- Dr. Kate Truitt explains that gratitude engages different brain areas that are really important for feelings of well-being and resilience. Gratitude utilizes the anterior cingulate cortex, which guides how we tune into the world and focus our attention. It links into the medial prefrontal cortex, which is critical in our sense of social connectivity, relationships, and empathy. Gratitude also tunes into the hypothalamus, which regulates our body and dopamine.
Then she explains that gratitude is a simple practice for helping our brain and our body know we are connected to the bigger world. We can teach our attentional system to choose prosocial, positive, and good-feeling stimuli.
Dr. Kate suggests creating a 3 item gratitude list. Before bed, engage in CPR for the Amygdala and identify 3 different items we are grateful for, writing them in the journal. It can be something as small as a cup of coffee or some witty banter.
By writing it down, we are connecting our mind and our body through writing to create a tangible representation of what we’re grateful for. At the end of each week, we can review what we’ve been grateful for the previous days.
Mental rehearsal teaches our brain to pay attention to what we’re grateful for and seek out more like-minded stimuli.
