translated as "omelette" in English, but for those of us who prepare and consume Filipino food, we know that a "torta" is not exactly an omelette -- and an omelette is not quite a "torta". (Pinoys: can you imagine a cheese torta? an eggplant omelette?)
In the Philippines, a "torta" can also be exactly that -- a cake. One of the most decadent tortas is the "Torta delos Reyes" (literally, "cake of the kings") from Aristocrat. It's a 5 layers of crispy wafer cake (sans rival) with chocolate and butter icing, coated in chocolate ganache. There's also a mamon called Cebuana Torta, a sugar coated sponge cake.
“I also made a bean spread”
“Of course you did.” Lorenzo😭😭😭
Lorenzo's back!!! And that dramatic music when he flipped his omelette was everything.
Finally the comment I was looking for
Rest In Peace Chef King Phojanakong. You were such a lovely smiley man. He passed in Jan 2023 🕊️🕊️🕊️
A experienced chef is really a MasterChef, even with simple ingredients, he turned out that into a fine dining like masterpiece😋
Yes! And I was super impressed that he used only the ingredients he was given and made that delicious burrito with very simple stuff and good technique. I'm going to try that mayo for sandwiches!
RIP Chef King Phojanakong. You will be missed
wait huh? wdym?
I love Lorenzo! He’s so cheerful and doesn’t take himself seriously. He’s so fun to watch.
Finally!!! They are trying each other's dishes!! I've been waiting for this FOREVER! Also, I LOVE these two chefs together! Lorenzo has always been fun to watch and King is great! Thank you!!
I love this Gemini Duo. The perfect balace of Chef King's calmness and the otherworldly energy coming from our man Lorenzo!
Phojanakong brought life to those ingredients and created the ones he was missing. Truly a chef who knows his way around a kitchen.
Rest In Peace King 😓❤️
Banana blossom is a common ingredient here in Philippines. It is eaten as a vegetable and you can even make a veggie burger pattie from it. 😊
I love the veggie burger made from banana blossoms!! I didn't even notice it was banana blossom not until my classmate told me! (Bought it in our cafeteria XD)
Unless you’re making the patty from scratch? I dare say it’s in the same boat as other vegan meats and incredibly unhealthy.
I don’t argue with vegans, but when I do it’s about how fresh meat is actually healthier than pea/soy protein mince.
@@dylanzrim3635 no one sells processed banana blossom patties here lol(not that I've heard of) it's not even that common, it's usually made or sold in small business in the country side so it's definitely made from scratch and we're here for the taste XD (Me)
I'm not arguing too >< just to clear any misunderstanding (if there is)
@@dylanzrim3635 You will make it from scratch.
Vegans would love it. Banana blossom patties are also rich in umami flavor
There's something just charming seeing representation like this. It's not everyday you see on a dominantly "American" channel have the only two people in their video both be Filipino (Chef King is Thai as well!) and it's just nice to see :)
Edit: Just wanted to say this video will always be a treat, RIP King
Chief King is half Filipino.
@@MrKIMBO345 still a full fam to me. 🙌
@@MrKIMBO345 Yeah, I said the two people are are Filipino in the video and that Chef King is also Thai - I didn't want to erase his identity by only stating he was just one identity when he's mentioned he's both :)
Lorenzo not knowing what a banana blossom/"puso ng saging" is kinda surprised me. I thought he'd at least be familiar. 😆
@@Lalaine... exactly my friend 😁 as well as when he mentioned that he had never tried to cook torta
Rosemary trout is the perfect name for a food scientist. I once had a music teacher named melody and this reminded me of her
Our chorus and music teacher’s name is Mr.Singer.
Rip Chef King
I just learned he past away, my heart breaks for his loved one 😢💔
Man, this episode is destined for greatness with this pairing
As much as i love the swap i would really love to see a new series where pro chefs make an amazing meal with a 10-20 dollar budget. I couldn't dream of affording to make anything over $50 with my experience 😓
You should check out June Xie's Budget Eats series over on the Delish channel. She does amazing things with so little.
“oh… fudge. What the fudge?!”
I LOOOVE lorenzo 😂
I am loving King's calm presentation style! Very thorough too.
Of course Lorenzo's unending enthusiasm is perfect as well
Random: Tortang is so cute haha it’s actually just torta. Tortang is a contraction of “torta na” [food product]. Like tortang talong (basically eggplant torta). Torta is a more generic term hehe. Language is amazing! Loved this ep!!
Edited with the correct info! It’s not “torta ng”, but “torta na”. Thank you Buko Joe + the slapsoils for the correction!
I'm slightly miffed that they kept saying tortang! Absolutely spot on with the explanation though. Xx
I was scrolling the comments section to see if someone pointed this out!
It's "torta na" not "torta ng".
King ordering us to chill when cooking bacon was something I didn’t know I needed until today.
In Filipino cooking banana blossoms is called Puso ng Saging which translates to “heart of the banana”, Philippines being an archipelago has different variations of cooking this ingredient, like for example in Bicol region we cook it by adding a preferred protein (pork, chicken, or fish) together with gata or coconut milk. I also remember it being introduced as a meat substitute or vegetarian alternative for burger patties, as mentioned in the video it’s coloration turns brown quickly so it acts as a natural food coloring mimicking the color of a meat based patty. It also has a mild earthy & fruity notes but has tofu like properties that embraces a flavor well. Texture wise it’s like your average vegetable.
Freaking love this two chefs. Lorenzo is always a treat and King is just awesome to watch him cook. Need more of this duo.
Sadly, King has passed away,
I'm pretty new to this content but as I am watching, I feel that this series is actually genius. The pro chef can teach us how to use everyday ingredients in more interesting ways and the home cook cooking the expensive ingredients can give us at least a gist of what to do with expensive ingredients if we ever get a chance to work with them.
I LOVE Lorenzo's energy lol when he flip that Tortang I felt that
Lorenzo deserved a promotion on the chef levels.
I love the moment where King tells Lorenzo it's a lumpia and not a chimichanga. Speaking to a man in his own language rather than one he understands.
This episode was actually quite wholesome. I loved every minute of it. ^^
is there any episode thats not wholesome? 😆
How dare you make us wait 2:52 for one of Lorenzo’s giggles. These are dark times, don’t deprive us like this! I need it!!! 🤣
The sauce called sambal terasi here in indonesia. Never thought someone would make burrito with sambal terasi
And Lorenzo's skill is improve a lot, he's not panicked like before 😂
Sambal terasi ❤️
i love that they gave lorenzo a filipino version of a burrito and they teamed him up with his dad. haha. whoever thought of this episode idea deserves some credit! haha
Lorenzo might be older than King.
The confidence and pride on Chef King's face as the processor does its thing. Chef swagger. 😎
Lorenzo is so much fun, and to bring in King's laid back attitude... great combo!
rest in peace chef king 💛
I had to come watch an episode with King again 😥 R.I.P... 🧑🏽🍳
Lorenzo and King are the definition of same person different font
With all these videos with Lorenzo promoted as a 'home cook', he's the one who's going to be a Pro Chef in future videos.
I'd love to try both, but I'll never be able to afford a $206 breakfast burrito! I love how kind and respectful Chef King and Lorenzo are to each other ❤
RIP King. You really were a King.
I love Lorenzo’s energy and willingness to try new things.
I think it's "torta", not "tortang".
Tortang is kind of a conjunction of "torta" and "na". So when you say tortang, it has to be followed but something - like "tortang talong" (eggplant omelette).
They should have said tortang kamatis hehe
I think it would be really interesting to make a video talking to the home cooks to see if their cooking has changed any after these swaps.
I’m waiting for the day Lorenzo becomes the pro and gets his own home cook
Nobody:
Lorenzo literally every minute: “OK you guys!”
SEA representing in this video!!! I never thought of using nam prik pao in a breakfast burrito before but I will now. Thanks Chef King, a fellow Thai (he’s also Filipino!) for repping and showing there’s other things I haven’t tried putting my fave sauce on lol
Lorenzo has been a home cook for so many years. It's officially the last year you can call him amateur there is a limit you know.
he made a book about "homecooking"
Chef King is like Lorenzo's pokemon evolution.
King is an amazing addition! We want more of these two!!!
Sadly Mr. King passed away in January.
I could listen to King talk all day. Man has the most soothing voice out there by a mile.
The professionals “cook book” is always more like a shopping list 🤣
So exciting to see Banana flower.
It is a common Eastern Indian ingredient, and its use is traced back to early middle ages trade with South East Asia.
I miss King so much. The most beautiful and kind soul.
I would love a video where the chefs would do a plating with their own ingredients (just to get an idea of how they’d do it themselves)
Yes! A series like this, but the chefs are given a $ limit for the dish so we can see what they'd look for when they're buying ingredients. Like "Here's a Pro chef and a Home chef, they're making X, they have a $30 spending limit"
Generally I like costly versions but here I would love to have Chef King's burrito if I could eat only one
I don’t know if this was one of the points of the video, but I now know how to evenly wrap a burrito. That technique, King!
God, I love King's calm and uplifting vibe! He's a great match with Lorenzo!
King passed away 9 days ago.
R.I.P. King…
Whenever I see a video with Lorenzo I click it immediately. 😂 King looks like Lorenzo’s big brother!
These voices are so perfect. I could listen to this all day!
King, you're great. Lorenzo, you're great.
This one was awesome.
The amount of times I have made the recipe chef created with Lorenzo's ingredients makes me wish a recipe was released alongside. Such a great way to make a delicious dish with simple ingredients.
2:59 I like how Rose is casually like "ofc I know, I got you, now listen"
King is just so relaxed. It's amazing.
Always wanted to see Chef King and Lorenzo in this format. Thank you.
have an idea. What if you do 1 long video (30-50 mins) explaining how to use almost all modern kitchen gadgets. Their pros and cons and how they can be used for other things
Nice! Love when they come out with new ones
Love the energy of this video, Lorenzo and King are a great team.
I'ma be honest when i saw burrito i was kinda hyped thinking saul was gonna be here
I love this duo, a duo that can actually bring the happiness in me. And it looks really fun cooking!:D
Can we take a moment to appreciate not only how clever Rose is, but how she’s literally the most beautiful soul!
She really makes these series for me. ☺️
Rosemary should be a chef in one of the episodes.
Amazing duo!! Now give us Lorenzo and Saul!
These two are a great combo, I loved this episode!
Lorenzos positivity always brightens my mood🖤
"Lorenzo didn't give me any mayo today" am i the only one who's never had mayo in a burrito..?
no
rest in piece king
SO HAPPY TO SEE THEM BACK
You know the pro chefs come up with the most challenging recipes in their arsenal.
I'm waiting for the home cooks to add one obscure ingredient that may or may not go with the dish just to throw off the pros.
10:01 Haha 😂.. I am an South Indian. We try to make the most out of Banana tree. We use all the edible parts like flower, stem & fruit. We use banana leaf as a plate & to wrap food as well. And about the Banana Blossom, it's lotta labour but the taste you achieve at the end is unmatchable ! 😋🤤
Lots of love from India ❤️
Lorenzo's spot on. Banana Blossom is definitely on the 'Who Decided To Try Eating This?' list XD
Southeast Asia people love banana blossom.
Congrats on 4 millions, Epicurious!
YES! Finally! Lorenzo and King!
I love Lorenzo so much he reminds me of like a happy dad it's amazing
Such a good vibe through this video.
Love that they are tasting each other's dishes
Lorenzo: *IS A FILIPINO*
also Lorenzo: *doesn't know what is a banana blossom (puso ng saging in Filipino) and tortang (a Filipino style omelet)*
me and every other Filipino: *VISIBLE CONFUSION*
Maybe he was born and raised in the US, and havent got his hands on a banana blossom before
I guess atleast he know what RPG-7 warhead is.
I love Lorenzo. He has such a great personality!
Lorenzo brings so much energy. The vibe is amazing
The thing with these videos is Lorenzo is the true pro chef. He's making great dishes using ingredients that are foreign to him in these recipes, and isn't formally trained. Lorenzo is the GOAT of Epicurious.
Anyone can cook with words
Take the recipe away and watch it change
Filipino + Thai is such a.good food combo. Jen from Tastemade is also Filipino-Thai and she makes such great recipes.
NEED ONE WITH LORNZO AND SAUL NOW!!!
Chef King makes me feel safe
I love the videos with Lorenzo in them
Big fan of Lorenzo but I knew King 👑’ s burrito was going to be the winner
Cheers from San Diego California
RIP King
