    This is so helpful thank you! I've been using your videos to work on my intro to touring. I actually picked up a sick slightly used FX3 from craigslist for around $600 and I've loved it so much! I was going to buy a Surly as soon as the bike shop got one (4 month waiting period) but I couldn't justify after falling in love with my FX. I'm totally going to add bar ends asap. thanks again for taking the time to make these videos! Cheers**

      I liked having a back rack and I changed the saddle to a brooks saddle but really depends on your use case honestly. I am also a big fan of Schwabe Marathon Plus tires. So many less puncture issues.

      Thank you I will look at tires and saddle as I am all about the comfort, mine is coming with a rear rack as it was more cost effective with that already on.
      Many thanks for taking the time to reply! 👍

    OK, I'll give you credit for a very helpful video. I was even surprised to find one! However, I have a 7.7FX, which also has the iso-zone grip, and the installation is not as easy as the FX3. On the 7.7, the white foam piece under the grip has to be cut off by approx 3/4" in order for the black metal adapter to be inserted far enough. After that, the handle bar grip needs to be moved approx 1.25" towards the center of the bar in order for the bar end to have enough handle bar available to be attached. This requires that the brake and speed shift mechanisms also need to be moved. Hopefully you are able to follow my explanation without a video. ;-) Thanks again!

    i had this problem once working for a bike shop. it led to an argument, i didn't want to let the customer have the bar ends over the isozone pad because i though it dangerous but the other guys just wanted to sell the bike. it got a bit heated and i got a reprimand from my manager for telling the customer "i don't care, you can't do this" or something to that effect. we didn't know there's a kit for the bar end. a decade later a video about it shows up in the recommended section. the more you know.

    Thanks for your video. I’m actually searching for a solution to the awful grips that came with my fx3. After a few years they have started disintegrating into a horrible, sticky, messy goo. It’s revolting!! What were Bontrager thinking or did they just not bother testing? The grips are sticky and this material transfers to my hands and accumulates into small rubber like balls which have gotten in my eyes and covered the screen of my smart phone in a layer of gunk. It’s just disgusting.
    Is it toxic?
    The handlebars have a weird end so not many accessories fit them, mirrors for example. Bike shops have suggested replacing my handlebars but I’d prefer to keep the cost down.
    I urgently need to replace the grips but I don’t have many options due to the weird shape of the ends of the handlebars.
    I absolutely don’t want to buy more Bontrager grips and reward them financially for their disgusting product!!
    Have other manufacturers offered solutions to these awful grips?

    Great video... I was thinking about getting the "Chim Chim" bar ends (By Paul Component Engineering). They are closed off on one side, so the handlebar wouldn't/couldn't actually protrude out of the other side. Would these bar end adapter work with this still you think? Very timely, will the handlebars still accept a mirror? Thanks.

    • @BradBeaird
      @BradBeaird  Před 4 lety

      Well I guess that depends on what kind of mirror you want. If you want the type that goes into the end of the Trek handlebars then it would not work. If you wanted to mount it in the end of the bar end (up toward the top), there is a removable plastic plug there. Otherwise you would have to choose a mirror that was more of the clamp style.

I also have the Profile Design Boxer Bar End but I never had to get the Bontrager adapter kit; I just used the plugs that came with the bar ends. Am I doing it right??

    • @BradBeaird
      @BradBeaird  Před 4 lety +1

      I suppose it kind of depends on your bars. When you took the old grips off and replaced them, some bars are slotted and only have a plastic piece in the end which isn't sturdy enough to adequately hold the bar ends. However, your bars may be different. If that bar end is clamped around metal, and the grips fit ok, then you should be fine.

      Hey Jason. I have the benefit of having both the Moloko's and the Jones bars. Of the two, I think I like the jones bars better. Part of that has to do with the sweep on the Jones being a little greater and the other is that I bought the Jones with a 2.5 rise and I like the position of that on my ECR. The Moloko bars have been better than stock bars on the Trek I think though.
