Today we hopped across the border to Mainland China! We took the Metro to Mainland China via Lok Ma Chau in Hong Kong where we crossed the border to Shenzhen.
We had a quick pit shop in Shenzhen, then had our first bullet train experience! Our train was fairly short (~3 hours) but we got to see some epic scenery en-route.
Finally, we make it to Guilin, hop on a local bus and settle into our accommodation for the night.

Train nerd here. Hope this helps:
The Shanghai Maglev is currently the fastest commercial train in the world. However, be aware that it only runs at top speed (430km/h) for a few trains in the mornings and afternoons. czcams.com/video/Ygo9fQ_qKCE/video.html
The Beijing-Shanghai HSR line has Fuxing trains that are currently the second fastest commercial train service in the world, running at 350km/h. The ones between Beijing and Shanghai that runs around 4.5 hours are Fuxing trains (G1, G3, etc). czcams.com/video/nIRCaupQU9k/video.html
The Kunming-Beijing overnight sleeper train features the new capsule-style sleeper trains. The train number is D930/D939. czcams.com/video/DAOYz8FcDiQ/video.html
The Qinghai-Tibet railway is a conventional railway, but it's the highest railway in the world and offers spectacular sceneries along the way. There are trains to Lhasa from several major cities. But this trip itself requires a lot of planning and costs a lot of time and money. czcams.com/video/xvU3UghOhCY/video.html
If you want some more traditional services, there are also slow trains (both seating and various levels of sleeper services) running on conventional tracks which cost significantly less than high-speed trains. czcams.com/video/_8ydg-Z-xc8/video.html
One of the most interesting slow train lines is Guiyang-Kunming line, which offers spectacular views but also passes through some of China's most remote and least developed areas. The line has a special place in many of China's railfans. However, I don't know if there are still passenger services running through the line today as it is undergoing some construction recently. This is a very old video about the line: czcams.com/video/P2mxThWOXC0/video.html
You can't hit all the lines above, but if you leave Tibet to another trip, you can hit all the others by doing this:
      - Guilin to Guiyang on whatever train you choose
      - Guiyang to Kunming on Guiyang-Kunming slow train
      - Kunming to Beijing on overnight high-speed sleeper
      - Beijing to Shanghai on Fuxing train
      - Shanghai Maglev
This way you also will also have toured around many different regions of China.
Also, you may already have done this: trip.com is a very convenient place for tourists and expats to book train tickets in China. They also offer to deliver the tickets I think. Also, all tickets in China can be refunded for a small fee (5% to 20% depending on the timing) and you get one free change even if you miss the train and it's your fault.

Try the soft sleeper on one of those "green skin" slow trains. If you are lucky you could get a whole cabin for yourself for hours. It's throw back time and feels very nostalgic and romantic. And it's no more expensive than a second HSR seat.
Also I propose you trying some less known places where you don't feel you are one of the animals of a giant human zoo LOL.

You use Canon G7X camera, don't you? How is its voice quality? Is external mic necessary?

    • @RobandJenny
      @RobandJenny  Před 5 lety +1

Yeah we use it! It's great! Does everything beginners like us want. The external mic input on the new model would be a nice to have, but to be honest it isn't really worth it most of the time. Be careful with not speaking in very noisy places and it's fine. We have a "MicroMuff" which is a god send for blocking out wind. Even if we had the mark iii we probably wouldn't have started with an external mic as it adds to the bulk and "faff" which isn't something you need when first getting used to filming yourself. Hope that helps! 😀😀
