I bought this not working Ryobi NiCd screwdriver without a charger. It is 3,6v NiCd so I converted it to 4.2v Li-Ion with charge control BMS. I also converted the light bulb to LED.
With the shorted cell, try charging a large cap and connecting across the battery. It may have formed a whisker between the plates, they had a habit of doing this if charged on their sides.
