  • I got this Pioneer receiver for next to nothing. All it needed was a little help to get back to into good shape.
    The SX-424 isn't a show stopper, but it has some charm. 12Wpc is definitely nothing to brag about, but with some reasonably sized speakers it does a good job. It's not replacing my Yamaha RX-V365 anytime soon though.

    Wire wrap is a thing. Yes, there's a machine. The corners of the posts bite into the metal of the wire (if it's done with the proper amount of tension), which provides a very good, crimp-like electrical connection, as well as physical sturdiness.

    Bought one of these in '79 - '80 at a flea market. Someone had tried to repair the amplifier section and screwed up burning a huge hole in the PCB. My neighbor and I were able to properly repair and I used it til the early '90s. I gave it away but always loved it. Before my son went to college I found another for him, we went through it and paired it with a set of B&W speakers. Sounded amazing. He still has it. I currently have a Pioneer SX-980 that I will be recapping soon.

      I am trying to learn electronics I have a 424 that I have had for years I got it back in the early 80s at a pawn shop after I had my house broke into and lost my stereo system I had a ken wood amp with Kliphs Hersey speakers sorry spelled that wrong anyway I want to recap the whole receiver to learn but I see the main board you cannot get out with out taking the string off. Any ideas ? I never restring and it looks awful to do any advice they are not worth much so not worried about screwing it up.

    Those wires wrapped around posts ARE done with a wire wrapping tool or machine. I have hand wire-wrapped thousands of those on backplanes. The posts and wire were much smaller, but the concept is the same. A large machine is used to install the wires on a large, complex backplane, but I have made many, many hand modifications after the manufacturing process and I have also hand wrapped complete smaller backplanes for engineering models (perhaps 800 to 1000 wires). The hand wrapping tools were mostly battery operated and made by Gardner-Denver, but I have also hand wrapped using completely manual tools on smaller jobs.

  • @dbozan99

    Those wrapped wires are something that was quite popular back in the day, especially for prototyping. Look up Wire Wrapping on Wikipedia.

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  Před 6 lety +11

      I'm familiar with it as a prototyping technique but I had never looked into it other than that. I'm surprised that they would use it in a product, but if it was good enough for space travel then it's good enough for a radio I guess.

      AkBKukU check out the Macintosh Prototypes article on folklore.org for a fun read on wire wrapped madness. Check out the other articles while you're there too, it's good stuff.

      There is a little hand tool that looks a lot like one of those jeweler's screwdrivers which lets you tightly wrap wire around the posts. It makes a surprisingly secure connection.
      If you ever get the opportunity to open an old Pioneer RT-909 Reel-to-Reel player, nearly every wire is routed and wrapped on posts between boards.

    • @Royalbigness
      @Royalbigness Před 4 lety +2

      Wire wrapping was important for a proper connection as opposed to just soldering on as it provided a gas tight connection for better signal transmission. The Audio engineers knew their stuff don't worry.

    I can’t be the only one posting on year old videos...
    I knew that was a variable capacitor from watching Mr Carlson’s Lab. I know vacuum tubes aren’t interesting to everyone, some argue anyone, but my Grandpa fixed radios in the Philippines during WW2 and I was curious... I still watch his channel.
    I did wirewound prototyping in EE school circa 2000 on perfboard... maybe my professors were old school but when you only need 10 and pcbs were $35 each. We built the circuitry for the automatic apiary feeders on top of the biology building. They do/did make a tool for it, looks like a nut driver with a slit on the side of the socket.

  • @Royalbigness
    @Royalbigness Před 4 lety +1

    Those speaker terminals are very typical on those very early 70s Pioneer SX receivers.
    My SX1000TW also has the socket type arrangement too. They usually come with the plugs, but sometimes people lose them and you either have to make your own or just buy replacements.
    Yours is also an export model with the multi tap voltage selector.. Nice !

  • @donmorton4597
    @donmorton4597 Před 4 lety

    The face plate and knobs can be soaked in warm dish water and then use an old tooth brush to agitate the crud out of the grooves. The face plate can then be followed up with some metal polish. The silk screen is safe, it won't rub off.
    Then it will look amazing !

  • @martyjewell5683
    @martyjewell5683 Před 2 lety +1

    Yup, speaker connection on the Pioneer SX 20 series was a dumb idea. Otherwise this is a great den or small room receiver. Lotsa good features; center channel tune meter, mic input and tape loop, four speaker (4 ohm capable), stereo/mono and loudness control. I use an SX-434 in my kitchen system and it powers a Nakamichi BX-1 cassette deck and Boston Acoustics A-40 speakers. Ain't gotta spend a bunch of dough for good sound. Nice video, very interesting.

      @@VidweII- almost. I set up the kitchen hifi so as not to interfere with my wife working from home during Covid. She took over the dinning room as her office so I couldn't play the "big stereo". I can get pretty loud in the kitchen and it don't bug her. Have a Sanyo C-4 boombox up stairs in the den, a Highwave six band radio in the cellar, a portable Grundig YB-400PE table radio in the kitchen and a Panasonic boombox for the yard or front porch. Still have a Sony Walkman WM-4 packed away. And I have a waterproof (Pollenex Splash Dance AM/FM) portable radio in the bathroom so I can shower with Zappa.

      @eduardoavila646 Před 6 lety +1

      Mr.smash 69 Wow.. I really dont know who told me that, but i had the information that in the Us, am radios were dead long ago (as it is here too), but fm died too. And the radio stations were 100% online using internet. Same for analog tvs, that died recently here in Brazil.

    • @eduardoavila646
      @eduardoavila646 Před 6 lety

      Ryan Stenz Officially? Or homemade radios? Here in Brazil we dont have big am radios anymore (i think), is been a long time since i saw a am-fm radio. There are only fm radios here now being manufactured and selled

    • @Dant2142
      @Dant2142 Před 6 lety +5

      Nope, official radios. Even brand new cars have stereos with built-in AM tuners. There's only a handful of AM stations left, but those that are around remain mostly because of the FCC's arguably backwards regulations on transmit power. The FCC allows an AM station that's had a license for 50+ years to transmit at high enough power to just about cover the continental US. FM regulation usually limits their transmit power to a 100-200Km radius, again depending on the age of the station's license.
