The absolute joy of the 2600, in all it’s forms, is that it always feels like an exploration. No matter how long you’ve been playing with synths, which for me is 30 years, the complex interplay of the modules as you start to go deeper is always surprising, often confusing, but constantly interesting. The ability to run the filter output alongside the VCA output into the mixer is one thing that seems simple, but can add so much complexity to your sounds.
wow .. this is the best 2600 tutorial i have seen. unlike many other videos that just show one fancy patch after another, you actually explain the signal path and how each section works and affects the signal and the sound. well done, thanks! :)
So many great tips Ziv. I hadn't grasped that ring mods could work as a VCA until you did it with the Syntrx and there were some ace uses here. There's always things to learn with the 2600 and I got a dozen great tips here and I thought I knew the thing! Ha.
Excellent work, really appreciate how deep your grasp of everything is, really benefits us all.
Thanks very much Alex! I absolutely LOVED your video
@@loopop I completely second Alex with this. Ol' Orangey has been in my life for over 40 years but this video has changed the game. I learnt so much new stuff (especially about the sneaky extra VCA too) so THANK YOU. Amazing work Ziv, I think this the definitive 2600 deep dive video!
@@-CALC- thanks very much - it means a lot coming from you! ❤
Any comparisons between the Korg and the Behringer hardware versions? The Arturia software 2600 costs five times what I paid for the Behringer, and the Behringer was, adjusting from 1974 dollars, 5% of the far less featured original. Yes I have both the Behringer 2600s, love them both.
Interesting....
My PAiA kit 4710 was sold as Ring Modulator/Amp...
In the 70's 😒😉
Your approach of actually showing the specrum and other details as you go on patching is really useful. Thanks for making that extra effort, it totally worths it!
Thanks for this great video, some excellent tips. I will try them this weekend on my trusty 1973 2600, as well as the Arturia 2600. The Arp 2600 is a truly inspirational instrument; Korg and Behringer have both been marvellous in reviving it for a new generation of knob (and slider) twiddlers.
Your sir are awesome!!! So great listening to you and trying out these patches. Thanks so much for the masterclass.
Very comprehensive walkthrough showing some of the less obvious ways to use this nice synth (BARP owner myself). Especially that the ring mod could be used as a VCA was an eye opener. Thank you for all the tips!
An outstanding vid as always… I really appreciate you running through all the cool things you can do with this.
Wow what a treat! i got the B2600 and it's such an amazing synth! Thanks a lot.
When you talk about Behringer versions there is no reaction from the god almighty vintage owners 😂.
What a wonderful presentation, Ziv! You are such an authority. This is the best video you've done so far. :-)
Loving this tutorial having just purchased an ARP2600M. What a wonderful instrument, and this tutorial is really helping me understand what I just bought and also some wider concepts of synthesis I have overlooked. Thank you Mr Loopop.
Awesome presentation. Thanks
Been looking forward to your take on the 2600 remakes, thanks for all of this great pedagogy!
Excellent video! Lots of patches and ideas to try out. Thank you.
Your video includes some real gem tips. Excellent work!
I am so glad to have found this video teaching practical applications of this classic synth. .
The music you're playing in the outro is fantastics... Gives me chills...
Of course I think it's great that Korg remade this synth, but seeing this I'm again reminded of my wish to see Korg make modules for Eurorack. But thanks again for patches and inspirations. It's the outro that makes me most impressed with this thing.
i got one, and haven't regretted it for a second. thanks for these great ideas!
@SYNTHPUNK but that's not the same thing. A 2600 and a Matrixbrute and a Pro3 are totally different synths in so many ways, how to compare? I mean, a 2600 doesn't have presets or a mod matrix or effects (other than reverb). Compare a Hydrasynth to a Summit, Fantom to a Kronos, Hammond to a Viscount, Minimoog to a Poly D, that's a useful comparison. Not this. Just my opinion, not trying to argue...
As usual Loopop comes up with the most interesting ideas applicable to any modular system. I own a original 2600 and a TTSH. The TTSH is thinner but still nice. The original just clobbers the speakers. That preamp is one of the best distortion devices even if it is very simple. Amazing machine, stomps on any vst. We need more videos like this
routing the saw through the pre amp is straight up YEEZUS. I have the behringer version, thanks for this vid!
This video was a very useful tutorial for my new ARP 2600 FS!
And again, really useful tips, will use on my BARP 2600
Great video Ziv. I had great fun back in the 1970s playing with the original of this and it’s associated sequencer. I never owned one but had access to one, I always found the oscillators more stable than either Moog or EMS. I have the Behringer version of the 2600 which gets a lot of use.
Is the behinger version any good?
@@tuxedo1557 Yes excellent. As far as the sound goes it’s not quite the same as the original but very close, however, it has some very useful additions that the original never had. Worth buying.
On my list. Thank you Loopop!
got a chance to finally play this in my local synth shop, very interesting sounds can be made on this!
Good stuff! Following along on my Behringer, I got tripped up on the "snappy trig envelope" . Finally realized the trig jack near the AR section is trig "IN" so I needed to use the trig out jack to the far left on the Behringer. Digging the preamp OD with the FM sweep. Inspiring ideas, Thanks!
Thanks and yes I heard Behringer swapped those around a bit
I’ve always wondered why ARP put the outs where they did. It makes more sense the way Behringer did it.
Did you try the bitcrushing patch from the six minute mark of this video on your Behringer yet? I am wondering how it sounds on the Behringer compared to the Korg?
Great job on explaining the many functions! At the end of the video you played a very cool-sounding pattern and I would like to be able to do, as I am a newbie! Thank you!
A simple switch like on the 2600 is a very basic thing, but it allows SOoo many new possibilities. I found this out when i picked up a beautiful Instruo switch for my Eurorack setup. Once you start patching with the switch you’ll find out, being able to switch between two different states is way more useful than it would seem!
i built a TTSH during lockdown so this is gold! thanks
man thank you for this demo. learned a lot.
Love that intro jam!
I love your very structured videos
The gentle delivery of LoopPop always rings with the LockPickingLawyer 😃
An analog monster review ))) Good one! Thank you.
Ok, great further insight. I saved this 2600 vid for last because i knew it would be next level. i got the behringer on sale this last weekend and this vid makes me appreciate the LFO module which looks like it was moved from the original keyboard, and ways to create another, once that one is used. I am also thankful that the BARP has color coding and lights. i have eyestrain from looking at the black-on-black face of that korg for a half of an hour trying to see what you were doing. FWIW, the original keystep is decent for controlling the BARP. (PS, i made a ghetto patch cable splitter from a stereo RCA,F->1/8",M adapter and 2 single RCA,F->1/8",M mono adapters. evidently the ring and sleeve both touch the contact in the 3.5mm synth sockets)
Great patching! 🖤
🙌🏻🙏🏻
Definitely on my wish list the remake of the 2600 is a must for synth lovers- movie soundtracks and pioneers in electronic music recorded with it. Along with an MS20 full size. Great review!
Thanx for all the Nice and Informative Videos ! i have subscripted you because u are allways the Best Source for Informations on new Hardware Gear ! I Love to see that u not only make a Deep Review but also your Videos a good Tutorials ! Please Continue this style of Videos - GREAT STUFF !!!
There's something magical about this synth.
One giant sweet spot
The Analog Bitcrusher sounds like the Hyperdrive of Elite on Atari ST. Thanks for the great review!
TRUE !
I have the full size version and this sounds every bit as good... some great tips I never knew about btw!
@Dandini I doubt it. I think it will always have a bit of a draw for many people.
It’s almost as if Ziv knows what he’s doing ! 😃
@@kirkegodfrey414 tell me about it! The ARP2600 is admittedly complicated for me but I've always wanted one since I got into synths in the 1980s. Videos like this help a lot!
Doesn‘t the full size sound better?
@@el_dani I would guess they sound the same
Great tips, as usual.
Thank you very much, helps a lot. I am a new subscriber. 😎
you are a total life saver. couldn't figure out how to patch my mod wheel to the b2600 lfo as my controller does not have cv out. I thought, I bet loopop can tell me, and sure enough, you did it here. Your stuff is totally invaluable, thank you!
Great demo review. I really want one, hope it's not too expensive.
Sounds delicious 😋
Just like the original one !
looks really nice
The battleship look is amazing.
Superb Video! I was wondering if there is velocity to filter cut off / amp possible? I d like to control the Filter frequency with velocity. Thanks, Roland
That sound at 9:10!! When the bass kicks in! WOOOHAAA!!
It looks and sounds 👌 😍 🔥.
If I get another synth , I will divorce myself.
Great video as usual.
Longtime fan of the channel
Brilliant exploration
now that I have a Behringer I appreciate this video even more so! 👌 Excellent!!
Any tricks/caveats cross-patching with Eurorack?
Really killer demo as usual but really extra special cools
I have the TTSH. What would be the chance of you showing us please how to get that brassy lead sound that JMJ used in Oxygene part 4?
Did i miss the part where you can set last note priority on the Arp mini? Hope it’s possible.
That looks like it would be a great addition to my sub 37.
I used to play an original 2600..Fun instrument..Sample and hold was great to do...Do the bog patch..jam on.
I got the Blue Marvin and like it much. But what is your opinion against the originals?
Using the delay processor to implement portamento is neat but I want to note that the 2600M also implements portamento using MIDI. If you have a midi controller capable of assigning a knob to CC 5, that's your portamento time, and CC 65 is portamento on/off.
With portamento enabled, the 2600M will ramp the keyboard control voltage from note-to-note at a rate corresponding to the portamento time values received from MIDI or USB.
This approach requires less patching and leaves the lag processor free for other uses.
The 2600 is a great piece of gear, but i hope that Korg will do again the full size
Seriously. This is a toy. You're missing so much of the tones with those tiny sliders.
@@machinelanguage5108 not only. The keyboard looks really cheap. What a shame
@@sermax70 yeah that KB looks crappy. It's super annoying the way the 2600 FS was HYPED UP far beyond what would end up being supplied. It was being promoted everywhere, every website on the planet had an article about the "second coming," yet when it launched, it sold out immediately. I got on the order list and had to wait weeks (months? I can't remember - it was a long time) only to find out I couldn't get one. Sucks. This is no substitute, especially at that price!
Also bit crush an audio noise input and get super chunky Commodore 64 (Sid chip) noise sounds! You know, the sound of the video game tank crashing into the wall.
If anyone gets confused by the labelling on the S&H / Switch module. It’s wrong. They changed it on the last revision of the 2600 in the 70s.
When is this shipping in the US?
My Pre-Order was canceled of the Korg 2600 fs
Does anyone know when these will be available? Lots of conflicting or outdated presale data on websites - from what I can find, nobody seems to have one yet except for youtube superstars
what's that waveform and spectrum display you have at the top of the ARP?
Lovely tutorial! i would love to learn more about modulating the VCF with lfo. By the looks of it, its not even possible with the KARP 2600.
I have an original Arp 2600, and the "snappy trig envelope" doesn't seem to work.
does anybody know which ones do and don't work with the behringer one? thanks
Woh ! Synthgasm.
I can't seem to duplicate your Patch Randomizer on the Behringer 2600. You mentioned it was a Trig "out" but is labeled as Trig "in" on the Behringer. Obviously this is not the 2600 version you are working with but I'm curious if any other readers who own a Behringer 2600 share my trouble.
sounds juicy yet nutritious. seems similar in concept & execution to the MS20m - got it where it counts, but everything around it is chintzy. the case and keyboard look like dollar store closeouts, and the unit looks to have the 20m’s goofy molded jacks (about midway through the vid, maybe i’m wrong).
I have problems with those micro keyboards I am with you on this one I would have bought it by now if it was a full size synth,,,
@@floatershaw it would also cost a lot more than this synth! Full size synth equals full size price! 😂
I’ve waited more than a year for my synth and still waiting. I live in Australia. Korg synths are the best! Roland is so overrated. I purchased the Modwave and it is amazing!
MS20M is the module, which is ultra nice. You're thinking of the Mini.
@@crolodon8024 yes, definitely what i meant - thank you!
great review as always - thank you! I was curious what you thought of the keybed feel of the microkey ? I was interested in getting something small, light, and serviceable that has more keys than the keystep
I know you touched a little on it ~ 430 but any info on the feel itself would be super helpful
Thanks! The feel is ok but I would go with the keystep 37 not because it has a better feel - same number of keys - but also has an arp, sequencer and a few other features. Of course it does cost more :/
Thank you
Is fantastic very, very, very great sound wow
Ooooooh yesss come Korg ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This thing sounds insanely good.
Are the sliders the same width as the full size sliders?
Hi man, I love the sounds in duo mode... When you want to play two notes do you need to change the settings from Default to Original @20:30? Thanks!
I mean in the Voice Assign Mode Settings. Thanks!
I’m confused - when is this available?
Damn sweet. I have ordered one, but the delivery date is in March next year....
Hope all is well. Really missed you this week.
Thanks! All's well and fun stuff coming - sometimes it just takes a bit longer :)
Hello , love your videos 💛 dave smith tempest video would be amazing 😻
Does this play nicely with Eurorack? Could I use individual parts of it (EG, LFO, etc.) as though they were Eurorack modules with other modules outside the 2600?
I didn't test this - you can in a limited way - please see the connectivity section in the video and have a look at the mod matrix in the manual
@loopop what do you use to visualize wave pattern and spectrum in your videos? is it software on your laptop or plugged in between the synth outputs and speakers?
Hi, I use MOscilloscope and MAnalyzer by a company called Melda - they’re free with some limitations in the MFreeFXBundle. Occasionally I’ll use scopes by VCV
@@loopop awesome thanks!
I can really imagine John Carpetners The Thing intro melody performed on this.
Have I been misunderstanding what "A/C coupled ring modulator" means? I thought it meant "four-quadrant multiplication", as opposed to a normal VCA - in other words, I thought that a "D/C coupled ring modulator" was simply a VCA and the "DC coupled" switch on synths (including the VCS3 as well, I believe?) was a convenience to convert the ring mod into a VCA for normal use.. After watching this and reading some comments, I'm wondering whether "A/C coupled" literally means what it says, i.e. D/C signal components are filtered out of the modulator using a capacitor. Is this actually the right definition? Is a ring modulator in fact always a four-quadrant multiplier, even in D/C-coupled mode? (Bit of a verbose question, sorry!)
What is your favorite cheap synth? I’ve seen a few in the backgrounds of your videos and in your demos, but do you have a favorite?
No particular one - I probably have a few favorites, ones that bring something unique to the table, but really you should go with what sounds best to you and inspires you to create
R2-D2!
'An infinite number of sweet spots'
So true. So true.
Nice review as always. Can you tell us if the nuts on the jacks are plastic or metal? Every thread on the internet has devolved into people speculating if the nuts are plastic or metal.
you know I have no idea and the thought never crossed my mind during my entire time with this so either I'm missing something really big or the threads are
@@loopop Thanks! It was worth a shot to change the conversations back to the sound and other qualities. I appreciate you taking the time to respond :)
Is this as good as or better than the one made by Behringer? Thanks.
This is wisdom
Amazing
Great video! What software do you use for the oscilloscope/spectrum analyzer?
Melda
Thanks indeed scopes by Melda
bravo !!!
I can't find it for sale yet (11/12), but my god, please tell me it will be available without the keyboard and the stupid luggage....
According to Korg, the cheapo keyboard and ridiculous suitcase will only be included in the first batch sold.
I'm sure you've been asked this a million times before, but I feel like that oscilloscope would be so useful to me when I play around with my machines. Which app/device are you using for your oscilloscope, and how to you patch it to perform this way? Thanks for another great video!
Hi, I use MOscilloscope and MAnalyzer by a company called Melda - they’re free with some limitations in the MFreeFXBundle. Occasionally I’ll use scopes by VCV
