Hey man, awesome review 👌🏻. I own a 2017 Husky 701 and the first thing I canged was the exhaust because of the sound, power and as you mentioned it’s way to hot. The reason for the heat is that the original exchaust comes with a catalyst, so the heat is trapped and can’t get out. This bike is the perfect bike for me. I went on a 3000 km vacation without any problems. So this bike is perfect for longer trips but also perfect for going nuts on it, it’s light and has a lot of power. I LOVE it 😎
What is your setup with that pipe, are you running a power commander or something else
So, I’ve watched your 3k one year and break in vid, good shit!!! I love this bike, and may be able to get over the purchase price and get one. I put a ton of miles on bikes, my 2k14 CRF250L saw 27,000 miles in 2 years! All street. I was concerned about one of these as I was not sure about reliability, and I’m planning a road trip from Colorado to L.A. and back this summer. After your vid and a pro review claiming other than wind protection, it is good for even long highway trips, I may just get one... Was looking at an FJ 09, new ‘15 model for $7500, but may pony up the extra $$ for this. Sounds like it would be just fine for the occasional long trip! Sumos’s truly are the funnest moto’s, and this one seems like it is truly versatile as well! Subscribed.
Yeah man the 701 is extremely versatile
@@MotardSteve, shit man, thanks for the reply, sorry i just noticed it, but wanted to say thanks!!! I did end up with an FJ-09, as I got great deal on a new old stock model. about 3k off! I still want one of these Huskys though. Has she still been reliable on the day to day for you? Kick ass vids and a great resource for anyone interested in this awesome bike!
@@originalkontrol Calm down dude 🤦♂️
Hey Steve! I have the same Husky. 2017 with 10k km now. Also absolutely loving it. Mine is eating some oil, but not so hard, so no problem with keeping the good level of it. And now there is a ride-by-wire error and it goes to service mode. Officials say that this error is not common for 701s. Some sensor is fcuking brains. But no problem: warranty :) anyway there is snow outside)))
Good luck and safe rides!
Dang mnan hate to hear that, but that's the downside with all the fancy tech in the bike, sometimnes it acts stupid. Good that its warranty covered though. 😁
Rotwieler has the baddest ass license plate holder with LED brake and turn signals, I have on on my 701 enduro and it is a great great solution for the blinker problem.
Great vid brother in 701
I am heading out tomorrow on 2 week trip going to push me past the 15,000 miles and join you on the past 15,000!
The front feels so light. I love it so much can't wait for my wrist to mend. Anyway love the vids. You're one of the reasons I wanted the 701 :)
Yeah dude it's a wheelie machine. Hoping you and the bike have a speedy recovery man. And glad I could help you find your dream bike man. 😁
@@MotardSteve shame, you give this bike a bad image .... wheelies on the street.... really? good general vid on, how NOT to vlog, how not to ride , the dealership you dont "like", prob just dont wanna be associated with the likes of you! bitches bout 120 kmph smh ..... be nice when the gov starts charging people with evidence from youtube..... if i see you out there.... expect a backhand!
crystal stanborough K
@@opiestanborough4774 120mph/ 200kph is very fast for a sit up zero wind protection bike. Unlike Germany etc. Most countries don't have an auto bahn and speed limits on highways and freeways is 120kph or 70mph. That 200kph+ top speed of the 701 isn't needed, and the guy likes to goon it, so lower gearing is better for him 🤷🏽♂️
I currently have an Aprilia Dorsoduro 1200, the theoretical top speed on dyno is 270kph IIRC. Few people can get them far over 240kph because they aren't physically strong enough to hold on at those speeds, 247kph on GPS was my record, and I fucking nearly lost my grip... adrenalin saved my ass is all I can say by way of explanation.
On the other hand my other bike is a Triumph Speed Triple R and I know my bike's actual top speed when it runs out of gears & bounces off the rev limiter is 282kph on the GPS with it's stock gearing and Pirelli Rosso III running at Pirelli's quite high recommended cold pressure. With the leaned forward riding position and the tiny fly screen I was in no danger of being lifted off the bike by wind drag.
Wheelies on roads are okay, wheelies on roads when other road users are around, not so much. Same goes for speeding. Far as I'm concerned rules are for everyone not individuals on their own when no one else is around. 👌🏽🇿🇦
This bike is the freakin best, so beautiful
Loving the video dude & i hit the sub button..keep up the good work..Rocking Rodders from the Uk..✌🏻
I had a minty husky smr510 , which was stolen after only 2months , after crying for about a month.....I think Im gonna go for the 701.....brand new 2018 model............great video btw
Damn man hate to hear that but yell yeah man you'll love the big Husky. Power and torque for days.
Liked subbed and thumbs up! Cheers larr! Great bit of waffling!
Much love from Yorkshire!
Appreciate it bud
(6:17)I think I might be a bit late but the stock exhaust heats up a lot because it has the catalytic converter integrated into it so the gas circles inside the exhaust for a while before exiting, causing the temperature to rise up. This also adds up in weight.
Great video steve watching from Australia
Thanks man. Glad you enjoyed it.
Solid review, bro.. nice job
+ThumperTodd Thanks man. Seems like its really getting a good acceptance which is awesome. 😎
Good Review. Solid info.
It seems like that would be an ideal bike for a snowbike track & ski set up!
I know you posted this video a long time ago but thanks I'll be buying one 😁😎
No problem man. Glad it helped you 😁
Awesome review
nice. i'm glad and so are you that you had full riding gear on when you looped it.
I have a drz400 and the husky701 is going to be my next bike!
Awesome it's a huge difference. I had a dr650sm before mine.
You earned a sub with the Carlin reference!
Man I miss that funny old man.
@@MotardSteve ditto. One of the greats. Can you imagine the stuff he'd come up with now given everything going on in the world since his "passing"?
@@HarleyRidinF00L Dude I think about that all the time
Great video! I am going back and forth on getting a DRZ or the Husky.
That should not even be a dilemma 😂
@@grandbleu944 Well obviously the Husky is a better bike. The real factor is how much do you want to spend?
Got to show some luv to another Carolina bro!
Eyyy! 😎😎😎
Good stuff brother

I literally lol with the loop reminiscing clip
+Mr. OnSomeOthaShit Ha yeah it was a must. Hopefully the only loop clip I'll ever have.
Love the 701 SM! We can't keep them on the floor so our customers must love them too! Great Video!
Oh I bet man. I know I barely got mine. They sell like hotcakes
Mmmm Hotcakes!!!
It´s Great to see somebody so Happy with the bike they bought :)
Do you think the KTM 690 R is so reliable as yours
they're the same bike, so buy one that fits your style.
It is perfect 👌🏼
Would really love the break-in video ASAP just picked up a new 18 😬👍🏽
+MiChael Joseph Ha nice. It's coming this Fri or Saturday. 😎
Cheers mate!
Hey Steve
Awesom video about an awesom bike. Your videos are so inspiring - Keep on the good work, dude!. Back in November I ordered a 701 supermoto after a long test ride (getting my 2018 model in mid March). What I really like about the Husky is it's versatility and it's ability to have fun not only at high speed. A question: Many of your motardguys rides in a sweatshits. What kind of personal protection do you wear other than helmet and gloves?
+Morten Sivertsen most of us wear armor under the jackets like Icon Stryker vests, or armored shirts. Sometimes I'll wear a baggy hoodie over my icon textile jacket. Some guys wear mx boots, I prefer high top leather construction skate shoes. Let's me feel out the foot controls better. I also wear strap on knee/shin pads(fox titan I think is the brand/product) under my pants.
Glad you're enjoying the videos man. And congrats on the ordering of your new Husky.
Howdy. THANKS for sharing yor armor preferences!! Most people don’t! I do. Hate seeing people get more hurt when unnecessary.
I get my 2021 with 12k miles for $11k with all the mods Wednesday. Is that a good deal?
Just earned a sub thanks to your husky lol, ive got one too amazing bike.
Thanks Steve are used to have a Honda XLR 650, I have a Kawasaki H2 now but I’m thinking real hard about getting one of those bad boys 701. Super Moto‘s are such fun bikes
+James Wilson nice! And in the case of the 701 it offers sumo fun, but that engine is big enough that it feels much like a torquey sport bike as well.
Do you know what it takes to put the enduro set of wheels on that bike? Are the brakes compatible with the enduro and the SM ?
Thanks! If my BMW ever explodes or gets stolen, this is going to be an option for me :) I was thinking the DRZ 400sm but only 5 gears and other things...this seems like a better option.
Yeah 701 is definitely better imo. Only thing the drz has over it is bigger dealer network and maybe more reliable because it such a down tuned ok'd style bike. But I've had pretty much zero issues out of mine in 2 years and I'm not easy on it at all.
@@MotardSteve I see...I just like the idea of no technology too..all depends on rider skill :)
Great video! Subscribed. Would love your thoughts on 701 vs SMC-R if you got some insight on the matter.
I made a video for that already actually. Just search and I bet you'll find it
Went in to the dealer on a used drz. Looked at a used 350 mile 690. Then brought to a husky 701 and here I am watching your video which i seen 2 years ago
Hey! Hell yeah bro! 😎
Gonna use it mainly for commutes but more fun then anything.
You deserve a lot more subscribers, audio quality is top notch , nice editing, keep it going, you got a new subscriber!
+Steven Tummers Thanks man. Really appreciate that. Was in a crap mood(computer troubles) but this comment made me smile. 😎
great bike, better review.
How many miles do you get from a full tank? Great vid by the way. Thanks for sharing.
Havent really calculated it but close to 110-120 I'd say
I’ve been looking for supermotos in my area for about 6 months and still haven’t found one. They just aren’t common where I live.... I’d have to drive 6 hours or more just to buy one apparently..
you're alright, i subed
There's a temp unlock they do when people test them out then they have to do a full unlock. But that's a shop error lol
Power!
This bike is good, but I just brought a KLX450R 2019 new, and I couldn’t be happier, Kawasaki or any Japanese made bikes are good and proven. That being said, ride whatever makes you happy.
price point is where im at with buying a supermoto. drz400's are a bit less expensive but its also a lot less bike. The husquavarna seems like an awesome bike!
Oh yeah the 701 is a whole lot of bike
When you say "one year, uno year, uno añoos" when you say the Spanish part you say like "one anus but un Spanish 😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Just subed motard obsessed.
Beautiful bike
Good video 👌👌
I'm thinking of getting a 701 supermoto and putting some dual sport tires and having a twisty road/gravel road/jeep trail road bike all in one. Probably get some medium sized storage on it too. Would it be good for that? I thought about a 701 enduro, but the seats an extra 2.5" tall and I think the 21" front wheel is overkill for what I ride. Your thoughts?
Yeah if you don't ride gnarly trails some Shinko 705's tires will do fine. And they last long on road too so great for a dual purpose use
Looks fun
Hi !
Can it be done something to make it silent like a 2 cylinders motor ?
Is it a good commuter?? As you said 7300 miles in a year that's what I do on my 125 lol. Everyday use??
😅🤣 Bro the wheelie at 3:50 you were fuggin' vertical
That's called 12 o clock 😜
What camera did you use to film this? The quality is awsome!!
Well drone is a Yuneec Breeze 4k, hand camera is a Canon Vixia rf700 and gopros are Hero 3+ and GoPro Hero(2014)
I'll stick with the DR650 and KLR 650 for now haha
Hi MotardSteve I have in mind to buy the 701 SM but the question I have is if to do 19 miles it would be very hard for the engine to go to 75m / h for 30min or if I would burn the engine doing that route, some alternative to the 701 to do that ?
Thanks in advance
no, everyday riding will have you frequently changing oil and a new set of tires
Hahaha that fail clip music killed me!!!!
That old school Simple Plan 😂
So I’m looking at purchasing a used 2019. Anything you can recommend I look at and inspect before purchasing? The biggest concern of mine with the bike is how well it was broken in. Is there anything I can look for as an indicator it was broken in properly?
Oil consumption would be what I'd look for but not sure how'd you see that without riding it a good bit
18:00 wow you got that bike for 1,200 BUCKS HOLY CRAP were do you shop
husky with 90's honda bikes price :O
What the hell, 1200 bucks... Here in netherlands they are new from €12500, secondhand €6000 if you’re lucky😂
It’s my DREAM MOTORBIKE
Logrst wheelie e er on the 701?
Debating one of these or the 2020 SMC-R. I'm leaning towards this but the KTMs are a bit newer for the same price where I am...
How does the rear gas tank effect the balance point of wheelies? Does it make wheelies easier because of the weight being in the back?
Think of guys doing manuals on a bmx bike. Having the weight back and low to the ground lowers your center of gravity which makes BP lower than most other bikes also it's less weight up front and up top like a traditional gas tank on a bike.
Great review Husqvarna makes a 450 SM now but I don’t think ifs street legal? I’m up for a new bike but Can’t make up my mind yet? I’m thinking DRZ
Nah the fs450 is track only but I know people that have gotten them legal.
drz are so boring
Is the speedometer based on the front wheel? I noticed your meter reading goes down when you wheelie.
+Spartan375x Yep. Haha sometimes I've got it down to single digit speeds 😂
"Officer, I wasn't going over the limit, you can see my speed on my GoPro's recording."
+Spartan375x Haha yes. 😂
Looks like it is calculated off the front ABS sensor. This is actually nice because it doesn't get screwed up when you change the gearing.
Your odometer probably reads low too!
Husqvarna, ktm, husberg are great motorcross bikes . 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Your wheelies have gotten better since your wheelie tutorial. Is that bike a lot easier to wheelie than a drz400sm?
Eh yes and no. The drz had less power which makes it easier to control but less power means it takes more to get up, plus the 701 has a good balance point due to the rear tank but that ride by wire throttle is super touchy
Would you recommend that a beginner get good on the drz. before upgrading to the 701? I used to ride a dr200 which I looped before getting a drz400sm and crf450l, I feel the drz400sm gets me to balance point easier without a struggle and body manipulation, so I can focus on learning balance point rather than getting up bike up.
So what do u think of the new 2019 Honda crf450l coming out I'm October? I'm stroglo thinking about grabbing one.
Idk its heavy for the power it puts out and the price on it is pretty steep for what you get. At that price I'd rather get a 501 or 500
I would like for you to show us your break-in of the 701 SM
I got that very video uploaded. 😁 Pretty sure it came out after this one.
Is it normal to get a wobble in the bars at motorway speeds ? I tried one yesterday and it was quite pronounced.
Hay steve. Your breaking advice was great. My 701 use no oil at 6100 miles now. Have you had the fuel pump & filter issue yet. My issue just started. Plugged filter & possible bad pump. Replaced with a slave's aftermarket.
I've had my fuel filters needing to be replaced around 10k but other than that the bike has been fine. Countershaft seal has a very very slow leak again but seems like it happens no matter how many times I replace it 😂
@@MotardSteve my counter shaft seal same deal. Just very slow. Still on origin seal. The ktm shop in Gilroy ca, told me that the stock filters have been breaking in two peaces, or their words exsploding. All filter kit sold out here. They said they had a run on fuel filters. I'm still having fueling issues. Will be dropping off at shop soon. I have changed my filter 3 times now & drained tank 3 time. Runs great for 30 miles, & then same shit, cuts out. Have done the fuel strain change each time. First couple of time I could see some very small white or silver particals, with a mingafin glass. I'll let you know what's up when I get it straighted out. Have a great rest of your weekend!! Talk at you later.
@@paulandreadis5781 how did your bike turn out?
@@Backend_Goat once changed the fuel pump & filters. Then kick stand safety switch. It was good for long time. Then I had to change the alternator. So far so good. Just tires, breaks, oil & gas now.
Have you tried the KTM 690 for comparison? I'm in the market and comparing a lightly used 17 690 to a brand new 18 701. Are the added balance shafts worth the extra $$ 2k+?
Imo yes. The new motor is smoother and less vibrations. It also makes 5 more hp and has 1000 rpm more of rev range. I've rode a 2016 701 that has the old 690 motor in it and vastly prefer my 17
How could this happen to me!!!!
😁😁😁😁
Wow, did not know about the ECU
I'd be interested in a video on your break in method
+dnorman Its coming this Friday evening or Saturday. 😁
The stock can is a catalytic converter. They are designed to hold heat to burn off exhaust particulates.
+LouCFur90 Yeah I remembered that afterwards. Still it gets insanely hot. Hotter than my stock dr650 exhaust would.
Wouldn't the catalytic converter by much closer to the motor? I thought it would be because the new exhaust is carbon fiber meaning it has high thermal conductivity
most off road bikes the cat is an all in one unit together with the muffler at the tail end of the exhaust.
Registering a ecu never heard of that damn thats pretty crazy
Lynx yea hopefully it stops people from tryi to rob the shit 😂
I am planing to buy this one as my first bike this year. So couple of questions. Do you have power commander installed since i see many people get it as a package with slip-on exhaust and air filter? And what is v-max with your current rings? Also, did you fiddle with the suspension or you left it stock? Last one i ask because i see people saying its too soft stock and i am 108kg dude and i assume suspension doesn't behave the same as with someone who is 80kg or something.
+QuotidianHr we weigh about the same and I've left the clickers dead in the middle no matter if I'm off road or on road. The suspension just works amazing in general.
No power commander but I have euro map, twin air filter, and uncorked pipe. Some people buy the akra tuning kit, but imo the aura pipe is overpriced and I've seen quite a few explode on the track with 701's. I'd go arrow, Leo Vince, or GPR.
I assume you're talking about a compression test, actually haven't did one, but I'm curious to see now.
I was thinking also about Leo or GPR, white one looks beautiful. Akrapovic is overpriced and it seems to me they don't sound as good as they did before. In any case, thanks for reply, every info is very valuable to me at this point...:)
+QuotidianHr Yeah only downside is you'll have a yard time finding the GPR with the Albus(white) finish, they do indeed look really nice though.
The dealer had to "Unlock" my 2017 KTM 250SXF. That is correct. Glad my dealer knew it had to be done.
Yeah huge pain if they forget 😑
How does it compare to maintenance and riding to te510 or te449 for regular type of riding around the town ?
Not familiar with those models but I'd say probably better. They newer Huskies are definitely more reliable than the old ones.
Lol my 690 crapped out @ 8k, I babies the shit out of it. Changed oil every 3k with valve check. Broke my heart.
I have a 2018 701 enduro and I want a slip on exhaust. Would I need a powercommander or I can run with just a slip on with everything else being stock? I heard people saying that the bikes run lean from factory. I just want to be sure my bike will be reliable in the long run.
Mine just has a euro map and slipon. My plugs are the perfect color. You'll be fine. Tge ecu can compensate for the change with a slip on because the stick o2 sensor can still read in the header pipe
The hell with turn signals. Hand signals all day!
I wonder what the top speed would be if you went the other way with the gearing. JW
since I can't really find a clear video I might as well ask it here in the hopes of getting to know some more. Can someone explain the biggest difference in the 501 and 701. I know the cc but like what about service intervals and how the throttle feels. I want to know some more stuff because I can buy the 501 when im 20 but for the 701 it is 21 because it goes over the 35kw limit of the a2 license so would have to wait for the full A license which is 21 in the Netherlands. So should I wait a year or go for the 501. I want a bike that doesn't need that much maintenance but also feels good to ride so can the 501 provide that as well? thanks in advance for any help!
They're both comparable with intervals so it comes down to this 701 is better at street and all around riding, 501 will do street well enough, but will shine offroad
thank you for the quick response! so if I will mostly just ride around town for fun and sometimes maybe to work or offroad a bit the 701 would be the better one right?
In my opinion yeah. 701 is the more versatile bike of the two
MotardSteve well I guess ill wait the extra year then (gives me more time to save up anyway 😂) thank you for the help
@@cookie_licker1284 no problem man. Happy to help
For maintenance on that bike do you have to do like valve checks on it????
Only ever 6200 miles. My first check wasnt even close to needing an adjustment.
whats the buying process like because im saving up for one and i was wondering if i could just show up with all the money
+BLACKOUT14138 You can definitely do that. You can put down a 500 deposit for them to hold the bike for a week or two if needed and you can show up with the $$$ and pay what's left, keep in mind though the price on dealer sites don't include sales tax, or any dealership setup/freight costs, so expect to pay a little more than the quoted price. I went through my credit union with a very tiny interest rate to build up my credit score which has worked awesomely so far.
Pretty much what I did was called em up, got an emailed Bill of Sale/Buy order, took that to my bank, payed my deposit to the bank( about 25%) and then went and picked the bike up the next day.
I'm sure buying straight out is much simpler.
MotardSteve ok thanks
Does your front brake feel like it’s wavy a little. I’ve talked to a few 701 owners and they experience the same feeling. Some say it’s got to do with the ABS
I notice a kinda pulse at low speed when I'm barely on the brake but other than that not really.
MotardSteve for sure, mine is sort of bad. Might take it to get checked then.
Bro. Got the same fox sticker in the same spot. Just on my right side. Theiving ideas lol i got a 501 though.
Great minds think alike 😎
@motardsteve i just bought the 2019 sm version but because i am not tall the shop said they gonna lower it 3 cm , will that affect the riding ability of the bike ??
I mean probably not a bunch but I'd think it will probably make the turn in a tad more twitcher but like I said I doubt it will be much of a huge difference
@@MotardSteve yeah i hope its not going to have a huge diffrence . Going to normandy this summer with the bike so i hope it will be comfortable to because of the lowering its going to be stiffer
sweet bike!
the 701 is also double the price of the DRZ/DR ;)
+woolchaff Yeah but in a way it's worth it. The power is just ridiculous, but I still have a live for the DR just gecause it was a proven tank and never let me down once.(701 hasn't yet, but time will tell.)
It’s also double the fun trust me
i hope so!
the DR is my first bike, just got it last year so I think it is perfect for me for now. KTM/huskey dealers are few and far between where I live but there is a Suzuki dealer in the small town I live in.
I am about to purchase a 2018 to use as a daily commuter, but I had a few concerns that I haven't really been able to find answers for. I like to have more low-end torque as opposed to speed, but my commute is a 20min drive on the interstate (70mph). With the sprocket swap that you did, are you comfortable going 75-80mph for long distances, or do you feel as though that would be putting a lot of wear on the motor and it would be revving high? Thanks
70 yeah no problem you won't hit the limiter until 105 ish with my gearing if you want a little more top end just swap a 15 tooth on the front sprocket and call it a day. I would still hold about 75-80 with that setup. I only really do state highways which around here are only 55mph so my gearing works perfect. I could do the interstate(I sometimes do) but I just prefer not to because it's boring and sketchy on a sumo.
@@MotardSteve thank you so much for the reply, I appreciate it! Keep up the awesome content

You should do a comparison Supermoto vs sport bike
+derMtn That would be a great video idea because the 701 has pretty much a sport bije engine in it(sane motor as new ktm 690 Dukes) Thanks for the idea.
yeah the engine is fine, but it is a 1 cylinder, and sportbikes have comfortable high rpm 3-4 cylinders
I had a 2007 DRZ 400 SM, it was a fun bike but had no power. I've had GSXR's and still miss my supermoto more. Looking to buy a 701. I'm a intermediate rider, should I check out the 501 as well as the 701? I'm just a weekend crusier.
501 is good if you plan to ride in the dirt a good bit, if not 701 is better for street
Really cool I want this as my first bike! I've been seeing reviews and just love the husqvarna 701. I'm actually in the process of selling my car of 5 years.. I've never really ridin bikes before but got the bug since watching videos I'm pretty set on getting one..what can u tell me about this and how do I go about starting this endeavor? I don't really have any friends that ride or have bikes but want to learn ..i kno the basics about bikes just need the experience...
My dream bike... Aldo i will never have the money for one...
I'm about to pull a trigger on a 2017 701 with both wheelsets, it has 16k miles tho, is it a lot? Buying it for 4.7k usd
Nah I'd jump on that.
I had a Ktm smc-r 690 which got stolen after only 2 months now a year later I think I'll buy the 701, it is time for me to get back on the street
Damn... that sucks. How did they steal it?
What GPR Exhaust do you use bro? Any link? thx!
As far as I know they dont make the rade version anymore but theres a street legal one still. It's called a GPR Evo with "Poppy" finish
Got me!
What's the gearing front and back sprocket :)?
Stock it's 16/42 I have 15/46
