seriously though, this was the first video I had in mind when creating this channel. it's been a long long time in the works and now that it's finally done, I had second thoughts about posting initially. I'm not particularly fond of showing my vulnerabilities that easily, as I doubt anyone is, and sharing to where it's accessible to literally everyone on this platform is more than a bit scary.
but I have also wanted to get this experience off my chest for a long time. uni applications weighed down on me so much during the process, and in the months after finding out the results as well. I felt like a total disappointment - to my family, to all who have supported me and my academic career, and to myself most of all.
first, thinking on it, I definitely didn't put enough work and preparation into my application and into myself as I could have during that time. I am absolutely at fault here, but I choose not to blame myself too harshly for that. circumstances I faced then aligned to make high school tough in many ways, though sometimes that happens - that's life, and the only thing I can do is learn from it and move forwards.
which is why I'm making this video - I'm letting go of the negative feelings surrounding this event. this is a thing that happened, and it's been a year, and I'm learning from it and moving on!
and for you too; if you're in the same or similar situation, I feel ya.
    really, I do.
you're thinking and going through a lot, - but let me just tell you - life will move on. there are so many other bright, good things to see and explore. college is just college, and there's so much more beyond that.
this was literally almost the worst case scenario for me a year ago, and it happened, and I'm still living life and exploring so much! I am thankful for this experience though, and for all that it's taught me.
I hope you can get something from this video too, and as always,
    thanks for being here :)

This is so real. Even though i didn’t get into my dream school(UPenn), I got into some really good universities like Gtown, Tufts, and Swarthmore, but i wasn’t able to pay because of the financial aid and I’m going to one of my target schools. As a 55yo father of identical twins who will be applying to schools this summer, I am scared to death hoping my kids can make it through the college application and decision process unscathed 😮. I think even the strongest most dedicated candidates could have had similar results as you. I think the issue was really that you only applied to HIGHLY HIGHLY selective schools. If you could have applied to more it would have been fine- you could’ve added more targets, safeties etc. I don’t think it’s about you not doing enough, I think it was your strategy and your counselor should’ve advised you to add more safeties

I even got with non-profits!. But still, people around me make me feel like everything I do is wrong and I am just so tired. My son got into WashU in St. Louis last year. I was extremely surprised to see how comparative college admission has become over the years. Not only my son had put enormous amount of efforts, but also costed a lot of money too. I only went to the state schools for undergrad and dental school back in 90s. One of my classmates back in dental school told me her boyfriend didn't do well in high school so he ended up going to a community college. From there, he began working harder and transferred to a 4-year college. He ended up getting Ph.D from MIT. So you might have a slow and late start but there are plenty of time and opportunities to excel. Just require a lot of persistent work for a long time.

He was a good student but not those brainiac types. I wish he tried for a ‘reach’ school just to see if it was possible but in the end he made the correct choice getting the scholarship, school and major he wanted. It’s not a brand name school but he is proud to be there. I’m a very high achieving rising high school senior who currently has absolutely no idea what to do for college. I PROBABLY have the stats to get into at least one ivy or other prestigious university, but honestly I’m having trouble justifying paying a quarter million dollars to go to one when I could go to a state school for free (I got national merit in Texas). Seeing the people one grade above me get into all the big schools and bragging about it on instagram makes me a bit nervous, like maybe I have to get into one of these to be worth something. It also just feels like a waste to work so hard in high school just to go to a college that I probably could have gotten into by coasting. I feel like many of these schools are useful for boosting self esteem like you said, but not much else; you can get a good education almost anywhere, and you can get connections (if you work hard enough) almost anywhere. Regardless, being in a friend group of Asians who think that a “good college” is all that matters puts a lot of pressure on me to conform. In my opinion, it takes a lot of maturity to look away from the ivies as a successful student, and even if you didn’t do it by choice (ie you got rejected), it could end up helping you in the end.
To anyone who read this far: we all feel it, we can get through this together. A bunch of old guys who run a expensive country club school should not determine your self worth 🫶

Take it from an extremely underachieved person who is an academic failure:
I know I could have gone Ivy if I had really applied myself, but I didn't. You know that about yourself too, right? Ivy is only Ivy because of sports. Prestigious schools partner with state Unies ell the time on vital research. Do well at a state Uni and try for grad school. At the end of the day, if you have what it takes to contribute to your school, whichever school you go to, it will be you writing the papers, it will be you making your school look good.

I’ve never thought of my moles as more than just part of my face haha 😄 they’re part of me and I like them because they’re unique « beauty marks », as some people call them. Other spins I’ve heard on moles are constellation patterns on one’s face, or marks where a lover kissed you in a past life (that ones from insta reels lol)🫣 but I hope that helped in some small way and thank you for being here!
