Hey man, I hear ya. It's brutal. I had a flat roofed commercial building, single story, four exterior walls, each about the same, not much trim. My quote to get a paint job was $10,000. Yikes. Who's got that kind of money?I had to do it myself. arrrg. $2000 in paint and a lot of work. Im 70 yrs old. Cra;p.
I have been at repainting my house two months now. Was bid 24k and 14k. Said how hard can this be and here I am 90% done. Nearly 3k spent on paint rollers brushes tape the list is endless. No airless. *sigh*
Las vegas is becoming the same way 100 thousand dollar homes are 500,000 now im a second generation painter and pick up a lot of my fathers work and i get people all the time telling me i remember when it cost 1500 to paint my house now that same house is 9500 the worst part here is people under cutting bids and turnip 5 gal of paint to 15 with water its crazy
Another huge problem is so many , and I mean a lot ALOT of people have started up a painting business without ever working a single day under an experienced painter , and are out their selling theirselves as a pro painter. With enough of these guys out there, they have screwed over so many people that no one wants to hire a pro now or want to even risk using another painter . Much less pay the price they are asking
To add to that I had a customer tell me a while back to paint the walls and ceilings the same color . Which for me makes the job a lot faster and easier but I asked him why he wanted it like that he said cause every painter he has used can’t leave straight lines and it looks terrible . Fast forward lets just say he gets his flat white ceilings with whatever wall color he wants on all the houses i do for him now
It's getting hard out here for A good painter I'm a paint contractor and yeah people think that paint doesn't cost anything and for a guy who cares about his work and does a A rated job gets under cut by guys who do D jobs I wanted to be able to have a crew of guys now my 3 rd yr as a contractor and 10 yrs exp. But I been having to calculate the job and take 1500 off just be paying the bills and find my self not working 1-2 weeks a month 😢
Mike the solution is incredibly simple, powerwash one day then come back and put new paint over old don't sand anything just leave it alone whatever stuff needs work paint spray over it quick one guy sprays one guy either backrolls or brushes to get good coverage from one good coat boom done. Use top of the line paint and that's as good as it gets for a cheap price. Don't hire slow workers. Also I would suggest offering other services like power washing driveways fixing cracks for extra charges. Also you should not include power washing the house as prep charge seperate. If they want you to clean the house $ or they can do it themselves. Also consider doing a job in stages so they can come up with money. 1k gets the sanding and scraping done, a month goes by 1k gets all the priming done next month paint the body the next paint the trim etc. Instead of all in one whack.

Yeah its amazing the cost of doing just a few rooms, $6500 is the Quote I have atm.

2015 every year $1 an hour and watch the prices go up now. jumps to $20 for fast food. Just off the hook.
