LYRICS
When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater 'neath the stars or 'neath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
But the Union makes us strong
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
Is there aught we hold in common with the greedy parasite
Who would lash us into serfdom and would crush us with his might?
Is there anything left to us but to organize and fight?
For the union makes us strong
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
All the world that's owned by idle drones is ours and ours alone
We have laid the wide foundations, built it skyward stone by stone
It is ours, not to toil in, but to master and to own
For the union makes us strong (yeah!)
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
They have taken untold millions that they never toiled to earn
But without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn
We can break their haughty power gain our freedom when we learn
That the Union makes us strong
Solidarity forever
Oh, solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
In our hands is placed a power greater than their hoarded gold
Greater than the might of armies magnified a thousand fold
We can bring to birth a new world from the ashes of the old
For the Union makes us strong
Oh, solidarity forever
Yeah, solidarity forever
Solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
Everybody!
Solidarity forever
Yeah, solidarity forever
Oh, solidarity forever
For the Union makes us strong
Yeah, man
(It's a saxophone song!)
It's a saxophone song
There has to be some local sax makers' union someplace, y'know
Solidarity with the sax makers, man
Ah, that was really fun, uhm
This, uh, this song isn't any fun at all
I mean, it's fun for me to play, I enjoy playing it
But it's a very hideous song about a couple who aren't
This will shock you to hear, a couple who aren't getting along very well
They once did and now they don't
And uhm, and rather than try to fix it, they're fixating on it
A simple three letters that would make a big difference in their lives
If they just chop the '-ate' of off 'fixate' and fix something
But they're not gonna do that, because I invented them, and I'm not going to allow them
I'm just going to torture them like a horrible person tearing the wings off of flies
This is called, "Soft Targets"

i recently learned my professor at my university went to high school with the john darnielle and was in his same poetry group. according to her, they still talk relatively often on facebook. on monday she and hundreds of other professors working at california state university campuses across the state will be striking with their union for better woking conditions and better pay. i'll be playing this on repeat from my portable speaker while i stand with her on the picket line. union strong!!
How’s it going?

note to self: union anthems FUCK with a sax accompaniment
Pete seeger is smiling down listening to this song
Does anybody have a recording of this from the First Ave Minneapolis live show a couple years back? It was one of the best experiences I have ever had at a concert and I would love to save it
I have this song uploaded with John's preamble about the song book this is from and unions if you want to hear him talk about that stuff.
Thanks, dude
🥰🤩 Thank you for your comment and archival due diligence❤
he sounds like the CIA left the room and he gotta sing fast before it comes back
He missed a verse:
"It is we who ploughed the prairies, built the cities where they trade
Dug the mines and built the workshops, endless miles of railroad laid
Now we stand outcast and staving 'midst the wonders we have made
But the Union makes us strong."
Still, awesome he recorded a version.
There are dozens and dozens of verses, most recordings use the same handful but there is no single standard original "right" set of verses for this song, he didn't miss it just decided not to include.
I was searching for this for ages after seeing it in the solidarity forever bunny girl video
Do you have a link to the bunny girl video?
link?
love this song!! it took me so long to realize it's to the tune of the Battle Hymn of the Republic
Which in turn is to the tune of John Brown's Body. Another banger
most wobblies songs are set to the tune of old hymns and religious songs cause they used the people's familiarity with the rhythms to help them remember the new lyrics for rallies and strikes
@@nicolastapia7016 well arent you annoying as hell.
@@nicolastapia7016 You can listen to the first chorus and sing the second time
I guess he could do the older U.S. version of the Internationale, and it would be solid.
I have absolutely loved it the first time I heard it. Thanks for finally uploading this , today is a good day
John Green’s favorite band.
He can try to hide it but we all know deep down his heart beats for the workers!
Capitalist dog
John Green is cool.
If he tries to hide it, I don't think the beat is all that strong.
since when has he tried to hide it?
hell yeah baby
An absolute classic, and words to take to heart.
I didn’t know the mountain goats were brothers

Hi Joel.
FINALLY a version of this that's a bop.
What the hell are you talking about, every version of this is a bop.
Weird Al and the Hound had a kid? I didn't even know they were an item.
I'm a Centrist who admires Thatcher and Reagan and I still can enjoy these sort of vibes.
LMAO
You realize these collectivists would round people up and execute them, right?
Dude. LMFAO.
If you admire Thatcher and Reagan then you sincerely do not have the capacity of heart or mind to “enjoy these sort of vibes”
